C'est officiel, le russe Marat SAFIN, récent finaliste de l'Open d'Australie sera une des têtes d'affiche de l'Open13 2004.

:) good to know :)

I find it very foolish. He should play DC, take a week off and then ask a WC for Rotterdam and go to Dubai next. Much wiser IMO ;)

Can anyone tell me what it means?

Shadow

well, he is doubtfull for Davis Cup because he played too many matches, so when he doesnt play DC means 2 weeks until Marseille.

L'Open 13 can look like an easy win, but every year there are a bunch of new comers who are really good, so I guess he can beat them and get back into the wining routine.

loco_moskito will you be going??? I would go but I have school :( I love the open 13 it draws an elite field yet the tournament itself is such a relaxed friendly event, its a good chance for marat to enjoy himself and get some match practice...not that he needs it much ;)

Top duo head to Marseille (From BBC)

French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero and Australian Open finalist Marat Safin will be the biggest attractions at the Marseille Open this week after the withdrawal of world number one Roger Federer.

Federer, who holds the Wimbledon title and beat Safin to win the Australian Open last month, pulled out of the $600,000 event on Saturday, citing a foot injury and fatigue after losing to Briton Tim Henman in Rotterdam.

"I can't face playing five matches to win here and I don't want to come just to lose in the first or second round. I'd rather come back in my best shape next year," said the Swiss, who won the Marseille tournament last year.

In his absence, Safin will be hoping for his first tournament victory since returning from the long injury, which plagued his 2003 season.

The Russian, however, has a poor record at the indoor hardcourt tournament and has failed to win a set in his two previous appearances.

Ferrero, who confirmed his continued improvement on fast surfaces by reaching the last four in Melbourne, will try to do better than in 2002, when he reached the quarterfinals.

Two other former grand slam winners feature in the draw - Spain's 2002 French Open winner Albert Costa and former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic, who it seems is playing more for the fun of it than to claim back his former standing.

Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan, Chile's Fernando Gonzalez and rising Spanish prospect Rafael Nadal are among the other leading players.

and im also guessing Coria wont be that much of a problem for Marat since he's(coria) had virtually no match practice on hard this year and he has to make the transition from clay to hard court in a matter of hours, and he's also pretty likely to be jetlagged and tired :( bad decision on guilles part :( I hope im worng though.

from atptennis.com

Wild card and eighth seed Marat Safin defeated German qualifier Florian Mayer 6-3, 6-4 to win his first match (1-2) in Marseille. Safin twisted his right ankle when leading 4-2 in the second set (ATP trainer taped the ankle) but went on to win in 1 hour and 7 minutes. He served 14 aces without facing a single break point.

Safin: "I've been resting the last two weeks after Davis Cup, I did not play the last day there. I think the ankle is O.K. but I will now go and make sure with the trainer. He's quite a tough opponent. He's young and I had never seen him. I did not know how he played. He's got quite good tennis indoors and is very dangerous and he can be very good player in the future, so for a first round I am satisfied."

Seeded players tumble out of Marseille Open
By Eric Salliot

MARSEILLE, France (Reuters) - Eighth-seeded Russian Marat Safin joined Guillermo Coria and sixth-seed Albert Costa on the list of ranked players to be humbled at the Marseille Open on Thursday.

Safin was beaten 7-6 7-5 by Swede Jonas Bjorkman while Coria lost to the semi-retired Marc Rosset of Switzerland. Former French Open champion Costa also lost, going down 7-5 4-6 7-6 to Slovak Dominik Hrbaty.

"Jonas played a first class match," said Safin. "He had a little bit of luck with the net cord at times, but I can't complain about my game," added the Australian Open finalist.

Bjorkman was delighted after his third big win of the season, having beaten Andy Roddick in Doha and Mark Philippoussis in the Davis Cup.

"I lost my first four matches against Marat and won the last three. It took me time to understand his game," he said.

Bjorkman will meet now Rosset, who shone at one of his favourite tournaments when he upset second seed Coria 7-6 6-1.

The 33-year-old Swiss Davis Cup captain, who had to qualify for the $600,000 tournament, celebrated his 25th match victory at an event he won in 1993, 1994 and 2000.

The 1992 Olympic champion, now ranked 122nd in the world, took full advantage of the Argentine clay-court specialist's discomfort on the indoor hardcourt.

Shadow
02-27-2004, 11:09 AM
Safin: "I think he had one of his best matches today as far as I can remember. He hit all the letcords in the tiebreak and in the last game of the second set, he touched the net and it was 0-40 on my serve. He played very well today, I did not play bad but if the luck had been on my side, it would have been the same score but the other way."

Bjorkman: "I played very good, I served very well and really placed my volleys perfectly today. He always was under pressure which was good. I lost four times against him and now have beaten him three times, I have finally started to learn a little bit how to beat him. I think I got a good game, tactically I played it pretty good today. I mixed up the pace, changed the pace and position of my serve. if you let Marat control the points, he's very tough to beat."
