Linda sweetie  Only you could think up a thread title like this one :p Anyway - I agree with Sue - it is a yucky draw - and sad that I'm sure we Brits will have NO chance of TV coverage  But good luck to our boy anyway. Play well and win for our Isa who will be there to support you all the way :)

Rosie Cinci is on interactive coverage next week so we should see him play just hope he plays after 6pm our time because my boy tends to forget to record things.

Ali - are you sure it's interractive? I thought I read somewhere that they were doing some upgrading work on their interractive coverage and it wouldn't be in place until the US Open. I sure hope you're right and I'm wrong though! And I agree - 6.00pm is the BEST time for us - time to get home from work and prepare!

Eléa :wavey: Nice to see you again - hope you're doing fine.

And - yes - they do seem to have fun together - though some seemed not to like their "bad ass" behaviour  I think it's just two young guys who happen to be good mates havng fun - and good luck to them!

I imagine that's one of the reasons they're doing it now - just to get a bit of experience of playing together - though I'm assuming both David and Tommy would be the 1st choice singles' players  so they wouldn't be the expected doubles' pairing.

No way can they pick Ferrero after the way he has been playing recently - especially after that DC fiasco with him a few years ago. Must admit I had kind of forgotten Rafa :o

good win for David but what was wrong with Carlos.

Here's my match report Ferrer vs Moya:

Moya saves a BP in the 2nd game. In 3rd game 15-15 there is a 50 minute rain delay. When it is continued 2 BPs were saved by Ferrer. 4th game BP for Ferrer saved by 130 MPH serve from Moya but on the 2nd BP Ferrer converts. They both then hold their serves and Ferrer wins the 1st set 6-3. Ferrer has a BP in 1st game of the 2nd set that was saved by a 133 MPH serve. In the 3rd game Moya double faults 3 times in a row after leading 15-0 and then Ferrer breaks after another UE from Moya. In the 5th game Ferrer converts his 2nd BP chance. MPs for Ferrer in the 7th game on Moya's serve. 1st was saved by an ace, 2nd by a volley winner, and 3rd saved by another volley winner. On the 4th MP Moya commits a volley error. GSM Ferrer 6-3, 6-1 Match time: 1hr11mins

Why Moya lost: He hit 80% of his shots to Ferrer's forehand (which was on fire), his own forehand was very shaky (lots of FHs straight into the net), and he just didn't appear to care much, he showed a little self-disgust but he was never pumped up about the match. Mostly everyone left during the rain delay (and also, when play resumed there were Ferrero-Bjorkman, Spadea-Seppi, and Sanguinetti-Vik on the outside courts). But the crowd was pro Moya, I heard once or twice someone shout out David's name, the English pronounciation that even the announcers used.

*Ljubica*
08-15-2006, 03:56 PM
The nice guys at Sky showed this match on the highlights show this afternoon - and because Jim ran out of work and sent me home early, I got to watch it :) Looking at things from a slightly different viewpoint - I was extremely impressed with David :) I know Moya wasn't playing at his best -but David stayed focussed and calm - and his ground strokes were excellent. Also his serve was better than it can be sometimes  I don't agree that Moya wasn't bothered either - obviously I wasn't there live, but he often questioned calls and he was shouting out and talking to himself, which led me to believe that he WAS trying his best. Our commentators were saying he was just having "one of those days", and when things weren't going his way he became frustrated with himself. I noticed the stands were very empty - they often seem to be when non-Americans are playng in the States - it makes me

Anyway - well done David - you did what you had to do and did it well :) Good Luck for the rest of the tournament.

08-15-2006, 04:22 PM
Hi guys, thanks for both of your reports. I haven't seen anything of the match, only the scoreline. This sad girl was following the live-scoreboard. The truth to the match probably lies somewhere in the middle, but looking at the stats I was surprised by Davids first serve % which if I remember correctly was at a stunning 79%. Something that's quite rare for David.

Next up little boy Almagro, who's attitude I hate so you better put him back in place David.

VAMOS!!!!

Oh and hope you'll have a nice day at the tournament today Isa, with a little less rain than yesterday.

LaTenista
08-16-2006, 03:15 AM
The rain delay hit at just after 9 pm - so it was after 10 when play resumed - most people in the US have to be at work at 8 am in the morning and unless they are diehard fans (which is usually not the case) most people went home when it became apparent that the delay was not going to be a short one.

No rain delays today :) In fact the weather was absolutely perfect - 80s, sunny, and cool breeze.

Arthurs/Hanley def. Ferrer/Robredo 6-1, 6-2 (Ferrer held serve once all match, in the 2nd set).

I have sold my first plants this morning.:aparty:

I was wondering whether you were in the stadium. Was keeping an eye out just in case.

Could have been the umpire box too. All I know is that I was thinking, why the hell are you so p**** off? He did explain that not much later.:tape:

It was the goldy colour shirt Ali was talking about. I'm not a fan.

If David plays a night match on Grandstand I'll go.

I figure I can use the $30 I didn't spend last night on a day at the Louisville challenger in October.

You'll have to go Isa, you are our representative in Cinci.:)

Well yes and no. I don't think David would call anybody out on the court that even in Spanish. He did say hijo de p*** he's serving really fast.

I thought you might be at the tenniscentre tonight with Verdasco playing and Delic in the doubles but I guess $30 is quite a lot of money. Especially for a few hours.

I thought about going - but then I ended up leaving working at 6.45 (15 minutes late) so I would have missed the beginning of the match since I'd have to park far away, walk to the ticket office, buy a ticket, and then trek to my seat.

I saw Verdasco-Roddick on TTC, then they showed part of Tommywommy.

I just saw the schedule for tomorrow - night matches are  too bad I can't have the day off and see David play singles and doubles.

I was at the match. He started out like shit and never recovered. Davydenko put on a clinic. We moved down to the front row behind the baseline for the 2nd set and he was being pushed around but made a "mini" run and got one of the breaks back ... too little, too late. Juanqui and Amalgro were at the match. When we got back to the hotel, the boys were back. David had changed into his bar hopping clothes and was outside talking to some Carmel Electra look-a-likes and smoking a cigarette. Juanqui was wearing denim capris and flip flops. Too funny.

The Roddick match was great, though, and he won over a lot of people at this very pro-Roddick tourney. Last night was really disappointing.

If any of my shirtless practice pics came out halfway decent, I'll post them after I get back home. Is he playing New Haven next week?

Saw David eating in the players restaurant yesterday, then took some pics with kids. He didn't practice, hope that knee(?) is okay.

Saw David practice Saturday and today [at least twice each day] and hit so hard with Moya this afternoon that I think he may have caused Moya some problems. When we were leaving the venue about half an hour later, David was out running with Javier. I have really high hopes for him this tournament....he can't be in better shape.

And I can only agree...what is the meaning to play if he is not 100% fit? Would be much better to rest now for 1 or 2 weeks and be completely healthy for the US Open than to risk and miss the GS....But thatīs his decision, he is already a big boy ;) Well, or maybe not anyway...

He took the strapping off? As far as I know it's only there to lift the kneecap a little as to take off some of the strain, but it's not necessary. So I guess it bothered him more playing with it than without, which is a good sign. :)

I'm still alive and still a David fan. I haven't been around in the last months due to the passing of both my grandmothers and a friend at work, as well as helping my bf Jon paint and clean his new house. Been missing you ladies.

Anyhow, Jon & I went to the tennis yesterday and saw all of David's match less the last 3 points (it had started to rain and play was suspended, but it was short and play resumed before we could get back to the court). I saw Javi about 30 seconds after walking through the main gate, he was exiting it. David had his left knew taped and a bandage on the outside of the same knee but he tore them off early on and never looked back. I'm glad to report he was playing well and never in danger of losing the match. He still has his temper, throwing his racquet around and complaining when one of his serves was called out, then corrected as in and he had to replay it. Apparently we were sitting in David's section as I heard a lot of "Vamos David" around me. Jon got sunburnt so I don't think we're going back tonight.

Secondly, how on earth did you manage to get such good close ups? How do you keep your hands still and prevent your knees from buckling in when taking pics of him if you're that close? I would faint with that much hotness so close to me! ;)

Well, I sometimes ask that myself (being able to take that good close ups with that georgeous guy being so close), but somehow I always manage ;) To be honest I can tell you that I was very nervous during that autograph session and I was also shaking a bit, but still the pictures turned out good (at least most of them), maybe it was thanks to my camera

I know JCF and his gf were in the stands, and so was David's coach and gf (I loved the dress she wore). But there was another lady and with 2 kids(does anyone know they are-just curious?!)

But I think he'll be ranked 5 next week. That's amazing! He's getting better with age.:)

It was his coach, wife and kids :) I went to Applebees the night before his match and saw his coach there with his family. I glanced around and saw them and I was thinking "Why does this guy look so familiar...oh! It's David's coach! His kids are cute!"

About ten minutes after they left, Javi came back in because he'd left his cell phone at the booth

I took a video to see their reactions when David won the first set, I can't tell who looks more bored, Juan Carlos or Javi's daughter

thanks for the video. Javi's son is really cute. I didn't realize he'd have such young kids...(he doesn't look particularly young??!) And him forgetting his cell is funny. Both wags are so pretty...I guess I'm a lil bias towards David and would give the edge to his girl. I hope u had a good time at the event.

I just knew someone on this forum would produce the family/friends box pictures. :worship:

Thank you very much Declinerer. How did you hold your nerve at Applebees? I would have had the urge to go up and say hello or something. :)

When David won the second? set, Juan Carlos didn't have any reaction. He just sat there with his shades on. At least David's girlfriend applauded.

I think it was mostly because I didn't realize who it was until they were just getting ready to leave--I thought about waving, but I was a bit shy. Actually, my friend and I were more concerned about the fact that were we jokingly making fun of Andy Roddick (they were airing his match on TV) only to find out the Bryan brothers were sitting right behind us and probably heard everything we said

And Juan Carlos is a horrible cheerleader, I saw both of David's matches and I think he clapped maybe once in both matches combined :o

Who knew Applebees of all places was a hang-out for tennis stars to come?! :)Lucky you got to dine in the same room with those people.

When you were watching David's match against Simon, did you hear or see David get ansy/frustrated? I saw all your pics on ur flicker account, they're awesome. Thanks for taking so many pics of all the players.

Declinerer,

How exciting that you met Javi! I'd love to go to a tennis event someday and meet some of my favorite players. I wonder why Juanqui was so quiet? I know he and Ferru are best friends.

I am so excited that David is Number Five in the rankings! Two Spaniards in the top five! Wow, and two of my favorite players, too!

You're welcome :D

David was yelling quite a few obscenities in Spanish--a lot of "joders" "putas" and "coņos" plus some other phrases that my Spanish isn't good enough to understand. I don't think he smashed his racquet--maybe once, but I think it was only when he got to his chair. He was really annoyed with himself though and , even thought a lot of the crowd was really pulling for him  It was so tense to watch the last game, his girlfriend looked so nervous.

On a sidenote, it was funny during Feli and Juan Carlos' match, Fernando just finished his match on Center Court and they were doing the interview and Grandstand is attached to Center, so you can hear everything, and while Fer was doing his post-match interview, Feli was about to serve and he yelled "Cierra la boca! Dejar de hablar, joder!" telling him to shut up

I technically didn't meet him--just saw him at dinner, but he was a foot away from me when he walked past my booth! I wish David had been there, but maybe he took Marta out for a nice dinner at a fancier restaurant :inlove: Juan Carlos is a boring cheerleader, but maybe he took David out for drinks that night

Maybe Juan Carlos didn't want to make David nervous with too much yelling. I know I'd get nervous if someone in the stands yelled too much.

I heard Fernando Verdasco spat on court following his loss to Rafa. I don't particularly like Verdasco and I like him even less now.

Somehow, the Spanish word "joder" doesn't sound as crass as its English equivalent. (Oh, my! I now know swear words in Spanish! Tennis is corrupting my mind! LOL!)

i didn't realize some of these guys have potty mouths! and there are children watching and looking up to them!! (sorry to be so parent-minded, but cursing-even if you're a hot guy- isn't admirable) Rafa and Roger NEVER cuss. *I just there is no bad blood btwn Feli and Fer...they're such great partners.

I agree. I have never heard Rafa curse. He sometimes gets a little angry with himself, and makes an "oh, oh" face, but that's it. I think Roger got mad enough to curse once, during the U.S. Open final with Del Potro.

Fernando Verdasco spit on court after losing to Rafa, very unsportsmanlike behavior. Feli dropped the "J-bomb" on one occasion, too.

I wonder if Juan Carlos has ever talked to Ferru about his cursing on court? Juanqui seems like a quiet sort and I have never heard him curse, at least not during a match in a major tournament.

Ferru has a bye in the first round and will probably play Wawrinka in the 2nd round, not that easy, but I am sure Ferru can win :worship:

I just hope Ferru has come over the Olympics loss and is motivated to play on hardcourt!

Yeah I really hope he has, because from what I've seen of the draw... He's going to find Nishikori on his path again...

Did anyone see what he had posted on Twitter? "Ya en Cincinnati tratandome de la espalda"... I don't know if it's because my Spanish is too limited, but for me, that means "getting my back treated", and that would mean he had an injury?
not that I would be surprised, I said before that the way he served during the Olympics made me fear he might be injured, but the strange thing is, he never mentioned it)

OMG... I hope to God this is just a warming up round, because those serve stats are a disaster... Don't want to spoil it for you by giving you figures but it's not good, not good at all.

Actually it reminds me of Guille Coria when he had his shoulder injury and couldn't serve (Coria was far worse, though, so let's hope David's not heading that way).

I should not have started following that livescore before going to bed. Now I have to stay up :(

That match was a DI-SAS-TER. Couldn't serve, couldn't return, nothing was working at all.

I'm afraid my fears were justified. He is either very tired, or injured.
I would tend to think rather the latter. I could only see the end of the match, but I saw him wince a couple of times. That, plus the little Twitter comment... And the fact that his serve was so inaccurate, and he seemed to move with difficulty as well...

I'm really worried now. There's obviously something wrong, now if he's injured, I wish he would say so, at least we would know for sure.
I can understand why he would have wanted to keep it a secret until now, but now that he has played possibly the worst match in his career, I don't think there's much left that's worth hiding.

And all that in front of Marta who had come to see him, poor David

I couldnīt believe my eyes this morning when I saw the result and how bad Ferru had lost

I somehow I was fearing the match against Wawrinka and had not the best feeling about it, but I didnīt expect such a bad result :(

Sophitia, I also read that twitter message of Ferru and the same as you, I was also worried about it. But I donīt think he had a surgery, but to me it sounded as if something is not 100% good and because of that he gets treatments like massages and things like that.

I didnīt see the match last night, but from what you told (especially the bad serve procentage) it really sounds that he is not healty. I really, really hope itīs nothing serious and if he really is injured, I donīt understand either why he doesnīt talk about it.

Oh yes, unfortunately I also remember the Guille Coria service disaster. I also was a big fan of him during that time and it made me so sad. He made unbelievable many doubles faults and I sometimes couldnīt continue watching :(
Really hope itīs not that serious in Ferrus case and I hope his serve will be back to normal when he is 100% fit again. Though I have to say that his serve was already bad during the Olympics. I remember in the matches I saw there (2 doubles and one singles) that his first serve procentage was very low also :(

Get well soon, Ferru  :yeah:

I didn't get to see the match. They weren't televising it. I knew staan would be a tough opponent but didn't think he'd lose with that kinda score. And I had no idea there was a possibility he was injured. Whatever it is I hope he gets fixed. Rafa is already out and it would be worse if david couldn't compete fully at the us open. I guess he has some time now to get rest.

Yeah, same here, I don't think he had surgery. But I do think there is something wrong. I'm no doctor but having pain in your back would certainly impact your serve percentage...
He still didn't mention anything on his Twitter, though. I need to look for interviews, maybe, and see if he mentioned anything.
I don't know what would be worse actually... If there is an injury, I hope to God it's not serious and won't keep him off courts for long.
If there isn't, then, I don't understand what the hell is going on with poor David...

I think being a Coria fan was one of the most painful experiences ever! The RG final... and then the slow decline with this double-faulting nonsense... The worst about it was that he could play beautifully, and then his ability to serve would just vanish, and double-fault, double-fault, double-fault... Horrendous!
Ferru's serve definitely isn't that bad, thank God!

Though I have to say that his serve was already bad during the Olympics. I remember in the matches I saw there (2 doubles and one singles) that his first serve procentage was very low also :(

Exactly. That's what I just wrote on the Wawrinka def. Ferrer post, actually... I think it dates back to the beginning of the Olympics. Even in his first two matches that he won easily, his serve stats were bad. Against Nishikori, they were also bad. In the doubles, it showed less, but they were bad, too.
He never had a powerful serve, but at least, he is usually very reliable and consistent with it. 54% of 1st serves, for him, is a dreadful record.
What's even worse this time, is that he also failed to score return points. Extremely unusual for Ferru who's arguably the best returner on tour... And generally he seems very dispirited on court. As if there wasn't much he could do... Another very unusual behaviour.

But anyway, I have other theories about a possible injury, but since he doesn't say anything, that means either that he's not injured, or that he doesn't want to talk about it. So I'd better refrain from launching crazy rumours, I guess.

It's only speculation. Apart from this little message on Twitter, which puzzled a couple of people, he never mentioned anything about an injury. I could very well be completely wrong about this.

I saw the end of the match by subscribing to the official website's livestream. Money well spent, since Ferru is already out, lol!
Works very well, though!

You're right, since he's out of Cincinnati early, he will have time to rest, and that's a good thing.
