I think Romania has the potential to upset Switzerland... Federer has to make all 3 points, I think the double will decide that: if Switzerland wins they are through, if Romania wins Kratochvil will probably lose the last single against Hanescu and will make it 3-2 for Romania

WyveN
02-06-2004, 12:44 PM
Kratochvil has a chance against Hanescu doesn't he?

Billabong
02-06-2004, 12:46 PM
Kratochvil had the break in the third, but he lost it.. now it's Pavel leading 6-4, 6-3, 2-2...

Come on Michel!! GOOOOO FED!!!! GOOOO SWITZERLAND!!!

Michel up a break in the 3rd, would be nice for him to win this set, for confidence if for nothing else

Wombi

I don't understand why Kratochvil is playing today. Wawrinka is the much better player on clay.

I don't know exactly about the form of Wawrinka, but it would be huge experiment to let him play singles because he doesn't have any Davis Cup experience yet (or does he?)

I don't think Wawrinka has ever played a best of five set match, and virtually all his clay play has been at challenger level
Hardly expect him to beat Pavel infront of a hostel crowd

Wombi

Wawrinka has no Davis Cup experience, that's right, but he has shown great talent by winning three Challengers in a row on clay last year (and the Roland Garros Junior title).

Sjengster
02-06-2004, 04:26 PM
Indeed it will, and there's upset potential - Pavel has won their only clay match and on a slow surface I reckon he's got the kind of game that would be very tricky for Federer if they got into a dogfight. Federer just wasted 0-40 for the double break, I see.

Isn't there some historical curse where a player who becomes no. 1 has immediately lost their next singles match in Davis Cup? I know it happened to McEnroe and more recently to Hewitt when he lost to Escude in 2001... so Federer has broken the trend there! Mind you, I have a strange feeling Roddick is going to do the same tonight...

Hmm, I'd never noticed that before. I think Ferrero bucked the trend first though by trouncing Gaudio in his first DC match as number one last September. But he hasn't won a match in DC since of course: Calleri beat him up in the reverse singles, followed by those nightmare grass matches in the final against Hewitt and Flip.

Woo hoo SUI!!! I sure hope Rogi has enough left to beat Pavel and win for SUI once again!!!

HOPP, SCHWEIZ!!!

JUST WIN IT, SUI!!!

Neely
02-07-2004, 04:58 PM
well, I'm not completely happy about the result how the match ended because I am feeling strong sympathy for Romania (especially for Pavel) but it's over now and at least they put on a hard fight against Federer/Allegro.

Mrs. B
02-07-2004, 05:59 PM
nerve wrecking!

Roger & Yves could have closed that 5th set at 6-3. Yves is obviously the weaker link but Roger also made errors on the big points. At 4-2 he was on the net and both opponents were behind the baseline, the ball bounces in front of him and he pushes the ball softly, but it stays on his side of the net. i couldn't believe my eyes! i'm sure he felt so bad about that cuz it was a horrible shot. wasted point.
anyway, at 9-8 deuce, Yves finally returns a decent bh dtl for a 2nd mp, Trifu hits a ball to the net to give Switzerland a 2-1 lead.

Let's hope Roger & company get enough rest and are fit for tomorrow's matches.

Hopp, Schwiiz!

yeah...Rogi.

Actually I don't even know why it matters since it's almost a miracle for Rogi or the Swiss team at this moment will win Davis cup.

My guess is he loves the team atmosphere, plus his a good friend of Rosset's.
Looking at Swiss draw, it is farly good this year.
Provided they beat Romania they will play France in Switzerland (beat them in France last year).

After that it is most likely Czech Republic, which is not quite as daunting as Australia in Australia like they got in last years semi.

Action Jackson
02-08-2004, 12:43 PM
Pavel is a very good player returning from injury, he hasn't played much recently and the doubles match might have affected him more than Roger.

Roger loves playing for Switzerland, I mean it's a small country especially in the tennis world, so he feels he has to perform even better than he normally does.

It is unfortunate that Roger wasn't 4 yrs older. I mean when Rosset was going very well, he didn't have the back up he needed to go further in the tournament and then when the Hlasek crap. It has hurt the Swiss team, but they are in good spirits now.

lsy
02-08-2004, 12:45 PM
You're already writing off Spain? Even if it's Czech, I really don't think too much of Swiss chance really. Novak and Stepanek seems to make a pretty strong double team on top being both valuable as single too.

WyveN
02-08-2004, 12:48 PM
Novak is injured so anything can happen in that tie now.
From the Swiss perspective meeting Spain in the semis will be better then the Czech as they will get home advantage and a grass court ;)

that is way in the future though, Fed is looking rusty in the 3rd

Action Jackson
02-08-2004, 12:51 PM
Well Pav is not rubbish Wyver and maybe the fiery Romanians are getting into the match.

As much as I like Misha, I don't trust him in a live 5th match, though he beat Verkerk last year.

Let's see if the Swiss win this tie first before they can think of quarter finals.

WyveN
02-08-2004, 12:54 PM
After looking at their recrods I would go with wawrinka in the 5th rubber

Fed breaks back!

I realise Pavel is a good player, I am surprised at how easily Roger won the first 2 sets, probably because he recovered better from the marathon doubles.

The doubles isn't the major problem, it's actually as I said earlier it's the 2nd singles player that is more a problem, they don't have anyone else who is consistently win their singles matches besides Roger.

Yeah, I agree with you that the point lies more in the 2nd single, but it's not as easy as we are talking here...Maybe it's easier for them to make their double stronger NOW coz Roger is in for it, despite the fact that it might exhaust Roger

Hanescu and Wawrinka are playing the 5th match. Allez Stani get your DC career off to a good start.

Federer and Allegro are the best combination at the moment, since Rosset is not going to play DC anymore. They are best friends and they know each other very well, and the combination is the best for them. He is their top player so of course he is going to play doubles that is obvious.

No, I'm not suggesting the change of Allegro. In fact I'm not familiar with any other Swiss. I'm just saying that their double should get more improvement to be more competitive, no matter who stands beside Roger.

They can only do their best yanchr, and anyone who plays for their country and doesn't try in their matches, should never get picked again.

The singles is the main priority not the doubles, that is the best combination and sometimes they will win and other times not, that's how sport is.

George, you are Swiss, aren't you?

I know they are all trying their best... Anyway good luck to Roger and his beloved Swiss team. It's good feeling to be able to do sth for his own country and so is it for everyone else.
