Um? It's not as if they specifically didn't take the best team

Juan Carlos - injured
Carlos Moya - injured
Alex Corretja - Puhlease. Washed up, and trying to get his ranking back into double digits, if he hasn't managed to do so already. He told them he wouldn't be available to play this year, for that reason.
Albert Costa - Refused to play unless he was promised a singles spot. If this was on clay? He'd have been a no brainer. It's not.

I find it hard to see how Spain is going to pull this one out, unless they get a wicked weekend out of Robredo or Nadal.

Sjengster
02-03-2004, 12:28 AM
Well if it's Robredo and Lopez that makes things interesting, because they've got winning records over their first opponents, Stepanek and Novak respectively; however, the Czechs can easily outclass the Spanish in the doubles and then going by the head to heads the reverse singles would play right into their hands.

Scotso
02-03-2004, 01:37 AM
Nadal/Robredo seem to be a competent team.

0-14? You mean in the first round or what? It would seem to mean they've played more than 14 times on a surface other than clay.

You'd think that the Czech's would take the doubles, but you never know what the Spaniards will come up with that day. Davis Cup is known to produce some weird results, afterall ;) That, and Nadal/Robredo have beaten three very good doubles teams in the past month.

Sjengster

No doubting the Spanish team can play, and there won't be the embarrassing miscommunication we saw with Corretja and Lopez in last year's final, but the Czechs are probably third behind the Aussies and the French in the doubles game, they've got a great history and it's being played on indoor carpet. But as you say, there can be some weird results... doubles is quite often the best rubber of the tie, it seems to me.

Who is even playing doubles for the Czech's? Is Suk a playing captain?

I assume Novak and Stepanek will be playing. They play with each other a lot in normal tournaments and are a good doubles team, especially Novak is a great doubles player. But it could also be Novak and Damm, i dont think they'd put a doubles specialist like Damm in the team without using him for doubles.

In all ties in world group since the early 80s... 1st round, QF, SF and final... Spain never won a tie on any surface other than clay!

ferrero is still injuried, since second round of australian open, carlos moya is injuried since the final of sidney, corretja and costa refused to go,but i believe that the spanish team is a good team, feliciano, nadal, tommy robredo and beto martin are 4 good players, feli has a good service and nadal can win to any oponent, tomy and beto are typical spanish players of clay...

Novak will win at least one of his singles, and I think Stepanek should win one of his singles, though he has lost the only 2 DC matches he has played, both in 5 sets.

It will be very difficult for Spain, and I think the Czechs will win this tie.

i read nadal and robredo play the single matches and the double one. I do not understand, why putting all the pressure on the shoulders of only two men, what about Lopez???

CooCooCachoo
02-06-2004, 08:11 AM
Well, Lopez wouldn't be a smart move. He's not really the best player out there, is he? I think the Spanish coach should've selected two other players for the doubles match (which Robredo/Nadal are likely to lose against Novak and Stepanek), so that they can focus on winning three or four singles matches, which is very well possible.

Go Tommy!

They didn't really have any choice but to play him. Well, they had the choice not to play him, but it wouldn't have been very wise.

I would imagine that the hope was for Robredo to beat Stepanek, and if Nadal could beat Jiri, well... that'd be icing on the cake. Frankly, I'm not dissapointed, because I didnt' expect him to beat Jiri here anyways. I do think he'd have a chance against Stepanek, if they get that far.

Czech Rep won 6-4 7-6 6-3 :(

I dont think Spain have any chance now, I dont see one of them beating Novak in singles tomorrow.
Me neither. But this isn't a big surprise. Had they gone with a winning team and lost, it'd be dissapointing. They went with their B team, and faced some very tough opposition. They made do with what they had, but it doesn't look like it will be enough. If nothing else, at least the younger guys got some DC experience out of it.

*trying to look on the bright side*

Mind you, even with Ferrero and Moya playing I think the Czechs might still have been favoured just for the presence of Novak - he'd have won the doubles and been favoured for both singles matches given his two wins against them last year, one on carpet and one on clay, no less. Still, as he said himself he can't celebrate yet and I hope he finishes the job tomorrow whoever he plays. No disrespect to the Spanish, but I want a Czech-Dutch QF with my two favourite nobodies playing each other!

I think that with Moya and Ferrero, Spain would have edged them out. But you're right... it was going to be a close tie, even if Spain had their best team. Thank goodness Robredo got that one point. 5-0 would have been embarassing ;)

I don't even see why this is worth discussing?

Novak was quite obviously injured, or he would be playing. Period. He wanted this tie as much as anybody.

He likely woke up and his leg was tight or something. And if he wasn't going to be able to finish a match, they might as well play somebody who can.

That, and the tie isn't even over. There is no guarentee that Nadal is going to beat Radek.

Anyone else's "serve" link on the scoreboard not working?
yes, it's not working also... but I don't care for these stats... I got the impression sometimes, that the whole serve stats provided by Getronics are fucked up...

especially when I was looking at the serve stats from the Roddick/Koubek match. I was really doubting if Roddick's 1st serve speed was accurate. But they confirmed it later.
The strange thing was that Koubek also had a 1st serve at 223 kph and I'm not sure if he can do that.

Real powerhitters like Safin or Philippoussis have been far away to record a serve around 220 kph at the Aussi Open (check the webpage and their serve stats) and now Koubek, all of a sudden, comes up with a serve at 223 kph... I can't help, that sounds strange to me

I bet you are one these people say when one of your faves is injured, but plays anyway, then he get his arse kicked and then you complain that he didn't play well and use the he was injured as an excuse for their loss? You are, aren't you?
