Hopefully not Australia. I couldnt stand it. Spain vs Aus again in final (I wish), with Moya playing Hewitt FIRST to give them the upper hand ;)

Ha. I don't think that it will be quite as easy as you'd like it to be, assuming Team Argentina is actually in full health.

Let's say Marat wins both his singles - entirely possible if he's also at full health.

I'd favour Argentina against Marat-Whoever in doubles. Hell, even if Kafelnikov manages to rop 20 kilos and pairs up with Marat or Misha, I'd still favour Argentina in the doubles. When is the last time they lost the doubles point?

Then, even on ice, I would think that both Nalbandian and Coria have a good shot at Misha or Davydenko.

But hey... maybe you know something I don't :p

Dirk
02-08-2004, 06:08 AM
Saffy will be like Kaffy before him and Roger now. Winning both of his matches but going home sad because of the doubles (maybe) and the other singles. I do think that maybe a healthy Mikhail would have a good shot with David on clay. I do think Argentina is the likely winner of this year's DC.

WyveN

I am still picking USA although they will probably need Russia to beat Argentina

Jazzy
02-08-2004, 08:16 AM
i waz going for Spain, but without Ferrero & Moya, it looks not so good for the spanish team!!! with Australia out the DC is wide open for any country!! i'll say Argentina even tho they haven't won the DC b4 & made it to the finals in 1981, i still think with Nalbandian & Coria on their side, they still have a chance to win!! GO ARGENTINA!!

TheBoiledEgg
02-08-2004, 11:14 AM
Becca, i wouldnt be suprised if we put down a clay court vs Argentina :tape:

Marat will still win his singles matches
plus Misha will have a good shot in the other tie.

plus clay nulifies Nalby not that he's got a hope vs Marat on any surface.

Belarus vs Argentina... home or away?

Chloe le Bopper
02-08-2004, 04:35 PM
btw... even if the tie had occured, and Russia had laid clay - I'm not sure that would have been much help to them. Coria would likely beat whoever and stand a very good chance of beating Marat, imo. And I'd still give the doubles to Argentina. Then all you need is Nalbandian to win one singles match. If he can beat Ferrero and Moya on clay, one would think he would stand a chance against Misha

Blearus are at home to the Argies

Chloe le Bopper
02-08-2004, 04:41 PM
Blearus are at home to the Argies
As in, they are at home versus the Argies? Or they are playing the Argies, who are at home?

I'm finding this rather ambiguous for some reason. I think it's just lack of sleep. Or maybe I'm just slow.

Chloe le Bopper

so Mad Max will make it 13 wins in a row in DC

they better get Alexander Skrypko involved in that tie, much better than Shvec or that 15 yr old.

Chloe le Bopper
02-08-2004, 04:51 PM

this tie when he wins his two singles :)

should be quite some fun in Minsk :)

no doubt we'll get USA vs SWE

MisterQ
02-08-2004, 05:07 PM
I think the USA could win this year (and I'm not saying that because of my nationality ;) )

They have a stable, top doubles team for the first time in years, plus a top 3 player in Roddick and several other solid guys.

Spain and Argentina are also real contenders, and Switzerland must be considered simply because of Federer.

Davis Cup Predictions:

F: Argentina over Spain (with home court providing the difference).

SF: Argentina over USA (on the red clay).
SF: Spain over Switzerland (because Federer alone can only go so far).

Deboogle!.
02-09-2004, 06:08 AM
Some of the QF will be very interesting. I think it will largely depend on who's healthy and who plays. I would think USA, Argentina, Switzerland, and Spain would be the faves to move onto SF, I think there's plenty of upset potential in there. So I think it'll be really exciting! :)

WyveN
02-09-2004, 08:18 AM

If these are indeed the semis then Switzerland should beat Spain as it will be on grass.
But of course the French will be very difficult for the Swiss.

Assuming of course, that Spain doesn't win the doubles and both of the other singles. Or that Moya or Ferrero doesn't all of a sudden become grasscourt extrodinaire and beat Federer.

At least you're not looking too far ahead though, and see the possible French threat. I'd been hearing for weeks now that Argentina might as well not even bother showing up to Russia for that tie... :)

Well Federer owns Moya and Ferrero would be unlikely to beat him on grass.
From what I saw of the Spanish doubles in Australia, they were pretty awful. When is the last time Spain won the doubles away from home? None of the combination seem very threatening

Winston's Human
02-09-2004, 02:07 PM
My mistake. I misread the location of their last tie and thought Switzerland and Spain would be playing in Spain.

If they put in a grass court in Switzerland for the tie, then I think Switzerland is 50-50 to make the finals.

If the final is Argentina vs. Switzerland, I would say Argentina -- again due to the homefield/surface advantage.

Spain won't be using Lopez-Corretja again, so that you saw in Australia is irrelevant.

And I'm sorry, but a head to head of 4-3 over Ferrero is not fucking ownage. Jesus. If he did own him that would be fine, but he doesn't. I have no doubt that he would beat Ferrero on grass, but let's not pretend Ferrero has never been able to beat him before. Thank you.

Dirk

Swiss won't play it on grass. It would be too cold to play it on grass over there right? Indoor grass? I think it would be an indoor carpet court. Argentina will win. Kill the thread well until the USA Argentina semi  and George I think they have a very good shot at the US on hard too.

Wouldn't the tie be in Argentina since Switzerland hosted their only two prior ties (albeit in 1952 and 1923 per the Davis Cup website).

Since they haven't played after the new format was set up in 1972 (I think). The home advantage would be decided by a flip of a coin or some other random process.

Joking punches wyver in the arm. I am still very confident that they won't win the Davis Cup.

The only possibility is if clay was all of a sudden extinct.

Yes, the home tie is decided when two teams haven't played each other. They draw lots which is like two balls in a bowl and the one picked out will have the home tie, then the alternate process begins.

In Davis cup, individual talent is not enough to win, otherwise some countries could win every year, and France never. And that's what I love in this competion...

spain will at least reach the final again.
last year, in the final, their best player (jc ferrero) played extremely bad,
but this year, together with ferrero, moya, costa, nadal, ... i believe they can win.

i hope the usa DOESN'T win!!! although they make a (good) chance IF they can play on hard court :( (i wish them all clay of the world, gnahahahaha  )

QF:
Switzerland over France
Spain over Holand
Argentina over Belarus
USA over Sweaden

SF:
Argentina over USA (leathal weapon: clay lol)
Spain over Switzerland

F:
Argentina over Spain (we're local, we've got the doubles, and, although i love ferrero, he's a very irregular guy)

That's all i gotta say :)

It will be very difficult for Argentina now with the injury problems in their squad, that plus the very fast surface will make the tie against Belarus very difficult.

So I will say Spain, even though I want Argentina to win.

spain will have home advantage for the remaining ties if they get thru to the final....doubles won't be the deciding factor for thier ties cos they have strong singles clay players...i see them losing the doubles rubber and 1 of the singles player will have to win 2 singles live rubber...they certainly are the favourite...but like some said...in DC it can be very interesting...;)

I think Argentina will win. There are just too many good Argentine players in men's tennis. Just look back at the French Open (Roland Rarros). It's like Russia in Women's tennis.

Now if you think I have a bias: Not liking Federer, and wanting Roddick to win, since I'm from U.S.A. Think again. Yeah, the U.S. team may be good, but I think Argentina has better players to win especially if it is on clay. (Guillermo Coria, Gaston Gaudio, Juan Ignacio Chela...)

I hope Ferrero wont have any injuries 24-26 sept (and in the final in december)
His abductor is annoying him again :(
I'd like to see the Ferrero-Grosjean match! (they probably have to play each other)
I'm going for Juan Carlos there, though I like Seb too! definitly JC :P
But even without Ferrero Spain has great chances!
Spain has a great team and both semifinal & final will be played in Spain, on clay!
Nothing could go wrong seems to me...
