Well, I'm sure if Germany's able to get a draw, France will be able to do so as well. And then our teams will kick the others... butts... in the final round. :)

Well, France lost. Which is deserved, considering they needed around 40 minutes to "enter" the match......when you play World Champions, it's lethal. The score isn't bad though. From what the 1st half has been, it could've been far far far worse.....

I'm also looking forward to Germany vs France. Hope they've had the lesson. May the best win. :)

Germany Beat Poland 29-24 to Win Handball World Cup

The German national team beat Poland in the handball World Cup final in front of a home crowd in Cologne on Sunday, putting an end to the 17-day tournament that turned a marginal sport to a national obsession.
Heiner Brand's team made the "winter fairy tale" come true Sunday night, beating Poland 29-24 to win the handball World Cup title in front of home crowd in Cologne.

"What we've experience here is beyond understanding, but I'm proud of it," said Brand, who can add a goal medal as coach to the one he won as a player in 1978. "It was simply extraordinary and sensational. Other than a few super optimists, no one expected this result."

Henning Fritz and his later replacement Johannes Bitter were sensational in goal and Torsten Jansen led the way with eight goals to send the 19,000-strong Cologne crowd and effectively the whole country into a frenzy.

Fritz, who suffered a calf injury in the 35th minute, said he also couldn't believe what he and his teammates achieved.

"The last 20 minutes seemed like a year," he said. "It was absolutely horrible, but not I can't tell you how happy I am."

Germany's previous handball titles were at the inaugural event 1938 and in 1978. Poland were playing their first major final, but weren't able to repeat their performance of being the only team to beat Germany in the tournament's opening rounds.

The hosts turned a 3-2 deficit after six minutes into an 8-3 lead in the 11th with six unanswered goals as Fritz made super-saves against Polish back-court sharp-shooters Karol Bielecki and Grzegorz Tkaczyk and his teammates were deadly accurate up front.

Germany led 17-13 at the half but then allowed Poland back into the game, the Poles outscoring the Germans 7-1 as they fought from 21-14 down to 22-21.

But two strikes from Pascal Hens for 24-21 and a double from Jansen for 26-22 settled the affair against the finally tiring Poles.

"Three weeks ago I didn't think it was possible to win this title with all the problems we were having," said Brand. "It will take a while to sink in just what we have achieved."

The win means the German team is automatically qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Denmark takes third from France

Earlier Sunday, Denmark defeated France 34-27 to take third place, their second best showing ever at the event, the top result being runner-up in 1967. Denmark's Lars Christiansen had a match-leading nine goals, Michael Giugiu had six for France.

Pre-tournament favorites Croatia -- the 2003 world and 2004 Olympic champions -- and defending champions Spain had to settle for fifth and seventh, respectively, losing quarter-finals to France and Germany, respectively.

Yeah, we didn't play well, but every team had at least one loss, even the champions Germany, but they lost in the group stage! We had 7/7 in Group stages... and then lost... That French goalkeeper was great, 3 saves more than our GKs, and that was what decide+bad attack for both teams...

Thanks :) This success was totally unexpected because in Poland are three very popular sports: football, volleyball and speedway but not handball! Before this event, Polish TV didn't show any matches of Polish handball team!
Yes, they had got a warm welcome like volleyballers two months earlier when they also cameback with the silver medal

So I think you can watch a lot of handball from now on on Polish tv, right? ;) What a good achievement for this sport in your country.

The final match between Germany and Poland was seen by more than 16 million people here on tv, that's the hugest number of viewers which this sport has ever reached.

The handball world cup brought back some of the enthusiasm we had during the soccer world cup and hopefully it will last.

I don't know; I hope the biggest Polish sports channel who showed the whole World Cup will be showing matches from German league because in your country are playing the best Polish hadballers :)
I was shocked in the quarter-final: Poland - Russia. That match in Hamburg was crowded (12 500 spectators) although in the same time Germany were playing against Spain in Köln. People in Hamburg prefered watching the match "live" than the match of Germany in tv - this is amazing and another good example how popular & valued is this sport in Germany :)

I didn't knew that so many people were there. It's good to see that the audience supported the other teams as well.

By the way, do you know the German player Jo(achim) Deckarm, who won the World Cup together with Heiner Brand in 1978? He got hurt during a match in the Euroleague and was in coma a few weeks. He is handicaped since then, but you can see him from time to time on tv where they report about his life.
He was on the German tv show "Stern TV" yesterday together with Heiner Brand and Henning Fritz, the German goalkeeper. Very great performance :)

By the way, because the German players are invited to the popular sportsshow "Das Aktuelle Sportstudio" some of the matches in the Bundesliga at the weekend are starting earlier. The handball mania continues.

The final was clear for Germany, but the semifinal was lucky for them. But France also had World Cup in handball at home and won it, so some time they take it, sometime they have to take it. This time it was Germany who had home advantage.

Poland and Germany were teams with trouble and injured players or who nobody would have counted so high be in the final.
