This Ukrainian kid seems to be pretty talented. Hasn't even turned 18 yet, started the year ranked in the 1400s and is now at #374.
He has won not less than five futures titles this year and loves playing on clay. Lives in Kiev, coached by his father who was a pro in the 80's, plays right-handed with a double-handed backhand.
Has anyone ever seen him play? I believe the other 1988s like Korolev, Del Potro and Cilic have some company here (without the same amount of hype surrounding him of course).
Started at age 3, "I was training with Andrei Medvedev and started to play tennis".
Hobbies: Play soccer and fish
Favourite player: Marcelo Rios, "I guess I just like him". :p

Finally !!! i find someone who knows him and apreciates his talent. I saw him play and i can say that i have never seen such a young player with so much talent. he isn't afraid to take risks on the court. he;s amaizing.!!! hope i will have the chance to see him again next year at the Romanian Open or maybe at some challengers/futures in Romania. i have some pix of him but how image shack is unavailable 4 the moment...i will post them later. oh yeah and..isn't his name OLEKSANDR?why did u write ALEX?
Welcome and thanks a lot for the pics and for the info. :D
Yeah, Alex is more of a nickname, until a couple of months ago his name was listed as Alex Dolgopolov Jr. in the ATPtennis site. I believe he decided to change it to his original name because he didn't want to be mistaken for Alex Bogomolov, Jr. (the American player). ;)

yes. maybe.altough the organizers of the Romanian Open put Oleksandr and Alexander  ( but they always make mistakes :retard: ). A friend of mine said that she heard his mother callin' him SASHA :p. don't u have more pix of him? i do but i will upload them when i'll have time:p. i have no idea why nobody likes him.everyone has to object something about him.I think he is a great player and a near-future no1 in the world. i mean..the leap from 1497 to 352 in not even a year is unbeliveble. If i am not mistaken...the BCR Open Romania was his 1-st ATP tournament in which he got into the 1-st round. Too bad he wasn't able to def. C. Rochus altought he had his chance  . Oh well...maybe next year cos' i am hopping for him to come as clay is his fav surface and this was his 1-st ATP tourney. Maybe he will play some futures here in Romania or some challegers. But i think that by next year he'll be too good 4 them.

Unfortunately he didn't have the ranking at the time entry lists for clay tournaments came out. He only has the ranking for Barcelona so far.
Hopefully he gets a WC for Casablanca because he played so well in the Moroccan tour.
At least he has the ranking for Roland Garros, his first ever!

So typical this result. In challengers he blows every one away, but once it gets to the ATP-level, he suddenly chokes against guys like Klizan, and Alves earlier. Don't know what that is, but it's bad and this way he won't make the big breakthrough. But he has got time on his side.

Ventura was actually a very good draw, one of the best 1st round he could have. Zverev wasn't too hard either. He should really win those matches on clay by now if he wants to go further. But good he deliverd this time. 35 points in the pocket and a decent chance against Benneteau who's been in bad form lately.

Pff, disappointing. Very good chance to qualify with this draw.
Indeed, let's hope he doesn't become a Lorenzi or Daniel.
Filo V.
04-25-2010, 01:57 PM
It's too early yet to make the determination of what Dolgo is as a player, but the past 6 months, he's had chances to qualify and has been in a few ATP events directly, and has struggled mightily. A lot of it is mental, since it is hard for challenger guys to actually feel like they deserve to be on the main tour, unless they prove they do, and Olek hasn't yet. He also is too patchy and inconsistent in general, which may be due to his age and lack of matches against quality opponents.
It will be time to worry around July if he is still struggling on the ATP tour, because he has a hell of a lot of points to defend from July forward. This is his opportunity now to really do damage, so lets hope he takes advantage of this situation, because this may be the only chance he gets for a while.
Filo V.

Pff, disappointing. Very good chance to qualify with this draw.
Indeed, let's hope he doesn't become a Lorenzi or Daniel.
Becoming another Lorenzi would mean he literally becomes a nobody who never sees the daylight of ATPs ever again after a fluke run. I don't think he's that bad, but he's starting to show himself as a Daniel or Vassallo type. He's still young, so now is the time to establish himself, and live up to the hype and potential.
Ad Wim
04-26-2010, 01:16 PM
Well said, and Lorenzi is pretty much a nobody, but he has become a top 100 player the same way Dolgo did, by winning challengers.
But as you said, he is still young and let's hope this is a learning process, but it would be very well if he gets some ATP-wins to gain confidence. And he still has three months before his first points will drop off, so he has some chances on ATP-level by that time I guess. Let's evaluate some more then.
Meanwhile, maybe it would have been a better idea to play Tunis this week, instead of Rome qualis. So maybe one or two challengers, to get some rhytm and wins, combined with smaller ATP-events which he can enter directly.

Very good points made. I think he should probably have played Tunis, and should play Bordeaux next week, but he probably believes he is above challengers, which he has shown he is, but not always having played tough ones like those. What he needs mostly is matches and confidence as you put, and he isn't getting them losing r1 and r2 in ATP events. At the same time, you only learn to beat the best by playing them. It's a tough process to get acclimated into the ATP level and really the talent difference is so great, he will figure it out eventually, but it may be too soon right now for him. We'll see how he does this week in Munich.

I like Ace drop-shot Ventura a hell of a lot, but Dolgo needs to win this match so ridiculously badly. Santi hasn't won a match since February. These are the types of matches Olek won in challenger events, so I don't see why he would lose this match. If he does, then there is clearly something not right with him.
Don't even want to think of his next opponent, got to take things one step at a time. Good luck Dolgo!

That was an unfortunate situation. Even with little experience with knowledge of fixing, I could tell pretty quick it was a fix. Why is he doing it? Probably because he's a scared and ignorant kid from a place where fixing is prevalent, because he has no money, and probably because he thinks this is the best way for him to make a living. If he would actually win matches on the ATP tour he could get money easier and more honestly, but I'm guessing he doesn't believe in himself either.
Really, Dolgo just has a lot of growing up and maturing to do, which is why I'll still support him, because I'm assuming he'll grow out of this and do better down the line. But he's CLEARLY let it be known he is not ready for the ATP tour right now.

So, Dolgo is scheduled to play in Madrid tomorrow for qualifying, we'll see if he is healthy or not, would be interesting if he recovers from his "serious" injury in about 3-4 days.
The qualifying list is weak so he should qualify, if he is healthy enough to play at 100% or close to it.

(4) DOLGOPOLOV JR., Oleksandr UKR v (WC) MENENDEZ-MACEIRAS, Adrian ESP
(WC) GOMEZ-HERRERA, Carlos ESP v (8) FISH, Mardy USA
Obviously he should win this section, but after what happened in Munich and his possible injury situation and obvious lack of confidence, I'm not certain he will make it through here. He must do so really, however, no excuses if he doesn't. Hopefully he gets the job done. Good luck to him.

Olek played really well today! Aggressive tennis. Served well and took it to Seppi. Made a few too many errors, though. He didn't get broken in the match and Seppi only had three opportunities. All in all, a good performance on the ATP level, which was much needed, and the fact it is at a Masters series should boost his confidence even more.
He plays Rafa next, so hopefully he can at least give a good account for himself in the biggest match of his career to date.

this draw is the best that could have happened :woohoo:
arnie in r1, out of form gonzo in r2, then mugro in r3
we could see a nice run from dolgo here

Not at all the best that could have happened imo. There were about 20 guys that were easier in the first round imo. And Gonzo doesn't have rhytm and might be injured, but if he shows up and plays mediocre even, he's very tough.

yeah, for the first round it wasn't the best draw
but he could have drawn more reliable seeds than gonzo & mugro for the later rounds obviously with gonzo losing a set today and mugro going 5 today
always fear he draws one of nadal, federer, söderling, djokovic
a lot better to draw gonzo these days
match just finished, comeback win for olek in 5 over clement
just watched the last 2 sets and olek looked like the deserved and comfortable winner there(only talking about these 2 sets and not the whole match of course)

Great and big win in his first GS-match so his first 5-setter. Very impressive, considering Clement was playing at home. Hope he gets a chance against Gonzo.

11 am on court 17 against gonzo tomorrow
expect gonzo not to like the smaller courts, while it should be easier to handle for dolgo mentally than to play on lenglen for example

Quite frankly, I think he's going to lose. With that said, I'm just ecstatic he got 2 wins in a GS, that will do wonders for his belief, and his ranking. He's growing up before our own eyes.
I'm disappointed Haase choked to Almagro when he was serving for the match, that would great for Dolgo and Steve and Robin, and I don't really like Almagro, but oh well.
