:woohoo: This is great news. Thanks I was just about to get tickets for Thursday and Saturday, but now I might take an earlier day too. ;)

BTW: what is your source? The tourney website (http://www.ba-ca-tennistrophy.at/en/spielerliste.html?mn=5&sm=5-0) does not mention it, but still has Monfils on the list. I just hope for my compatriots, that they did not confuse the two :haha:

Explanation number 2: if he continues the pattern winner/finalist- lose in round 1, some of them won't be too demanding;).

I'm beginning to wonder if Frenchies have pressure on them to play it since they must make it live etc..., it's the "newly" retreated Julien Boutter who's managing this relatively new tournament etc...etc...

I'm beginning to wonder if Frenchies have pressure on them to play it since they must make it live etc.....

That's probably one part of the story. On the other hand, players might also like to play their home tourneys with family and friends around, supportive crowds, where they know the language and the culture, and remember their dreams as kids, though I hope that Richie dreamt of other French tourneys than Metz;)

lucashg

He's not playing Bucharest anymore, but still hasn't pulled out of Palermo, so I think he'll be there, but it does look odd to play just one clay tournament after the USO. Oh well... apparently he'll be seeded #2 in Palermo.

Then Metz, Vienna, Madrid, Lyon and Paris? That sure is a lot. I hope he gets his ranking up to inside the TOP15. I think it's possible, but he has to be more consistent than playing well every two weeks. :o

Draw :

Singles (http://www.atptennis.com/1/posting/2006/341/mds.pdf)

We can see that Richard will find a qualifier in the first round, then Malisse or Clement in the 2nd round. 1/4 finals: JC Ferrero and Djokovic in semi-final. I think it's a good draw, i can go far in this tournament !!

I know you would like to see him in your country and hopefully you get to but if I were to guess I would say FINALLY playing well at home may be more important to Richie than playing in Austria, I just really hope Richie can win here in Metz and then hopefully he will play in Austria but unfortunatly he would most likley withdraw from Vienna because of Madrid coming up.

LUNDI 2 OCTOBRE (http://www.fft.fr/open-de-moselle2006/?id=2067)

MARDI 3 OCTOBRE (http://www.fft.fr/open-de-moselle2006/?id=2070)
richard's audio :

A review of the match by laura_richard from his official forum:

Basically, she says that he made a lot of UEs at the start but after around 10 minutes, he started to settle in and played some powerful and spectacular shots. :p

From the ATP website: :p

Frenchmen Richard Gasquet and Fabrice Santoro saved six consecutive match points to defeat the third-seeded Austrian team of Julian Knowle and Jurgen Melzer 3-6, 6-1, 11-9 (Match TB) in the Metz doubles final. The Frenchmen thrilled Metz fans after rallying from 1-8 and then 3-9 in the Match Tie-break, winning the last eight points of the match.

Playing together for the first time, Gasquet and Santoro became the fourth consecutive all-French team to win the Metz title. Santoro won the title last year with Michael Llodra. Santoro won his 21st career doubles title and his third in 2006 (Sydney, Halle). Gasquet won his first ever doubles title.

From the quarterfinals on, Gasquet and Santoro won three consecutive matches in Match Tie-breaks, including a win over top seeds Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski in the semifinals.

Gasquet said: "I will always remember this victory. At the beginning of the week I felt the pressure of playing next to such a great doubles player as Fabrice who has had a lot of success with other French players."

Santoro said: "It was a lot of fun to play with Richard this week and we played our best match today against the best team of the week. I must thank Richard for hanging in there the day of his singles loss because he was really tired with cramps and we played really late in the day."

Vienna report, 10 October 2006

When I looked at yesterday's OOP, I was rather disappointed and not sure whether to go to the tourney. But I had arranged to meet another Austrian fan (M.) from rogerfederer.com, so I went.

As I am not a patriot, I decided to skip the Austrian Koubek and go to the small court instead, mainly because of the atmosphere, it is a very small court and one is very close to the players. So I convinced M. to join me for Grosjean against Kubot (Polish qualifier). There was hardly anyone there and we chatted about Roger's merits as a man and a tennis player. ;) And then Richard came along with Eric and they sat down not too far away from us. I told M. about it. As it is well known on rogerfederer.com that I like Richard, she immediately said, we have to do something. I was reluctant, you can imagine, I was not willing to behave like a teenie asking for an autograph, but M. insisted. And then she asked the decisive question: Do you speak French and I said yes. I some how felt, if poor Richard is asked for autographs, at least someone should do it in decent French.:p

So we moved and placed ourselvers right behind him and his coach. There were two kids asking for a signature, but most people did not know who he was. M. was all respect: This man had beaten Roger once. She kept pushing me, but I did not even have a proper piece of paper where he could have signed. M. kindly offered her programme. Now, then: When the kids were leaving, I addressed him and said: please one for me too. The signature is unreadable. When he gave it back to me, I said: All the best for tomorrow's match. There was a slight smile and he said very politely "ah, merci." And that was it.

And then we watched the whole set, which Seb lost. It was not the best of tennis from both players. Richard talked a lot with Eric, but I could only catch little phrases without context.

After the first set, Richard left and I addressed Eric and asked for the time when Richard would be playing today as the OOP had not been out officially. He looked a bit embarrassed at first, but when he noticed that nothing more would come, he said twice: at 1 pm. So you know what I will be doing today.;)

Richard is taller than one would think, but his hanging shoulders still give him a boy's appearance. He has great eyes, every model would envy those long, dense eye-lashes. He bites his nails....M. called him innocence personified and she has a point there.

Few words from Andy :
In a mouth watering second round encounter, Roddick will face dangerous floater Richard Gasquet.

"I don't know if you could have hand picked a tougher second round draw in this tournament,Roddick said. He's a very, very good player, especially when he's healthy. The only reason he's not seeded is because he's coming back from an injury. He played well in the summer; we came close to playing in the quarterfinals of the US Open, but it didn't quite happen. But, I have a lot of respect for Richard's game."

Vienna Report 11 October 2006

Richard defeats Falla 7-6 6-3

First match on the small court at 1.00 pm, hardly anyone there to watch it. I would have installed myself next to Eric, but I was with a friend, and exactly next to Eric, only one place was left. It would have quite embarrassing to mingle in there, when the rest of the hall was almost empty. So we sat down a little bit further away, still able to see Eric, and directly opposite the players benches.;)

The first set was tough, Richie could not get a hold on Falla, a leftie, and Falla used Richard's pace to make him move around. Richie placed the balls just directly at Falla, there was not much creativity on court. But credit to Falla, he did very few unforced errors. They exchanged 2 breaks each, and when the tie-break finally came, I thought that Falla had the upper-hand. But an error here and there cost him the first set. Phew!

In the second, Richard liberated himself with some beauties of BH down the line. And this little elevation of his game was good enough to increase Falla's error rate. Richie went a break up, but lost it immediately, 3 all. He got annoyed, starting to shout, though I could not understand what. Eric forced him to "calme" and he obeyed to play his best game -the 7th-, when he broke Falla again on his own merit, he stepped up his serve to hold for 5-3 and closed out with a second break.

7-6 6-3 (BTW: Puschkin's exact match prediction in PTS;))

About his next opponent: I saw Roddick playing Acasuso, but apart from the serving, Roddick was not that convincing either and Acasuso was outright poor. Nevertheless, Richard will have to perform better than yesterday, in order to have a serious chance. I will be there today, but the match is on the big court and my ticket is rather high up.

What worries me, though, Richard seems to have a cold. He coughed, blew his nose in almost every change-over and fought heavily for his breath in long ralleys.

As for the doubles, Seb was the reason, but I could not find out why. I have the feeling, though, that Richard will be quite happy not to have to play doubles, either.

"I was a little bit more aggressive in the first set than I was in the second and third set," Gasquet said.

Vienna Report 12 October 2006
Richard loses to Roddick 7-6 1-6 3-6

Richard started the first set and there was no hiding, (but still some nose blowing during changeovers), no camping behind the baseline, even too close to it on Roddicks serve, I felt. A brilliant first set. Both did not allow any breakpoints, played aggressively and hit great winners, wonderful.

Then something strange happened. When Richard served at 0-1, second set, I must have missed the situation leading to breakpoint. I was totally flubbergasted when the umpire announced 2-0 Roddick. I have been watching tennis for a long time, I know how to score, I can't explain it. From there it went downhill for Richard, mainly on his serve and BH, while Roddick maintained his level. Richard did not really give in, but he did not fully believe in it either and so the unavoidable happened. :bigcry:

The crowd had been rather silent and was mainly in Roddick's camp, but when Richad made his exit, they gave him a deserved big applause, finally, interrupting the oncourt-interview with Roddick.

I was alone by that time. My friend (not the one from the two days before) had left and I carried my sad face around. After a while, I decided to install myself at the exit, where the cars for the players were waiting. There was a strange and very small group of semi-professional fotographers and tennis-afficionados there, waiting for whoever came out. As the waiting took so long and it was quite interesting to speak to those people, I wrote a small consolation message for Richard. But when he finally arrived he looked so sad and dejected, all the fire was gone from his eyes, that I just kept my position and watched him signing for the others. The message would have read:

Don't be sad, the first set was a dream, the future is yours.:yeah:

He's french after all, very talented, but prone to mental problems when he have to win the most important points. Also his fitness his doubtful after one mouth of rest. He should be worried if he has been working hard on it, but i'm sure it's not the case for several weeks...

Anyways if he reachs the semi here in Madrid and Paris, that will be a big improvement for him. But I don't think he's ready for that, and I don't think it's his ambition. I will make like Richard, watch him for the pleasure, while waiting better...

If Richard wins against Nieminen, then Djokovic, Ljubicic or Murray, Davydenko or Gonzalez, Roddick or Nadal, and Federer, then Richard will be the new Madrid champion

hahaha, and that's a big IF.

If he doesn't improve his ranking so that he's high enough to be seeded, he's going to have to get used to these bad draws. It'll be a good test for him to see what he has to do to get better, and if he manages go quite far in the tournament it'll be so much more satisfying than if he had an easy draw in my opinion. :) If he wants to be a top ten player, he's going to have to get used to beating these players on a regular basis. why not start now?! ;)

you've got a good point there. he has the talent to beat all of the top ten players, but executing it out is a different story. he also needs to work on his conditioning, and his little teenage mind needs some help on mental game too.

Richard won his first match 6-2 6-3 against Nieminen, with early break in each set. The match was short (about one hour), so Richard's fitness didn't pose problems to his game...

Unfortunately his next match against Djokovic is on the "pista Alcala", so no tv coverage. It's time for Richard to have better results with constancy, it will be more easy to follow him. :p

You can't justify better my ramark with your answer : if Richard's ranking was higher, there is more chance that is playing on center court, so no need to be in Madrid to watch his matchs :p

but five tourneys in a row are probably indeed a bit too much, in particular if there is no real moment of success in between. I wonder if this is a late consequence of his missed build-up for the season, due to the injury, just a thought...

I agree with what you said though. I think he'll end up having a career like Grosjean's. :o

And I also think his mindset is a problem. Margareta (Puschkin) visited Béziers a few weeks ago and noted how the people there are all very laidback and relaxed. Richard doesn't seem to have much ambition or the willingness to fight. :help:

With his talent Richard has the chance to be able to make the career he wants. The attitude he had in his last match against Hewitt or even against Clement, are encouraging signs of fighting spirit, a little less for his fitness, but at least he can work on that. But the constancy in the efforts seem to be a problem so far...

I don't. :p Optimism is back. But even if I believed it, I would never post things like that on his official forum. There, it should be encouragment only, not bashing him after defeats, about which he himself is probably more sad than anyone of us. MTF is different.

That is not only true for Béziers, it is the whole south of France, strangely enough many French tennis players do come from the south, though.

Generalisations are always difficult. My comment to Silverwhite just more into the direction that the south of France is a region where it is easy to enjoy life (even if you are not rich), the sun, the beach, the food, the rich culture, the variety of nature, the French savoir vivre, it is not like New York City (even if I don't know New York city :)). Maybe this is also a stupid comparison. I hope you get what I mean, I did not say that people there don't work hard.
