Jurgen lost today in Kitzbuhel after playing great all week. He can feel proud he reached the quater finals. This is the best he has ever done in Kitzbuhel.

Tomorrow Jurgen will play doubles with Julian Knowle, his good friend. Hope they are able to win. They are playing agiansst another Austrian Stefan Koubek and his Greman partner Kohlschreiber. I like them all, but Jurgen is my number one favorite so want Jurgen and Julian to win this time.

I don't know. Understand that Massu may have wanted to come to the states for the hard court season. He was very tired and serving poorly. That is only a guess.

Jurgen plays in Sopot next week. Then he is taking two weeks vacation. Yipes just before the USO? I don't understand but it means he will not be in Toronto or Cincy this summer.

Good lluck to Jurgen and Julian in the doubles today against Stefen and Philipp. Glad the rain has stopped over there.

There are some nice pictures of all the Austrians on the Kitz site.

I'm just wondering if this guy reminds anyone of Jurgen? His name is David, he's from the Aussie big brother series this year, and he's a gorgeous farmer (think Brokeback Mountain!). You might have had to see the show / more of him, to see the similarity I can see. Maybe it's just the pretty hair, but aside from David having a wide mouth, and Jurgen having a tiny one.... I think they look a little alike. Just need to find a better photo!!

From those photos I do not see a similarity. Yes, find a better one. Maybe you miss Jurgen so much you just want to see him in David.

By the way I saw Brokeback Mountian and was not thrilled with it. The blips they showed to get us to watch led me to believe it would be different. My son thought it was not worth seeing. The country side was great and the acting good. Just did not enjoy the subject matter.

Jurgen lost a tough match today in Sopot to Monaco who is playing very well now. It was a three setter. Jurgen had the lead in the third set and let it gat away. Frustration for his fans and more so for him.

In the doubles Jurgen and Jullian won an extremely hard fought match against two Polish players. If Oliver Marach and Kubot win their doubles they will play J & J in the quarter finals. Oliver is still int the singles as he beat Waske today.

They play the third match on court 1 tomorrow against Kubot/Marach. It will be a great win for which ever team comes out on top. They both very good teams. I want J & J to win.

Melzer d Robredo 6-2 7-5
In this Davis-Cup like match, Melzer was playing out of his mind. He advanced forward alot, and Robredo's forehand, his mightiest strength, just wasn't clicking. The Spaniard led 5-3 in the second set and had set-points, but Melzer stunned me by coming back for the win. I don't quite know if Robredo tried his hardest, seeing as the North American Masters are on soon. Also, I haven't decided wether I'm happy about this result - Robredo is a big player, of course, but Melzer brings the local crowd to life, he's quite a star around here, and seeing as Marach lost surprisingly to Eitzinger (who lost to Calleri), he is the last local man standing alongside Koubek, who plays Lapentti next. Exciting stuff.

Melzer d Pavel 7-5 6-3
I already stated my love to Pavel's game, but Melzer was playing out of his mind again. Hitting -shot winners off first service returns, blasting some amazing backhands down the line and especielly firing on all cylinders on his serve, which is huge. Nothing much to say - Melzer was just great, and Pavel is not strong enough to deal with him on clay when he's playing like that. The local hero is starting to look like he has a real shot at the title - he's so strong mentally this week!

Youzhny d Melzer 6-3 3-6 6-3
This was the match of the day, with the crowd coming to life yet again thanks to Melzer, whom I grew to like. The local boy wasn't at his best at all - he was still flashy, still hit some huge backhands down the line, followed plenty of shots to the net (and you know how much I love net-rushers!) and tried some ridiculous -shots off returns of serve, but it just wasn't clicking. He served really well in the second set, but couldn't find his serve at the right moments of the third set and didn't take his chances on the Youzhny service games.

Youzhny played a great match. This was the first time I watched him this week. He is really a player who is metamorphosic - I remember his imitation of the Becker serve back in 2002 and his strange Borg like backhand. He is much more elegant now, can rally superbly and is just generally a great player, but I just can't get to like him. I also can't understand why he's not having a great year - he looks really good. He has no weakness as far as the groundstrokes are concerned, he's quite fast and has a good serve. I hope he'll keep this up, I might not like him too much, but he deserves to do well.

Koubek/Kohlschreiber d Melzer/Knowle 6-4 7-5
Well, I already declared my love for Philip, who was today on court with three different left-handed Austrians. I discovered that Knowle hits two-fisted shots from both sides, also on volleys. He thinks he's Frew Macmillan. I don't get what is so good about Melzer/Knowle, I think they're only ranked so high because they play together alot. Knowle is really not an impressive player, Melzer is the leading force of the duo by every aspect and Knowle missed so many easy shots, doesn't have an impressive serve nor really good volleys.

Melzer was quite good today, but the most amazing player on court was Stefan Koubek. I don't know how many of you remember his great runs at the starts of both 2002 and 2003, when he made the Aussie Open quarters and won the Doha title. He is a very impressive player - quite short and small, but hits the ball very hard and is fast as a tiger. He played some really great tennis, chasing down smashes and hitting some unbelivable reflex volleys. I'll be all for him and Philip in the final, which they'll play against...

I want to stand up for Julian and say he is just coming back from a very bad injury and that may be part of the reason for his poor play. When I have seen Jurgen and Julian play they have both played very well. Julian usually has a good serve, not great, but okay and his net play is normally great. I do believe Jurgen is better at the net, but I have seen Julian make many spectacular shots at net. They are good friends and do try to play together often, but that is not the only reason they are ranked so high. I hope she gets to see them play at their best sometime.

Jurgen really is a good doubles player. I think he enjoys being on the court when the pressure is on two guys and not just him. :D

I think the guy might need to learn to pull his finger out and play competently:speakles: Maybe even consistently.

Jonas has had a back injury for a little while now. Not sure how they managed to win (the doubles title) last week.

Fingers crossed for Jurgen. Let's see how difficult it is for him to win two in a row.

Not to hard for him today as Verdasco had to ret. The score was Jurgen 6-4, 4-1 Ret. Next Jurgen plays Soderling. This will be tough but Jurgen appears to be playing well enough to win.

Good luck Jurgen. You can win this one. I would love to see him in the semi-finals.

Today Jurgen and Julian ran into a better team. Erlic and Ram defeated the 4-6, 3-6.

In the singles Jurgen did not do well losing to Soderling 3-6, 2-6. I expected a lot closer score. Hope Jurgen can do well at the USO.

The Melzer-rumour: Seems like I made some heads turn around with the previous post about a possible relationship between Nastya and ATP player Jürgen Melzer, a rumour spread not only by fans but also by Austrian newspaper Kurier. Some people here wanted a detailed translation of the Kurier´s news. Since it is a funny and harmless (and very likely false rumour), I will just translate the relevant passages as the article is mainly about the top Austrian players competing in front of their homecrowd in Kitzbuhel:

“There is something else which the two best Austrian tennis players have in common. Marach has been dating former Canadian tennis player Sonya Jeyaseelan for a short while now, Melzer on the other side has been seen with Russian Anastasia Myskina very often. The former world number two intensively followed the Austrian´s practice sessions in Kitzbuhel before she left on Monday for a WTA-tourney in Sweden.

Melzer and Myskina played last December at the tele.ring-Trophy in St. Anton, in Australia and Paris they even competed together in mixed doubles. The Russian has already been seen at the ATP-tournament in Stuttgart where Melzer reached the round of last 16. Melzer did not comment on the assumption that he and Myskina (”she´s a real jokester”)were in a relationship. “That´s private”, he said.”

I assume it is and as much as I respect celebs´ wishes for privacy it is still just funny. Bottom line. Whatever is going on, I am sure he will have his fingers crossed for Nastya during her match tomorrow so that is great.

Yes he did indeed fight. I know he gave it his all because he always does. To bad he could not get a break when he had so many chances.

Hopefully he will do great in the doubles. I think he plays better doubles than singles. Watching him in doubles is such fun.

Great result by J&J.

:rolls: You know what? This fortnight I am saying "At least I won't have to worry about him in matches anymore", about a couple of my guys. It's a nice little coping mechanism...and I don't know whether it's pessimistic or optimistic. Just trying to find some silver lining

Due to prior commitments (aka Jarkko Nieminen), I have to temporarily withdraw my Austrian support. But, only for one match! :rolls: Graydon Oliver has only played a couple of ATP tournaments this year, so it is nice to see him doing well! But, if he and Jarkko lose, they lose to a great team :yeah: and then... til they meet Jonas/Max in the final (LOL!?) I will cheer loudly.

Oh... Barbara, I am getting Foxtel / Cable TV this week, so I might actually SEE some tennis from now on! I might have decent input into match discussions. I'm very happy :)

Kristen I am happy you will get to see tennis. You are getting the USO aren't you?

Knew you would abandon us for Jarkko in this match today. Still I want to see J & J win it. They start in a few minutes.

Today I printed out a lot of pictures you took in Adelaide, Sydney and the AO of Jurgen to use in his book. I wish I could find more from other tournaments. When I was in Cincy you sent a link for pictures from the RO. I would appreciate if you could give it to me again. Her computer in Cincy can not talk to mine here. Lynn is at the Open and hopefully she got some shots of Jurgen. Here ones from New Haven were so nice.

It will take lots of work to make Jurgen's book this year. It is more fun when he wins a lot :D . He has done very well in a few tournaments so those pages will be fun to make.

Who do you want to see win the singles at the USO? Today it was sad to see Agassi sitting their crying after he lost. For his health I hope he did not wait to long to retire. The cordisone shots can do damage after you get to many.

Kristen got her wish. Nieminen/Oliver df Knowle/Melzer 7-6(5), 6-2. I was hoping for a win by J & J and certainly thought it would be closer.

Alex Peya/Phau also lost today to Damm/Paes 3-6, 6-7 (4).

Not a good day for the Austrian men at the Open.

Julian Knowle is still in the mixed doubles I believe.

Now it is on to the next tournament. Oh forgot Julian plays mixed doubles today. He will need lots of luck to win this match. Martian N. and Bob Bryan will definitely be the favorites.

I have my fingers crossed for Andy Murray (he would have to play Davydenko who I like) and Berdych. We will just have to wait and see how this all plays out. Happy Roger beat Spadea. If you read Tennis Week.com you would know why. By the way as of this week Alex Peya is leading my contest. I translataed it but it still did not make much sense. Kept saying that Jurgen wanted to win the first round at the USO. Obviously he did. It did mention Miska, but Jurgen said something like "You make what you want of it". Not sure what that means, but I think he did not want to discuss it.

I have to say that Simon lost that match not that Jurgen won it. At least following it on MTF made it seem that way. Tomorrow Jurgen only has to play doubles, Friday for the singles against Ramirez Hidalgo(ESP).

jurgen won today in single 6/4 6/2 but he lost in double 2/6 0/6...the score of the double is sad but it's okay since he won in single and it's still more important...he will play p-h mathieu...best of luck jurgen!!!

Jurgen will need some luck in his semi-final match. I believe he can win. He needs to know he can win. Fight for it Jurgen.

Pfft. You know what? I wondered if that was how he got to a final... seriously. I don't mean to attack Jurgen in any way, but I'm so pissed off when this happens, esp in such an important match ((Ok, that AND I'm annoyed that PHM had defeated a nice Romanian guy previously,,, and now he goes and retires. I would have much preferred him to retire against Crivoi, and then let Melzer slaughter Crivoi and get to the final that way  )

Now I have to go back to GM and edit my post regarding Jurgens consistency. Anyway, good luck to him. He better win it. For Karls sake. I want Karl to feel like his hard work is paying off :rolls:

Yes, I am so happy and excited for him. He did so well this week. All of his fans can feel proud of him. Now he needs to keep up the good tennis against Mexico next week in the DC.

He will not have to many days to enjoy this victory.

I read this on Sport1.at and it explains why Karl was not at the match. He was trying to get there.

Weather had remained in the past week in Austria, wanted to come on Sunday to the final to Romania, but the airplane with the Melzer Coach on board had to again turn around briefly after the start, because the pilot had noticed oil smell in the cockpit.

At the risk of offending many people,. I'm going to say it anyway....

I really hope that the Austrians can build on this win. I don't rate the Mexicans at all, and now they're going to have to play a decent team. It would be nice to see Jurgens DC record improve. For now though, I am delighted that he has been 100% successful in this tie  I've put some pictures in the DC thread [from dc site], if I find more of Jurgen, I'll add them.

Where is the DC thread located? I had hoped you put them on the Jurgen site at : http://groups.msn.com/JurgenMelzerDiscussionBoard on the thread for DC 2006 against Mexico. Had hoped you would add some of Oliver's matches.

I also hope Jurgen can build on his Davis Cup record. It has not been very good so far. As he improves it should continue to get better.

I was happy that Jurgen passed on playing and Rainer Eitzinger had a chance to win a point for Austria as well as Oliver Marach scoring 2 points.

I was sad to see Oliver had lost to Almagro 1-6, 4-6 in Palermo. Maybe to much partying after beating Mexico. It really was soon to have to start concentrating on tennis again.

Yes, just three months and you will see tennis. I know the rest of the year takes a long time, but it has been since August that I have not seen live tennis. Actually I will watch the seniors play in Memphis next month. I find they are fun to watch. They claim Pat Cash is one of the players and I have never seen him play so I look forward to that.

Jurgen is taking this week off and then is scheduleld to play Open deMoselle in Metz, France.

Thanks for posting these nice pictures of Jurgen. It was so nice to get home and see that he had reached the finals again. I was so sad he lost in singles but even more so in doubles. To lose 6 points in a row when all you needed was one to win the match must have been so horrible for them. They will need to win in Vienna and not let the loss get them down.

I am sad that he broke up with Julia as she was a very nice girl for him.

Roddick does not want to be Popstar
Out for Debütant Fischer
BA-APPROX.-Trophy
The town hall could not be as full on Wednesday as for a long time: Superstar Andy Roddick, the US-Open finalist, and Jürgen Melzer, the Metz finalist and undisputed number 1 of Austria, have their Erstrunden portions on the program. Melzer, which came on Monday of its success week into France (final in the single and double) to Vienna, looks forward already to the match against the previous year finalists Juan Carlo Ferrero. “However it is a very heavy the matter, I sees themselves as favorite”, did not say Melzer.

“Extreme heavy breaking into”
Ferrero is the number 17 of the world, the lining in Vienna is very slow nevertheless and - the Spaniard leads also in the Head ton Head with the Niederösterreicher 3:0 (on hard place, sand and lawn). “Natural would be beautiful it to play here a quarter final against Roddick but in addition we must win both only two portions.” Melzer did not want to low-stack under any circumstances, but Ferrero was “extremely heavy breaking into”.

But heavy breaking into it vacated past week some from the way into to be altogether fifth ATP final game. Among other things in the round of the last sixteen also a very much engaged Marat Safin with 7:6 in the third sentence. In the Ranking Melzer thereby climbed at place of 39, only six ranks already separates it from “personal best”. But it has in this year only in Vienna and pc. Petersburg the possibility, still to toppen.

Full self-assurance
Melzer: “That is nevertheless that, for which one works. , Where the cream plays de la cream, there one wants to prove oneself. In the form, in which I play now, I do not have to be afraid also of it. “For the year 2007 this placement however now already means that it is fixed starter with the highly endowed mast R-S series stubborn kidneys. There there are many points to get also, separate one in the first round, remain the result importantly for the world rank list however. “That is nevertheless that, for which one works. , Where the cream plays de la cream, there one wants to prove oneself. In the form, in which I play now, I must be afraid also not of it”, strotzt myself the blond tuft before self-assurance.

“Success lends wings”
Naturally it is physically also completely beautifully tired after the efforts of the past weeks with Bucharest title, Daviscup and Metz. “However so long I on so a wave float, is everything correct”, said Melzer grinsend. Success lends wings finally. As through the entire Austrian tennis a noticeable jerk went. Whereupon to rest one may not do itself however, so Melzer. “We must continue to work on it and bring successes. If we play three months badly, we have the same salad again.”

Melzer is already accompanied in Vienna like in Metz by its friend Anastasia Myskina. “, I say that now once. We are together, stop in such a way arose, but I want to say more and do not have I to it also”, confirm to Melzer officially the obvious. The Weltranglisten-14. from Russia is by the way at present hurt.

I am sad that he broke up with Julia as she was a very nice girl for him.

Likewise. She seemed quite lovely. She'll do well for herself though I think. Hopefully find a nice intelligent local boy who doesn't have to travel the world to earn his pay. I have nothing against Myskina. I think she's quite good looking, and she's a bit of a choker at times, so they are well suited. But it's irritating me that this is all people talk about relating to Jurgen. He's one of my top guys, he pisses me off a lot (as you know!) but I would love it if people spoke about his tennis more than him shagging another tennis player.

Jurgen wins a final. Ohh it must be Nastya's influence!

Jurgen into another final. Oooooh! Myskina must be with him :aplot:

:explode:

PS. Go Jürgen, in the tournament.

Jurgen has just defeated Juan Carlos 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-3.:worship: What a great win for him. Next he will most likely play Roddick. That should be a battle because they are both playing well and have lots of talent.

Jurgen and his girlfreinds are his business.

Keep up the good playing Jurgen in both singles and doubles.

I'm so glad that he won today!!!! (nothing to do with myskina for sure...she is not able to suport herself so someone else must be mission impossible!!!!)
I was sure that he will win this one!!!! now he has to keep on playing like that to do well in his own country!!! it must be realy exciting for him to come here in such a great shape!

As I had some time yesterday evening I finally watched the doubles final as well and despite knowing the result already, it was still very disappointing to see the proof. I just would have been so great if they had won this final in Vienna  They saved two match points, then had an own match point, but finally the third match point was it for the Czech team.

Even more disappointing they again did not win because in Metz the week before they squandered six match points in a row which must have been even more frustrating :(

Good for Jurgen and Julian. They will have a tough match against Dlouhy/Vik tomorrow. Hope Jurgen has to wait to rest for at least the rest of this week.

For the past sevral years there has been a tournament at the end of the season which is refered to as "the biggest tennis party of the year" in St. Anton (I think). Yes, that's right. It should be really fun normally and according to the official homepage it should be held this year again (http://www.tennistrophy.net) and Alex Antonitsch, a co-commentator (my favourite one of all!!) mentioned it during Vienna already that he is likely going to participate in the seniour competition, if his back allows him to do so. I went to a few matches and had a little holiday in this region with my friend (not far away from me anyway) in 2003 the last time. I definitely think there is going on a lot, every player usually has a bunch of families or friends with him and with the other players and officials of the tournament or sponsors they do a lot of things together and party deep into the night, sometimes they are in normal everyday locations where many other tourists are. The parties and fun after skiing is also called après-ski. And Austria is the biggest stronghold of this "after-ski culture" IMO. Although the word is french, it's never as much fun as in other skiing regions such as Switzerland, Germany, Italy or France.

It was so close and yet they lost. After winning the first set, I really felt they could win it. Losting the second set 5-7 and the match tie break 6-10 is heartbreaking for them. I think that ended their chances for Shanghi (sp?).

Next year everyone will have to watch out for them. They seem to be getting better and better. Just check out how many finals they reached this year.

This is from an interview with Tomas Muster on Sport1.at It is a word for word translation. Just so you understand Muster translates to Sample.

Sport1: Jürgen Melzer seems to be finally come up in the autumn the button. Do you believe that it continues to can now so and/or which you think to it capable of in the future?

Sample: I always said that he has the potential to play between Top 10 and 20. In the spring he has to come now the large chance for the first time into the Top 20, since he has to defend only few points. Besides it is now soon in a position, owing to which it is set with large tournaments. I quite think it to him capable of. I want to anticipate not too far, but the first quarter for it will be probably trailblazing

I am sure that Jurgen played hard in the match. He had his chances to win. Why he lets these types of matches get away can not be explained. He should have won it.

The doubles loss I can understand because they were playing a doubles specialist team. Last time they lost to them in a match tiebreak.

Better of luck for the rest of the season Jurgen. This was only the first tournament and now you have a match under your belt. I know you can do better.

Oh my goodness you guys... the first and third sets were brilliant. I have never seen him play so well, so confident. In the second set, Fabrice got his act together a little, and Jurgen made stupid mistakes, he didn't know what to do. But in the first... I could have sworn it was some other tennis player. Fantastic tennis.

PS. Yep, I gave him your letter, but didn't see him long enough to ask him about doubles. If I bump into him tomorrow I'll hassle him about it... him or Karl. Karl was nice and supportive today, really getting into it. Mid-match I found out Nadal had retired from his match. SO excited about that (but sad for Nadal of course)

Kudos to Jurgen today. That first set of tennis was absolutely brilliant and the way he fought back after that lapse in the second set was just as good.

It looked like he had a bit of support there today, hopefully they are there tomorrow because he will more than likely need it playing against a heavily supported Guccione.

Jurgen's statements on his strategy to beat Berdych... :)

Sydney.- Melzer breezed past Berdych 6-2 6-4.

Melzer, ranked 40 and unseeded in Melbourne, adapted his game plan to put good depth on his groundstrokes against Berdych and it worked with spectacular success.

"I had to change a little bit of my game plan and try to have good depth on the court," Melzer said.

"I did, and it's tough for him to hit winners if the ball is long, and so I really think I played that well to force him to the errors."

MightyJurgenfan
01-12-2007, 08:10 AM
What a shame he got food poisening and had to withdraw.

Melzer: "Of course it's disappointing. I mean, I have played a great week so far, and over the last night I just felt sick, like really sick. I had some kind of stomach virus. I think I picked up something probably from the food last night. Maybe sushi wasn't that smart. So I've been throwing up in the morning and really feeling bad. So I tried with an IV, but it's just not working. It's really disappointing.

"[The doctor] says that it looks like a virus, and there's not much he can do. I don't have any stomach cramps or something."

Jurgen is very sick and it was not food poisoning from the Sushi. He has a virus and has not been able to keep any food down. Unless a miracle happens it looks like he may not be able to play the AO. Even if he tries he will be weak.

Hope he gets well soon. From what I read the flu is going around in Australia so Kristen beware.

He not only did he give it a try, he won 6-4, 6-4, 7-6. I felt he had to win in 3 straight sets to have a chance. Next he will play Tommy Robredo which will be tough, but Jurgen can do it.

Yes, Jurgen lost today. He played very late and I realize he had a rain delay in the match before it started. I checked at 4 a.m. my time and they still had not started. He is still bothered by the flu according to Tennisweb.at.

Thanks for the picture. I will use it in his scrapbook for 2007. I only have one other picture of him at the AO so far and hope Kristen took several.

Have you visited my site for Jurgen. The title does not sound appealing but the site is all about Jurgen and the other top Austrian men players. Everyone is welcome to join and make comments.

I had hoped they would win it, but it was not meant to be.
Now Jurgen can go home and get needed rest to recover from his illness. He should be ready for the Davis Cup against Argentina. Best of luck to them in that tie.

Julian is playing with Sun in mixed doubles today. There match was stopped at 5-1 with Julian and Sun in the lead. Hope Julian wins it.

The victory of the team will depend of Jürgen. He can win his 2 simple and the double with Julian. Without Nalbandian it's a little easier.

Good luck Austria :D

Since Alex Peya is doing great in Zagreb do you feel he should be allowed to play on the team? He was selected as a practice player, but I feel he should get to play.

Stefan really gave Ljubicic a battle before he lost to him today.

I believe, if I understand what I read, that the surface in Zagreb is the same type of surface as the DC will be held on. Alex likes this surface and has played well on it.

We will have to wait and see what happens.

this has nothing to do with his tennis but I thought I should port it anyway since rumors said they were engaged
here is what nastya myskina said about her boyfriend in a recent interview:
"My boyfriend is not from sports world, he runs his business, has his friends and interests. We don't see each other as often as we would wish to but when I'm in Moscow we try to find spare time for ourselves."
looks like it is not Jurgen anymore but with nastya you never realy know...
