*Copyright alwayshingis - May 8th, 2004 -*

Predict-the-SCORE is a game in which you can predict the actual scores of
matches on the ATP tour.

Throughout, you will predict the scores to 18 matches of your choice. However,
the matches must be chosen in this breakdown:

1st Round: 8 matches
2nd Round: 7 matches
3rd Round: 5 matches
Quaterfinal: 3 matches
Semifinal: 2 matches
Final: 1 match

If a match becomes invalid (withdrawals or a retirement during the match) the
pick is not counted and you may reuse it any other time during the tournament.

As stated, you don't need to commit to play. :)

Speaking of TT, I've actually been thinking of tweaking the PTS format rather radically since last year's TMC. As those of you who've played the game since then know, the TMC format is a hybrid of the round robin, league table and knockout formats. ;)

My idea for tournaments other than the TMC and Hopman Cup is to keep the league table format for the rounds before the QF and then let the Top 8 players play a knockout tournament

Considerations:
1) Top 4 = seeds + randomly draw the other 4?
2) TB for league table round = ??
3) TB for knockout rounds = scores from previous league table/knockout rounds?
4) Pick 3 matches + 1 rep for QFs?
5) Predictions for knockout rounds sent through PM?)
6) Ranking points - Total 1st Round - QF scores to rank quarterfinalists? Total 1st Round - SF scores to rank semifinalists OR 3rd-4th placing match?

Rationale:
1. To make the game more exciting. I've noticed that some players like to drop out of tournaments after they do badly in the first few rounds because they lose interest. :p
2. To lower the weightage of the first few rounds. A lot of tournaments tend to be decided by the early round scores.
3. Rest in between tournaments.
4. Everyone will have to settle replacements in the first few rounds.
5. Slightly less work for the admins.

If everyone is agreeable, perhaps we could do a few trial runs (to be held concurrently with normal tournaments) after the US Open before deciding if we want to implement it next year.

Discuss. :p

Rationale:
2. To lower the weightage of the first few rounds.

That can be achieved easier by picking fewer matches in the early rounds and it also reduces the workload of the admins.

As for the proposed changes, I am not sure whether I grasp all the proposals in their entirety. A test run would be nice, therefore.

What worries me more is that 6-4 6-3 is statistically the best pick, heavily used by all of us. ;) I somehow feel, that a brave 7-6 7-6 or an occasional
6-0 should be more rewarded, but I don't have a proposal to make it work.

I think a new rule should be introduced about picking of scores. The player can only repeat the same score twice in every round. It will avoid players picking just a standard score for every match (6-3 6-4 etc).

I also think that perfect scores should be more awarded and predicting an upset as well.

That would only achieve 1 of the many rationales I listed. :p

I think it's actually up to a player's strategy, IMO. A lot of players pick 6-3 6-4 or 6-4 6-3 but in the end, it's which matches you pick that matters more, IMO. :p

7-6 7-6 picks aren't exactly very brave if it's a match between big servers. If you reward 6-0 picks, people will start using that score just for the sake of it. Also, it'll be based too much on luck.

We actually tried something like that. The top 3 people who picked the most perfect scores received some bonus points. In the end it didn't work out very well. :p

Having run this game for a few years, I honestly think the scoring system is pretty fair. You can choose to play safe or pick upsets/less traditional scores and earn or lose points based on your strategy. Live or die by the sword, so to speak. Like I said, in the end, I think the matches you pick are more important than the scorelines you choose. :)

Other than that, it's also very hard to put such rules into place. How many repeats would we allow per round and why? There would still be ways to get round the rules somehow or another (use of 6-3 6-4, then 6-4 6-3, then 6-3 6-3, then 6-4 6-4).

I also think that perfect scores should be more awarded and predicting an upset as well.

dude..
there will b more than 2 matches in 1 round finishing with 6-3 6-4 scoreline though

What I mean, if in round 1 we get to predict 8 matches, only two can be 6-3 6-4, the rest should be predicted with different scores such as 6-1 6-4, 6-2 6-3, 7-6 6-2 and so on.

The seemingly unstoppable SwissMister1 extends his lead at the top, and it seems likely, even at this early stage of the tournament that the others are competing for 2nd place.

Good 2nd rounds from Scottish duo adee-gee and shootingstar saw them move up the leaderboard, but still trailing in 5th and 6th place respectively.

Pre-tournament favourite silverwhite currently sits in a disappointing 11th spot, and seems to be too busy thinking about changing the PTS system to think through his matches properly.

Perhaps coincidently, the bottom of the table is packed with TT addicts, who need to start putting more effort into PTS, and less effort into packing posts with :ras: and :p smilies.

I'm someone who likes to use 6-3 6-4 but it's not a totally thoughtless strategy. There's actually a thought process which helps me decide when not to use that score. If you look at my predictions on WTAWorld, they are a lot more varied because the women's tour doesn't have as much depth.

maybe something like a mix between PAW and PTS.

Well imposing a limitation would make the game more interesting IMO. And how many matches actually finish 6-3 6-4? I still yet to see someone who predicted 8 matches 6-3 6-4 getting 5 or 6 right..

Imposing a limit would mean placing the 6-3 6-4 more carefully :p

silverwhite
08-24-2006, 10:14 AM
It would be more interesting because the game would be more dependent on luck. I'm not sure it's worth it though. :p

The way I see it, what you are suggesting is analogous to banning a certain style of play (say defensive play) on the real tour just because some people think it's boring. IMO, players should be free to choose the strategy they want to employ and whether they profit or lose out would be a consequence they would have to face. ;)

Also, I don't think we should introduce too many changes at one time. Let's try out the change in format first. I think we need a bit more time to sort out scoring-related discussions. :p

Discuss. :p

BUMP!

Anyone has any suggestions to add with regards to this before we do the trial run (after the USO)? :p

Second Draft Re: the Format Change :p

Idea:
League table format for rounds prior to QF + knockout tournament from QF onwards for the Top 8.

Trial Runs:
TBA, but definitely after the USO

Rationale:
1. To make the game more exciting and competitive.
2. To lower the weightage of the first few rounds. A lot of tournaments tend to be decided by the early round scores.
3. Rest in between tournaments for players.
4. Everyone will have to settle replacements in the first few rounds.
5. Slightly less work for the admins.

Details:
1. Knockout tournament: Top 4 seeds and then randomly draw the other 4
Alternative: Randomly draw all 8

2. Predictions for knockout rounds sent through PM.

3. TB for league table round:
# of perfect picks, then (if tied) # of zeroes (the one with less zeroes wins, of course  ), then (if still tied) average of common picks between players.
Alternatives: Scores from latest round, arrange individual prediction scores for each player in descending order and compare in the form of an ATP TB (eg. 32 vs 30: 32 > 30 so score is 1-0)

4. TB for knockout rounds: Scores from previous league table/knockout rounds (i.e. compare scores from previous round and if tied, go back one more round)

5. Ranking points:
Total 1st Round to QF scores to rank quarterfinalists
Total 1st Round to SF scores to rank semifinalists

Only problem is, isn't it a bit too similar to TT then?

I don't think so. The emphasis would still be on scores instead of just results. There would also be less ties. Like I said, we've actually done something like this for the TMC the past 2 years so we're not actually copying TT. :p

Scores updated...........

A quite stupendous effort from SwissMister1, including a perfect 3 set prediction of the Calleri-Massu match sees him regain his seemingly regular position at the top. Linus has 2nd place wrapped up, but will need an almighty performance in the final to topple the masterful SwissMister1.

The race for the bronze medal is interesting, with just 3 points seperating bitter rivals Bolar Bolabi, adee-gee, and silverwhite.

I don't think there's any doubt who won the US Open series.

Bring it on, WeeP! :armed:

I'm ready ;) I actually think Calleri might win but I took the sensible route and guaranteed myself a decent finish by predicting  to win.

Hmm, adee, there is a mistake in that league table..you counted virex points wrong...

I cant believe i'm still third in the race, these US hardcourt tournaments have been awful for me :o

Another top 4 position would be great! The last 3 weeks have been awesome for me and this was an amazing comeback considering where I was sitting round 2.

In the top 10 finally in the overall rankings. Nice

Congratulations to SwissMister1, who cruises to another victory with an exemplary performance in the final. Credit to Linus who pushed him hard this week, but once again he proved too strong and now goes into the US Open as hot favourite for the title.

silverwhite fought back well from a poor start to end up taking 3rd spot, sneaking in ahead of his old foe adee-gee and Bolar Bolabi, who had to settle for a tie for 4th spot.

In cases like this one, take it that he meant Baghdatis def whoever he played. ;)
