I'll post my pictures of him in here. ;)

Yeah, I agree. And yes, he's extremely impressive. The Clement loss was only from being tired I'm sure... 5 matches in 4 days in this heat would be horrible.

I just hope he doesn't fuck up again. Does he seem like a nice kid? He looks 12  thanks for the pics:)

He seems nice, I saw him talking to some people about the heat and he was nice to some little kids.

I don't think it was his wrist. I was in the front row and it looks like he might have bent his thumb awkwardly or something.

Ryan straight setting Gimelstob is a great start for his first ATP match ever. I would have loved for him to beat Clement, but that's not an easy win with a bum wrist.

Keep up the good work Ryan! :D

I think people might think he's scary because he's so extremely focused while he's playing. He always has the same serious look. But after the match is over his demeanor changes and he smiles and talks to people.

Well he's travelling with a Florida coach so I think he's going back.

I wish he wouldn't, though... he has a lot of potential and while school wouldn't negate a decent career, I think he could improve more playing on the pro tour. I agree with you, school can wait, but most people can't play tennis professionally at 40. ;)

noooo, I just think that Baghdatis is still a very up and down player that is vulnerable early.

Querrey is clearly the better player, but I don't think he'll beat Soderling.

So Ryan drew Guillermo Coria in the first round. Not the best possible draw. Still, while he's a seed I feel like he's very beatable and Ryan has the game to send him home.

Go Ryan! :D

Coria isn't a seed anymore, Scott.

I just came across this article:
BRICKER: Not just hot air - Sweeting's good
Gator will face Coria in 1st Slam.
Published August 26, 2006

NEW YORK · Ryan Sweeting blew air through his closed lips, a sort of non-verbal way of saying, "Better believe it."

The question: Is Harold Solomon working you hard over there at the Lauderdale Tennis Club? The answer: Air blown through lips ... followed by a couple of reinforcing remarks.

Like, "They're killing me," and "I go home and just fall into bed."

It's mid-afternoon Friday at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, four days before Sweeting, 19, plays his first U.S. Open (indeed, his first Grand Slam) main draw match, and we're taking a very long walk back from practice court P-16, which only seems as if it's halfway to New Haven.

It has been almost one year since Sweeting, unseeded and unknown, rocketed through six consecutive matches to win the U.S. Open juniors, giving him, if you'll excuse the silly comparison, the second-longest Open winning streak behind Roger Federer's 14.

The scrawny kid from the Rio Vista neighborhood just south of downtown Fort Lauderdale still is 6 feet 4 but has added 15 pounds, and though Solomon and his coaching bud, Andy Brandi, might be killing him with long, demanding workouts, the kid is secretly loving it.

"I had no idea a year ago what it would take to win on the tour," Sweeting said. "I just thought it would happen for me. Now I know, and I'm committed."

In fact, he knows enough that he's contemplating dropping out of the University of Florida and turning professional. Don't read too much into that because, obviously, he's also contemplating going back to Gatorville. The point is he's progressed to a point where it's an open question.

A year ago, he was much too immature physically to hit the road with the men who play tennis for a living, so off he went to Gainesville. Today, he's no Rafael Nadal. But you can see how much more solid he looks, especially above the belt.

And the physicality is showing up in his results. He is 13-5 this year in Futures events (the deep bush leagues), 1-2 in Challengers (a cut below the regular tour) and 1-2 in ATP matches with a win over Justin Gimelstob at Washington D.C.

That's hardly enough for an American Express gold card, but it is enough to start looking at him as a serious prospect. Besides, he's got something you can't teach -- size. And at 6-4 and about 175 pounds, he's not lacking for punch in his shots.

It's up to Solomon and Brandi now to massage his brain into a tennis weapon. Top 100? Probably. Top 50? We'll see.

This has not been an altogether smooth year for Sweeting, who was booted off the Florida team after being stopped on campus for speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol and being illegally in possession of the attention deficit disorder drug Adderall.

He worked an advantageous deal with the State Attorney's office and has been extremely contrite since the bad publicity scorched his name.

"I think I've shown that I can come back after being knocked down," Sweeting said. And he has.

He's drawn Guillermo Coria in the first round, and that's a good opponent for him. Coria, who once came within a whisker of winning the French Open, has fallen to No. 42 after a succession of injuries.

Friday, he had double practice sessions with his new coach, former Chilean Davis Cup captain Horacio de la Pena, but you couldn't tell whether his ailing shoulder was ready to stand up to a Grand Slam.

Coria has gone out in the first round of six of his past seven tournaments and twice retired with shoulder injuries. Still, this match will only add to Sweeting's education.

Unlike Coria, Sweeting is in excellent fitness, and that will be an advantage in this opening match. They might be killing him over at the Lauderdale Tennis Club, but he looks very much alive for the first Grand Slam of his life.http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/sfl-bricker26aug26,0,6514564.column

I should have done that... but I can tell you that he has a big game. A big serve, huge groundstrokes. He hits the ball as hard as anyone I've seen.

He also isn't afraid to come to net, and while he's not an all-star volleyer, he's competent at the net.

MatejBockoFan I was wondering if you could please describe his strokes as much as possible. Does he have an abbreviated serve? Does he move his right foot on his serve? Does he hit a forehand and backhand like Safin? What kind of grip does he have on his forehand and backhand? Does he have a loop on his forehand? Are his strokes ugly? Please just describe them as much as possible. Thanks.

It's been reported that Ryan will be traveling with the Davis Cup Team USA to be their hitting/practice partner when they go to Moscow at the end of the month.

Here's more news from Charles Bricker of the Sun-Sentinel:

Heat's On Ryan to Turn Pro

NEW YORK -- "Well, duh."

That was Rodney Harmon, director of men's tennis, reducing the most important question about Ryan Sweeting to two words.

The question: Does he turn pro or go back to the University of Florida after he gets home to Fort Lauderdale after serving as practice partner to the U.S. Davis Cup team in Russia, Sept. 22-24.

There is a succession of knowledgeable tennis people who think it's time, including his personal coaches, Harold Solomon and Andy Brandi. "He's got all the tools -- physically and mentally," Solly said Tuesday morning by phone from Lauderdale. "He still needs to get physically stronger, but he's ready."

Of course he's ready. Discount the five-game win over Guillermo Coria in the first round here, where Coria said "no mas" after pulling a hamstring and hitting five double faults in his first three service games (his shoulder wasn't exactly in the best of fitness, either).

But taking a two sets to one lead over Olivier Rochus in the second round before going down with cramps 6-0 in the fifth says he can compete at a high level on the ATP tour.

Ryan has either shut off his cell phone permanently or buried it in the bottom of his bag, because I can't get a return call from him. So I phoned Solly to see what he knows. Nothing. Same as when he left for New York. He hasn't made a decision, Harold said.

My gut feeling is he's leaning toward going back to Gainesville. When he came in for his post-match interview after Coria he was wearing a Gator baseball cap and his face lit up as he talked about (a) having an apartment for the first time and (b) "a serious girl friend." Ryan gives you a sense that school is a sort of safe haven for him, where he doesn't have to get beaten down by the big boys on the tour.

So. . .school or pro tour? I hope he waits until he gets back from Russia to decide because a week hanging out with Andy Roddick, James Blake, the Bryan brothers, captain Patrick McEnroe and coach Dean Goldfine is going to help him get a much more solid feel for what awaits him if he turns pro, and I think all these people can kick his ego up a notch and infuse him with a higher sense of excitement about professional tennis.

And remember, Solomon (Rice), Blake (Harvard), McEnroe (Stanford), Goldfine (Texas A&M) and the Bryans (Stanford) all went to college before turning pro. They know the value of college and the value of professional tennis. They can relate easily to Sweeting's situation.

Scotso

I'm fairly certain after his results this summer that he'll go pro.

SHB
09-07-2006, 10:27 PM
MBF, judging by your description and his appearance, he sounds somewhat similar to James Blake. I know you hate James, but objectively speaking, would you say that they have similar skill sets?

Scotso
09-08-2006, 12:02 AM
Well, Ryan has a two-handed backhand, so that's a major difference. I mean, I wouldn't say that, no. Ryan constructed a lot of points, he doesn't just go for winners which seems to be James' game. Ryan also goes to the net quite a bit.

I could see Ryan being very successful on clay while Blake is not. Ryan is also much smaller and uses racquet speed and not brute force to power his shots. I don't see that they're that similar.

IMG signs Ryan Sweeting for representation
November 21, 2006

Ryan Sweeting, the 19-year-old rising American tennis star who won the U.S. Open Juniors in 2005, has signed for exclusive worldwide representation with IMG.

Sweeting, ranked 372 on the ATP Tour, advanced to the second round in his first U.S. Open as a professional this summer, playing a tight five-set match before being defeated by the 36th-ranked player in the world. In May, 2006, he won a Futures event in Vero Beach, Florida.

“Ryan’s turning professional has been one of the most anticipated developments in American tennis,” commented Tony Godsick, IMG Senior Vice President of Tennis, and a member of the IMG team that signed Sweeting. “He knows he carries a lot of hopes for the future of American tennis, but he’s prepared with a great game and emotional maturity to take on the challenges.”

“It’s flattering to be pursued by the big agencies,” Sweeting said. “My family and I decided on IMG because their team and expertise are in keeping with our goals. They realize that tennis is the top priority and will make sure I can concentrate fully on my sport.”

The 6 foot 3 right-handed player was born July 14, 1987, in Nassau, Bahamas. He lives in Fort Lauderdale, and attended the University of Florida this year before deciding to devote full time to tennis.

“We’re working with Ryan on a schedule for next year that can embed him in the ATP Tour while developing his game,” added Eisenbud.

ryan does have a lot of talent, but physically needs to do better. He is quite skinny, and not very strong. Ryan is finally making some breakthrough. He started 2009 by reaching Noumea CH semis (def. Guez, Lisnard Roger-Vasellin and lost to Mayer) and then he played AO qualies, where he reached R3 (def Schukin, Ouanna and lost a close 3-setter to Ouahab). After that, Ryan went to USA and he has reached Dallas CH final, where he gonna play another in-form american Brendan Evans tommorow.

I agree. There is no glaring weakness in his game that I can see. His forehand, backhand, and serve are all quality, and few have his combination of power and mobility. I think he's somewhat reminiscent of Blake, except he has a two-handed backhand and plays with a little more caution. From what people have said about him, it seems that his biggest weakness has been a lack of poise. He didn't show that at all this week, but then again he was playing at such a high level that there wasn't much to lose one's temper over.

BTW, he's now won two of his last six Challengers, and didn't drop a set in either. It's a shame that he won't have a chance to play in San Jose. I think he should get a wild card in Memphis, ahead of Isner, Levine, Odesnik, Delic, Young, and the others.

I remember when he came out of nowhere to win the USO Juniors and TTC happened to play it and I was really impressed at all the shots he had. I saw him play a year or two ago at Indian Wells and he was abysmal. Hopefully he can find some consistency and get into the ATP events. Seems like his form is pretty good so maybe he will get a WC. Delic got a lot of attention with his run at the AO so he might get it, but generally they tend to favor the younger players for the WC, don't they?

Yeah, generally they like young up-and-comers and high profile guys (like Baghdatis, who got a WC this week). Delic did get a lot of press at the AO, but Sweeting's momentum may earn him a wild card. Odesnik won the Carson Challenger, so he should be considerd as well, but if it's one or the other, I would give it to Sweeting since he's two years younger.

It's always unfortunate when WCs have to be given to guys who would have received direct entry. Not that I disagree with it, but it frustrates me that they didn't enter the damn tournament to begin with.

If the qualy WCs haven't been decided, hopefully he'll get one of those. He can play with these guys if he maintains this level of play. There's no doubt about it.

Well, against Nadal, this was my first chance to ever see Ryan play, and I have to say, for someone soo tall, his serve is a serious liability!! His 1st serve speed was around 95 mph, nothing like starting a point being defensive. Seems like he has good areas to his game, and with his height, he really should work work work that serve, make it stronger!! I am suprised he is near the top 100 right now, but just think if he could get some free points off the serve, sooo much better for him & his game.

I wonder if he'll change his upcoming schedule now that he's moved up the rankings. He's the 4th seed in the Tallahassee challenger this week, which is on hard. Then two weeks later he's scheduled to play in the Sarasota clay challenger and I'm assuming the Savannah one the week after that. His win today moves him up to the point where he's not going to gain much by playing challengers.

I feared this moment would come. He has the near impossible task of defending 250 points from his title at Houston last year. He'll fall as low as #145 if he loses in Round 1. Hopefully, he makes a deep run.

Filo V.

Ryan has had a better season this year, his game has improved, he gave a good account of himself in the match vs Ferrer at the Australian Open and he's done well overall at winning the matches he should win. But the match with Ferrer, Benneteau in San Jose R1, Isner R2 at Delray Beach, Stepanek in Memphis R2, Sela in Dallas R1, all tell the same theme. He can play with good players but at the end of day, he cannot beat these players when it matters and win the big points. That right now is his biggest issue and is holding him back from reaching his potential.

Unfortunately although he's having a better season overall, his awful 2011 after Houston has caught up with him. He'll now have to restart his career in challengers and ATP qualifying and work his way up again. Early last season he got lucky with some draws and had a confidence factor that allowed him to really overachieve and attain some great results, but reality has hit like a rock for Ryan the past twelve months. Pressure will be on him in Houston, so we'll see how he responds.

Ryan plays Russell in R1 of Tallahassee. Unfortunate, since both could definitely use the wins, but that's tennis. Mike has a 3-1 H2H over Ryan, but all four have been very close, so Ryan will know he has chances to win here. GL to him and hopefully if he wins this match, he can go far in the event!

Good wins for Ryan today, especially over Mikey. Now vs Ram, should be very competitive. H2H is 1-1 and the last match they played was at this event in 2010 at the exact same stage in the event, which Ram won 7-6(6). Hopefully Ryan can take the victory on Thursday.

Filo V.
04-06-2012, 03:02 AM
Ryan lost 7-6(3) 1-6 4-6 and is out of the top 100. He struggled on serve the final two sets whereas Ram played a lot better. Supposedly conditions were pretty rough as there was a storm coming, and Rajeev handled them better. Not a surprise, unfortunately. Disappointing, but Ryan really isn't a top 100 player right now. Hopefully he can start to rebuild his career in challengers.

His next tournament is Houston next week. The entry list is much stronger than last year, but hopefully the positive feelings gained from 2011 will translate over to this seasons' event.

I don't really follow him as closely as I do other players, but he had some tough draws earlier in the year. He pretty much missed the whole summer hardcourt season (injury I think). Sacramento is his first tournament back.

After he wasn't able to defend his Houston PTS I know his ranking dropped alot because of it, doesn't mean he's as poor as his rank, or was Houston just a fluke?
