To think... the art and craft of Simon Larose on clay, and Canadian television isn't going to show it! ;)

Don't worry about Sluiter. He's going to keep that bench warm like nobody before or since!

is dancevic the young promising canadian or is that larose?

Wombi

It is Dancevic, he's 19 years old, I think

Stupid slip-up from Schalken in the second set, but he polished off the next two quite comfortably 6-2, 6-1. Important win that, since I'm not sure Verkerk is too reliable at the moment... considering how he struggled in the tie against India last year to beat someone ranked about 400, Larose could cause an upset here.

CooCooCachoo
02-06-2004, 02:56 PM
An important win indeed, but he won ugly. Although Richard Krajicek thought he played OK, I thought that Schalken didn't play very well. He's not too good on clay, obviously. Dancevic surprised me, hitting a lot of great passing shots! He was more fun to look at, but Sjeng was very solid (isn't he always ;)), so that was the key to the victory.

By the way, Sjeng made a huge mistake on quite an easy volley on set point in the second set. It could've been a straight sets win.. But this will be some sort of comfort to Martin, who is now leading 3 - 2 against Larose, with one break.

Really nerve-wrecking tie-break 9-9. Go Simon!

Sjengster
02-06-2004, 04:22 PM
11-9, Verkerk - if he hadn't double faulted on set point when serving for it at 5-4, this would have been a whole lot easier.

CooCooCachoo

Larose won the third set.. awful performance Verkerk!

Sjengster
02-06-2004, 05:01 PM
I ain't surprised. Schalken's game may well be as dull as hell, but he doesn't come up with the crass errors you can get from Verkerk. I still like both of 'em, mind.

CooCooCachoo
02-06-2004, 05:03 PM
True, Sjengster :) And I dislike both of them hehe. I am not a chauvinist, you see ;)

Both of them didn't play well (well Martin still isn't playing well..)..

Sjengster

Interesting that Europeans use the correct dictionary definition of chauvinism, which means being excessively patriotic rather than sexist which is the common usage nowadays... I'm from across the North Sea, BTW.

I hope I am nor excessively patriotic or sexist, Sjengster :) But I meant the patriotic definition ;)

Doubles today.. good luck Daniel!

I wish we just had a DC cheering thread for each quarter instead of it being split up into each tie during the quarter. It takes some of the steam out of cheering.

Anyway......... This doubles match is a barn burner.

7 all in the tiebreak

Who's injured?

WyveN

So Martin should be fine for tommorrow... if the tie still alive after 4 rubbers...

If Sjeng wins his match, Martin won't have to play anymore. Maybe Reamon will play instead of him.

Actually, unless it was copied out wrong, the draw has Sjeng in the 5th match. Thus, if Verkerk doesn't win, Sjeng certainly will have to play.

JuliC

There's a big chance that Sjeng won't play the last match, if Martin wins his match. So it's still possible that Reamon will play. And i think Martin will win.

I think Martin will win too. And they might as well play Sluiter if need be. I don't know if Canada will keep Larose in or not, but it doesn't really matter.

I think Dancevic can give Martin a match, though. He gave Sjeng one, afterall.

Yes but I think Verkerk is better on clay then Schalken

He is, yes. But I don't think that he's as reliable or consistent as Schalken.

Sjengster
02-08-2004, 12:40 AM
That's true, and while Verkerk has the big tournament result on clay, Schalken has the tournament win on clay. One thing in common, they've both beaten Moya on the dirt, and I believe Schalken's also beaten Mantilla on clay - so Larose shouldn't be too much of a problem, I hope...
