I don't think he will be playing this week, which will be a shame! Still he has enough tournies before the US open to make a seeding!!!

His neck injury was a bit unlucky, but he was diving around a fair bit! I have done the very same myself once when i twisted my neck whilst lifting something and it isn't nice, but it is one of these things that take a few days and it gradually goes away.

He had a nice draw in LA too!

Plenty to look forward to though!

Murray's fitness hurry
Eleanor Preston
Monday July 24, 2006
The Guardian

Andy Murray will undergo a scan today on his injured neck to decide when he will be fit to return.

He withdrew from the ATP Tour event in Los Angeles, starting this week, and his participation in his next scheduled event in Washington DC is also in doubt.

Murray was injured while playing Davis Cup doubles on Saturday.

Murray can ill-afford a long absence now. He has a slew of ranking points to defend in the run-up to next month's US Open, where he had hoped to be one of the 32 seeds.

The injury might further delay the start of a new coaching relationship with Brad Gilbert. An announcement on a deal between Murray, Gilbert and the Lawn Tennis Association has been postponed repeatedly due to contractual wrangles, though these at least appear to have been resolved.

Murray hopeful of swift comeback

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41927000/jpg/_41927136_murray_getty_203.jpg

Andy Murray expects to return to action in Washington next week after a neck injury proved less serious than feared.

The Briton withdrew from this week's Los Angeles event after picking up the injury during Great Britain's Davis Cup defeat by Israel over the weekend.

"I had a scan done on my neck Monday and it confirmed I had muscle spasms on my left side," Murray told his website.

"There was no significant damage to my spine, muscle or vertebrae so as of now I need a bit of rest."

Its official finally:

Gilbert Accepts Murray Coach Role

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41901000/jpg/_41901768_gilbert_getty_203.jpg

Brad Gilbert will be Andy Murray's new coach and work with the Lawn Tennis Association on other projects.

The American, 44, who has worked with Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick, will join Murray at next week's Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington.

LTA chief executive Roger Draper said: "Brad has a world-class track record.

"He will play a central role in helping us improve our performance and success, from elite players like Andy through to our up and coming talent."

Draper stressed: "Brad will be fully focused on front-line coaching and is not a replacement for the position of performance director.

"As part of our new strategy for British tennis we want the best people in the world actually 'on the ground' helping create more tennis champions."

Gilbert, a former top-five player who won 20 singles titles, said: "I'm really looking forward to working with Andy - he is one of the most talented young players on the tour.

"I am also looking forward to working at the LTA, and it's great to see Roger Draper making changes for the benefit of British tennis."

Scot Murray said: "Back in April, I set a very high standard for what my next coach needed to have in terms of experience, and Brad meets all the requirements.

"While growing up, Agassi was one of the players I looked up to.

"He won several Grand Slams and reached number one in the world with Brad, so I am delighted to now have Brad as my coach.

"It's great to see that the new LTA are looking to bring in the best coaches in the world to help British tennis."

Murray, 19, has been without a coach since splitting with Mark Petchey last year, and his results this season have been patchy.

As well as coaching Murray, Gilbert will also work on other LTA programmes including leading junior tennis camps at under-12 and under-14 levels.

He will also work with the LTA's network of coaches and its high-performance clubs and academies.

This has been a long time coming but sweet all the same. Gilbert is everything Andy needs but the real benefits of the partnership may not be evident until next year. Although there is a lot of hard work to be done over the next few weeks, beginning next week in Washington.

He couldn't have got a better coach. Now he has to realise his potential and become a winner. He must believe he can be number one.

I wish Andy the best of luck in his next tournies :D

However, I really hope Brad doesn't take the creativity out of Andy's game. I know it's selfish but I love his dropshots, and Gilbert was cringing basically everytime Andy hit one at Wimbledon. I just don't like Gilbert at all, and I hope Andy stays with his game.

Murray 'needs to become stronger'

Brad Gilbert will concentrate on building up Andy Murray's strength when he starts work as the Briton's coach.

The American, who was appointed by the Lawn Tennis Association on Wednesday, expects to start making significant progress after the US hardcourt season.

"There's no magic pill to take that makes you a better player," Gilbert told The Times.

"Andy needs to become physically stronger, and over the next year that will be a big focus for us."

He added: "The best time to make changes will be after the Open; it's hard to make any real big impressions when he is going straight into tournaments."

Gilbert helped guide both Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick to the top of the world rankings and looks like being a hard task-master with 19-year-old Murray.

"If Andy Murray isn't an early-morning person, that's going to change," said Gilbert.

"The standards I set are those I learnt from my only coach, Tom Chivington from Foothills College in Los Altos, California - you put in an honest, hard day's work every day.

"It doesn't mean you are going to win every time but it sure gives you a better chance. Every day you want to be that little bit better.

"And it can never be the coach's way or the highway; the player will have his opinions and I hear Andy's are pretty strong. I'll certainly have mine and it's about where we meet."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/tennis/5219538.stm

IMO, I really think Brad could be the best possible person for Andy. He's a really good coach and I think he will help to improve Andy's game all around. I'm just wondering if they're going to get along :scared: As it said in the article, both guys have really strong opinions and a lot of times they're probably going to clash.

Well it is a no-brainer that Andy needs to be fitter and stronger! A coach like Gilbert would be embarrassed to have Andy the way he is now. He does need to be beefed up and his stamina needs to be 300% better.

His draw for Washington is excellent. 2nd round match is likely to be Luczak who is not to be taken lightly but Andy can beat him. Then it will be F. Lopez and we know he blows so hot and cold it is hard to say, but his style will suit Andy and i think he can win that too.

Agassi in the quarters would be a dream and i have my thoughts on Andy playing Andre which i will keep for another day, but we all know he is a hero to Muzza and he will be determined to get through for a chance at a match with the master.

Hope he is better and can do well here!!!

He even rises a ranking place today without playing last week, back up to 35 from 36 the previous week. I am almost 100% confident he will be seeded for the US open. There are always a couple of players missing from the top 30 through injury and so on and his present ranking might just about do it! However he should be aiming high, top 30 by US Open and top 20 by the end of the year. Next year will be the year to push for the top 10, and with his indifferent start to the year (San Jose aside) he can do it!

Looks like it will be wednesday for his first game here, as his potential opponent's don't play until tomorrow.

I actually got to see the match and the first set was kind of boring. Andy was just too good and Fish seemed a bit out of it almost. The second set was more competitive as Andy was broken as he was serving for the match. He did have a second break though as an insurance, thankfully . Still used the drop shot an awful lot but it was working today most of the time.

shyscots25
08-05-2006, 08:45 PM
The way Dmitry plays should suit Andy. He can cope with his power in the rallies and is a bit smarter whereas Tursunov just whacks it around everywhere. The main thing will be reading the serve, for once he gets an eye for it, bingo! Andy seems to have a talent for it, and if you think about it he has beaten all the big servers he has faced. It is no fluke Andy has beaten Roddick twice for these guys don't register the same advantage they would against most other players. It gradually withers their confidence away as their gameplan falls apart.

It will be tough, he must serve well or Dmitry could get a run on him, but i quite fancy his chances. Also Clement beat Safin, and of the two we know who Andy would rather play. Would be a nice chance to get some revenge for the US Open match last year.

It was an excellent win, but Clement will be a totally different style and it will be interesting to see how he handles it. A win here would be amazing before the masters next week where his draw isn't too bad really.

Great stuff, it was encouraging to see Andy playing so confidently. I always know from Andy from his general demeanour on-court whether he will win or not. He looked confident and right on his game. I also noticed some technical differences appearing which is nice. He should finish this year strongly.

He will just make the top 30 if he wins here hopefully and then its onwards and upwards.

I like Andy's draw especially now Nalbandian is out (major shock!) so his section is really open. The problem is his first match is a very tough one. Ferrer is a clay courter, but he can play well on decoturf when he wants to, and already has a SF from Miami masters earlier in the year. He won his last tournament in Stuttgart when he came back from the dead to beat Acasuso.

Andy should have beat David on clay earlier this year and i know it will be a different match to that one. Muzza has a good chance here but he will have to play really really well to win and if he does, then he has a nice open draw with players he is capable of beating all the way to the SF as far as i can see. Thats not to say he will get that far, but his draw could have been a lot worse.

Ferrer is tough however, so come on Andy let's surge into the top 30 here with some nice points!

shyscots25

Duncan is so right, he has you hiding behind the sofa as he threatens to throw a winning situation away. There will come a time when he wins these games at the first attempt, with no possibility of a comeback, but he is just not that clinical yet, not against good players anyway, for Ferrer and even Henman are both very talented.

I am excited though, this week more than last because this is a major tournament and success here can see Andy make great leaps up the rankings. Moya should suit Andy, they will trade shots and Andy can compete for sure. Moya's serve won't scare him, but it could be very tricky. On his day Moya is still a very formidable player. Any guy who has beaten Nadal this year commands total respect. Having said that, what a fillet if Andy can make it through! A quarter final against Sanguinetti, Niemenen or Dancevic. Andy is capable of beating all those guys, and for this calibre of event, that is one cosy draw. Not to say it will be easy, for Jarko especially has had a great year and can be very tough.

Andy has superb chances here, and his overall preparations for US Open could not have been better. Next week to come too where we hope for a good draw, but to be honest, i would fancy Andy against anyone but Nadal or Fed right now.

But the chance is there, Murray v Nadal in the Rogers Cup Semi-final....we can but dream!

Andy at the moment is very frustrating but at the same time im very excited because i know there is so much more to come. He is so the unfinished article and once his consistency and strength and stamina improves he is going to be one hell of a player to watch and support!

:woohoo: Andy!!

Saw most of the match against Tim and he made it harder for himself in that 2nd set. He could of just served it out, but then he got broken twice in a row. Thankfully, he saved a set point for Tim and forced a tiebreaker. Still, against a tougher opponent that could be fatal.

I think his match is going to be shown on ESPN tomorrow. :) During tonight's coverage, I believe they said Andy's match was on at 1:00 so *yay*! I can't complain, but ESPN has been giving Andy a lot of TV time mostly in part to Brad, but still I can't complain.

Andy won 6-2 6-4 :woohoo:

He played really good, he still could have closed it out a little sooner but a win is a win. Next, he will probably face Nieminien which will be tough again but for sure nothing Andy can't get through.

Good luck Andy :yeah:

shyscots25
08-10-2006, 08:29 PM
Just got in from work and so i missed the match, but was pleased if unsurprised that Andy won. Moya is not the player he was and Andy puts so much pressure on the server with his consistent high quality returns I just felt he would win this, although i did think Moya had enough to take a set off him.

He should play Niemenen and i would expect Andy to win. Jarko is good and a player i admire, he really slogs it out well, but has few flashy shots, and i think overall technically Andy has more overall ability. But he is very dangerous. He came as close as anyone to beating Nadal on clay this year, he was a set and 4-2 up on the master before the inevitable comeback. It will be a good test but as i said yesterday for this stage of a Masters tournament an unseeded player like Andy would normally face a higher calibre of player.

Let's keep it going!!!!!

:bigclap: Andy!!

Saw the match today and he played pretty well except for the little hiccup when serving for the match in the 2nd set. I think he should be able to beat Jarkko tomorrow (ESPN is showing the match at 1:00). A semifinal result in a master series would be fantastic and who knows maybe even a final. I don't want to get ahead of myself because he needs to get through Jarkko first. :yeah:

With Nadal's loss that only opens up his draw even more. :D

shyscots25
08-11-2006, 08:02 AM
Yep Nadal's loss will gives chances, and a few of them will think they can do it. Gasquet v Berdych is the best QF in my opinion, or at least the most interesting and i would think the winner of that tie would be most people's favourites to reach the final.

Its just one at a time for Andy, Jarko had to save 4 MP's i think before eventually winning against the unfancied italian veteran. Murray finished earlier and he had a shorter match - in fact win or lose it has all been straight sets lately for Andy! He seems to be enjoying the new setup from what he has been saying, and even enjoying getting up early. I think he is feeling a little tired, but he has big chances here and i am sure he will be pumped up to win this one.

He can do it!!

YABBBBBBBBBBAAAAAAAAA DAAAAAAAABAAAAAAAAA DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Murray Wins 6-4 6-7 6-3!!!!

I hate livescores but it was worth the wait!!! Absolutely fabulous stuff. Andy has surpassed all realistic expectations this week and everything now is a bonus. He will get more points than even if he had won last week, and also his biggest payday yet which i am sure he won't mind either.

Gasquet next, and really he has nothing to lose! It was nice to see him come through a tight 3 setter against a top 20 player as previously the third set saw Murray fall away.

Congrats to Andy on his win today :) I think getting Brad Gilbert for a Coach was a great thing for Andy to do. I see a change in Andy already :D
Yes he still seems to lose some forcus at times and the serve isn't the greatest, but otherwise he is great. He can cover the court and make some shots that you wouldn't think were possible look easy. I think he is a player on his way up :woohoo:

Andy

Good win-- a little too close for comfort but at least he won. I saw the match and he could have closed it out in the 2nd set. He was driving me insane throughout the match today. I think he has some sorta of block with closing out matches (and sets). It was a really, really streaky match. Andy's really lucky Jarkko was having such a hard time on his serve. If not, he could have lost this match. Oh well he won anyway and onto his first Masters semifinal! :yeah:

Sorry, but I can't root for Andy tomorrow. I'm a Richard fan first and foremost. I do hope its a good match and I hope the better player wins. :)

Some post-match interview quotes from Andy:

"I'm definitely not disappointed about this week," said Murray, who also reached the final in Washington last Sunday.

"I obviously could have played a little better today, but I've had two really good weeks.

I'm going to be inside the top 25 now. I'm going to get a seeding at the US Open. I've got a lot of things to be happy about."

"He has got a pretty quick action, and it's not like there's a huge, huge wind-up. He is not that tall either, doesn't look like he is putting that much effort into it but he times it really well.

"It's a quick action, so it's tough to read when he's going to hit the ball.

"Most guys have a slightly higher throw-up and knee bend. He just hits it out of his hand. You know, he serves pretty accurately as well, so it makes it tough to return.

"Against a lot of players, they can hit big serves, but it will be right in your striking zone. Against him, he might not hit it as hard as some, but he gets it away."

Poor display to end a super summer. Wrong tactics, in fact the same tactics that didn't work the last time these two met in Indian Wells in the spring, poor execution and generally a match in which not much went right. The third set was truly horrible from both players, with Andy imploding at a time when Davydenko's game had fallen to pieces.

Anyway, should finish the year top 20 (probably needed to make semis of US Open if he was to have a chance of top 10) and be inside the top 10 by Wimbledon as he has practically nothing to defend in Aus, Indian Wells/Miami and on the clay, so even modest results will boost his entry ranking score.

With a reliable serve and competitive fitness he should be an excellent player. Still unclear how long that might take to achieve though, as the progress from 2005 to 2006 is minimal; fitness seems a bit better but serve worse than last year.

Andy's had a great run at the US open and just hope he can improve on his fitness and his game a bit more and no doubt he'll be going even further than he did this year! :)

I didn't see the final set but I was surprised by the scoreline. Andy should of put up a better fight. I hate his "I don't like 11 am matches" excuse. He needs to get over that and fast.

Still, its been great supporting him these past few weeks. He's been playing great under Brad and his ranking is improving steadily. He just needs to work on his fitness which I suspect will be a main aspect off the off-season training. Expect to a more musucular Andy come January in Australia (or at least I hope so)
