Roddick breaks record for fastest serve: 150 mph

Friday, February 6, 2004
(02-06) 16:17 PST UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) --

Andy Roddick set the record for fastest serve in a match by whipping one 150 mph Friday night in Davis Cup play.

It was Roddick's first serve of his match against Stefan Koubek of Austria. The American later matched the new mark in the eighth game of the match.

The U.S. Open champion broke the record of 149 mph that he shared with Greg Rusedski. Roddick hit a serve at that speed during a victory over Andre Agassi at the Queen's Club tournament in June. Rusedski set that standard in 1998.

Deboogle!.
02-07-2004, 12:49 AM
I don't know if they keep those records, Q.

Also, the stats could be screwed up because they have his average first serve at 192kph and average 2nd serve at 210kph and that's just obviously not right lol

It's probably something weird with the radar gun, and Andy didn't really register the fastest serve. But, shhhhhhh...it still goes in the record books. ;)

Deboogle!.
02-07-2004, 01:47 AM
well on the DC Site it says it was verified :D

J. Corwin
02-07-2004, 01:50 AM
well sure it's verified. But that doesn't mean the gun wasn't calibrated differently, etc. For example, I've read/heard that the gun at TMS Miami just won't register over 130ish, no matter how hard the ball had been hit...so yea.

I'm all for Andy breaking records though. :D

Deboogle!.

Here's a better article about it..... not quite what the first AP Article made it sound like:
---
Aces High
-- Greg Garber
ESPN.com

UNCASVILLE, Conn. -- How pumped up was Andy Roddick on Friday to play his Davis Cup match?

Well, he cranked his second serve of the match at 150 miles an hour. Unfortunately for Roddick, it was called out.

The 21-year-old American later authored a second 150 mile-an-hour offering into Austria's Stefan Koubek's body -- to finish the eighth and final game of the first set -- making it the fastest official serve ever recorded. Ever. The amazing thing? Koubek actually got his racket on the ball.

Nationalism, apparently, is a powerful force. And you thought The Terminator came from Austria?

"I opened up with a buck-fifty," Roddick said. "I thought, 'That's out of the ordinary, I guess.' I missed it, so that one goes out the door. After that, I thought it might happen, but at the end of the day the thing that matters is serving stats that say I didn't get broken.

"That's the one that I will take any day."

Almost as a footnote, Roddick won the match over Koubek, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. As a result, the United States took a 2-0 lead over Austria before a crowd of 5,143 at the Mohegan Sun.

As Roddick pointed out, his service game was flawless. He served 14 games and won them all. Koubek earned four break points but failed to convert a single one.

"I was confident that if I stayed the course and played my game that would win today," Roddick said. "But I felt like he was getting the better of me, more baseline rallies, than I would have liked.

"But my serve got me out of trouble. It was my wildcard today and that kind of was the difference, I think."

Roddick shared the previous record, 149 miles an hour, with Greg Rusedski. Last June, Roddick blistered that ace at Queen's Club in London. Rusedski did it at Indian Wells in 1998. Those serves were likely captured by the IDS radar system often employed by the ATP. The Davis Cup radar gun is manufactured by Wige Data, but according to ATP officials, the record is official.

Roddick led the ATP with 989 aces last year, 127 more than second-place mark Philippoussis. Against Koubek, he had 19.

Hi!!!! I'm baaaack!!!!!

HOLY BLEEPIN' SH*T DID YOU SEE THAT 150-MPH SERVE!!!!!!???????All hail Prince Andy the Great

OMG, it was so AWESOME to see it happen right before my eyes!! I can't believe I witnessed history in the making!!! I like to think that my "A-Rod: Serving Your Ass Up" sign (I changed it a bit at the last minute) encouraged him to nail that serve. but what's incredible is that he continued to serve so outrageously throughout the match! How does he do it???

And I posted this thought in GM, too, on bunk's thread. ;) ...

One of the ballboys actually got hit with one of Andy's 140-mph serves. He wasn't hit with the 150 one though. Not that it would've made the bruise any blacker or larger.

Andy breaking the record---it was awesome to see live. The audience knew exactly what Andy had done before even Andy realized it. The whole stadium got on its feet at once and went ape-shit with foot pounding, clapping, and screaming, it sounded like a plane was taking off. Andy looked over at the radar, saw the number and raised his arms up Rocky-style. He got a good loud standing ovation for that one.

He also hit another 150-mph serve the next day against Melzer. No standing ovation this time, but the audience went nuts again. Andy smiled and took a bow.

And he hit a 152-mph serve later on but it was netted; therefore, it doesn't count. He'll hit that number eventually, anyways. Although to be honest, I couldn't even see the balls flying by at 142 mph. I don't know how the players manage to even return such a serve.

And Mr Q, I agree with your assessment of Robby Ginepri. He still doesn't seem quite comfortable, either with himself or with his game. Of all the DC players there, he was the only one who didn't stop to sign autographs. He wasn't rude about it. He just seemed very shy and kind of insecure. Perhaps his success at DC will give him a boost in confidence.

.......

Oh, man, you guys I can't even begin to put into words my first live tennis experience! Could it have been any better?? It surpassed my expectations. I'm still trying to put it all together in my head and I took notes throughout the matches.

I will post my DC report on RO, though, as it is "exclusive" you know. ;)

You know, even the serves that registered 143 mph felt and sounded a lot faster than that. Who knows how fast it really was? But I noticed that none of the other players have the same loud "pop" sound when they serve as Andy does. Every time Andy served (with that loud "pop" reverberating), many in the audience would just gasp at the power of it. And many others in the front rows were actually ducking! LOL.

Roddick hits record serve in Voltchkov thrashing
Fri 24 September, 2004 20:56

By Gene Cherry

CHARLESTON, South Carolina, Sept 24 (Reuters) - U.S. number one Andy Roddick broke his own fastest serve record as he overwhelmed Belarus's Vladimir Voltchkov in the opening match of their Davis Cup semi-final on Friday.

The U.S. world number two won 6-1 6-4 6-4 in the first tie between the two countries.

The American closed the match with his 17th ace of the day, having moved to 40-0 with a 155mph (249kph) serve, two mph faster than the previous record he set at the Stella Artois championship in June.

The American lost only one point on serve in winning the first set. Voltchkov, playing with a sprained left wrist, made it closer in the next two sets but he could never handle Roddick's serve.

Voltchkov, playing with a sprained left wrist, made it closer in the next two sets but he could never handle Roddick's serve.

bla bla they said the same thing at queens, people are skeptical anytime he breaks a record. I just think when he hits 160 someday, he will be hitting 155ers all the time, people will still say the samething about the 160. To be truthful, I don't think these guns today were super accurate. They said Voltron hit a 153 mph serve...not possible :D

I thought everyone had seen this but this seems like a good place to post it if you haven't seen it.

How does a 6' 2", 190 lb. 22 year-old hit a 152-mph serve? It is obvious looking at Roddick that he does not pack extra muscle on his frame, so it is unlikely due to strength.

A frame-by-frame analysis of his serve shows that he can serve the ball at over 150-mph because of excellent flexibility, sequence and separation.

We have found that tennis players at our clinic in Tiburon can increase their service speed by 1-mph for each degree that they increase the maximum external rotation of their serving arm. While Roddick appears to have good (but not exceptional) maximal external rotation of his arm in relation to his trunk (90°), he increases his effective external rotation to 130° by arching his back. In order to do this, he needs exceptional flexibility in his ribs and spine. With his flexibility alone, Roddick can get his serve to 130 mph.

Where does the extra 22 mph come from?

In addition to his good flexibility, Roddick has excellent sequence. To understand sequence, think of a tennis player as a rocket, putting the racquet head in orbit around his body in order to smash the tennis ball. Like any rocket, a tennis player is built in stages. The biggest stage is the one on the ground, and the stages get smaller as you go up. Stage one is the legs, stage two the hips, stage three the trunk, stage four the arm and stage five the hand.

If a launch is to be successful, each stage must fire in sequence. If stages fire out of order, or some of them fire simultaneously, or they fire all together, then the launch will be unsuccessful. Unfortunately, there are many tennis players who do not have successful launch patterns, but Roddick is not one of them--at least on his serve. As you can see on the photos below, Roddick has his knees bent, with his hips and shoulders rotated away from the ball 90° at the beginning of his service sequence.

At impact, he has extended his legs, rotated his hips 90°, and rotated his shoulders 120°. His leg extension, hip rotation and shoulder rotation were all done in sequence, with each segment moved separately from the one above it. This sequence and separation is rare in tennis (players tend to move segments together, overlapping or out of sequence).

Finally, Roddick fires the last two stages in perfect order, with the maximum possible separation. In the photo on the left below, Roddick has extended his arm completely, but has not fired the forearm muscles to flex and pronate his wrist. This happens at the very last moment as he extends his racquet through the last 90° of its arc prior to impact in the photo on the right. A successful sequence equals a successful launch.

Another example that demonstrates Roddick's flexibility is his internal hip rotation, as shown in the photo below. Ninety degrees of internal hip rotation is usually only found in elite breastrokers.

One area where Roddick could benefit from additional flexibility is his on-court movement. In the photo below, you can see that he has only 105° in his stride angle, which is the maximum separation of the front and trailing leg.

We have found, when working with runners and tennis players, that for every degree you increase your stride angle, you increase your stride length (the amount of ground you cover with each stride) by two percent. This means that just a 25-degree increase in stride angle (which is easily achieved with Microfiber Reduction) would enable Roddick to cover 50% more ground with each stride on court. The photo below shows Michael Chang, a tennis player famous for his ability to cover the court.

They were saying yesterday that with NO knee bend Andy can still serve at 125.... that's kinda sick

OMG
that is really sick... :tape:

I'm sure a player like Gaudio, Sanchez, Rochus etc. would like to have such a serve with a knee bend in his game

Mal (so take it for what it's worth lol) said that he was watching Andy warm up before his match yesterday with James Blake (who was there watching) and that Andy's FIRST serve in warmup was around 125... like, without warming up really. His shoulder is just so flexible!

But according to the new theory in the DC forum, it's all b/c of doping :tape:

The Somax article says that Andy doen't have an extremely flexible shoulder but rather that his ribs and spine have extreme flexibility.

"While Roddick appears to have good (but not exceptional) maximal external rotation of his arm in relation to his trunk (90°), he increases his effective external rotation to 130° by arching his back. In order to do this, he needs exceptional flexibility in his ribs and spine. With his flexibility alone, Roddick can get his serve to 130 mph."

Retard Drysdale yelled "that's the best serve of all time!"
He has to stop embarrassing everyone!

The media acts like he needs that ferocious speed to win matches.
They ignore that he also lost matches with double faults & suffered pain a lot.
He fell down & got up slowly yesterday.
I hope Andy realizes it's not worth showing off 160 mph just because
idiots tell him it's great. :smash::bolt:

Roddick Does it Again
London, ENGLAND, 27 Sep 2004 - Andy Roddick broke the world service speed record for the third time in Davis Cup play this year, and the fourth time overall, with a serve of 155mph / 249.4kph during the first singles rubber against Vladimir Voltchkov in USA’s semifinal tie with Belarus. The delivery put Roddick 40-0 up at 5-4 in the third set, giving him three match points, and broke his own record of 153 mph / 246.2 kph set at Queen’s Club this year. In Davis Cup, he had broken the record first against Stefan Koubek (AUT) in the first round, and then against Jonas Bjorkman (SWE) in the quarterfinals.

This means that, for the third time in 2004, the ITF Tennis Development Fund is $1,000 better off. As part of their Speed Serve Competition, Getronics (the official ICT Sponsor of Davis Cup, and the Official Sponsor of Live Scoring and SMS) has agreed to donate $1,000 each time the world record is broken in 2004. They are also donating $1 for every ace served in the World Group in 2004, and with 459 aces served over the recent weekend, this brings the total to 1448 aces or $1448 this year, in addition to $3,000 donated for the three world records. Roddick is also on track to claim the state-of-the-art wireless mobility computer system from Getronics which will be given to the player with the fastest serve in Davis Cup play in 2004.

More on the radar gun used to measure service speed in Davis Cup can be found on the Davis Cup Speed Serve page.

Club level players have fast second serves. If you were allowed to volley the very back Elena would never win a service game. :)
