Week 43: Nottingham (champion: Alexander Waske, GER)

Fact sheet attached.

A little premature admittedly, but since this is the next well attended Challenger in the UK, I thought it deserves some prior attention. It will be on the indoor hardcourts of the Nottingham Tennis Centre, where the Red Letter Days Open is held. I will try and be there for all or most of this event - but I insist on getting a hotel room this time, instead of travelling up and down like I did for the grass!!


This is the tournament's umpteenth venue - 2004 it was in Bolton, and 2005 saw it move to Southampton. I believe there will also be a challenger in Shrewsbury in November. I just emailed a friend at the LTA who will forward me the factsheet for Nottingham.

There is also a smaller challenger in Shrewsbury, England - scheduled for early November.

Yeah, you're right. I only said smaller on the assumption that the format would be the same as last year, and the year before. Instead, they are both 25ks, so we should get two good turnouts :D Only problem is the Notts one is the same week as St Petersburg ATP etc, whereas before it was the same week as Madrid Masters - this may mean a less strong entry list. Hope not!

Ah so Notts hosts a winter challenger event again! Last time was November 2003 I think...and I saw the soon-to-be GS SF Joachim Johansson!! :bigclap:

I might try to have a nose around that week...but in all probability I'll be too busy.

Bit of a bummer that isn't during an AMS event...the entry list is probably going to be weak...if not, it will feature a lot of late withdrawals from players hoping to get into those 3 ATP events. :sad:

Not the strongest challenger, but should be easy enough for Boggo to do well in this, as there is no-one in there that he cant beat

It's not a bad field for a 25 + H, Boggo has 3 x 50 point wins to defend between now and end of Jan/ start of feb, and 12 points to defend this week (wk 43) from his Southampton QF last year, so he needs to do well here.

Pless, Carlsen and Waske will all take some beating, and Vico can beat almost anyone on his day. In this Challenger last year Vico beat Baghdatis in first round. :confused:

Pless reached final last year, beating a Brit in every round before losing to Haehnel in the final so he will have 35 to defend here, and as Number 1 seed will have high hopes for this week, so dont expect Boggo to just turn up and win, should be a good week, I will make it for at least 1 day.

Expect WC's to go to Baker, Goodall, Marray and Auckland, with Parmar missing out due to his lack of activity.

As far as I know, Challengers don't have qualifying lists :shrug:

Acceptance is based on sign-in on-site. So if you are not there before the deadline (some time later today, probably, though it may have already passed), you won't get in. And if you are there and ranked too low, tough cookie :p

Still can't find the qualifying draw on the ATP site :shout:

Hmm, based on their results this year in doubles in Challengers, they are strong contenders, but I would not consider them the ultimate favourites. Smit & Van Haasteren, Goodall & Hutchins, Cipolla & Economidis are tough opponents. I rate Vico highly in doubles, but I think Motti isn't that good.

Disappointing that only 1 Brit got through to the final round of Qualifying, as there were some winnable matches for them there, but good luck to Flanagan today, and hopefully he can make the main draw

Just shows how easy it would be for the LTA to set up a simple live scores page for their Challengers - doesn't have to be pretty, does it, all we care about is the numbers.

Good start for Mackin and Delgado, and it would be good for them both to pick up a win today. Alan especially, who has started to make a lot of progress over the last few weeks, and beating Vico would be a great win for him

Disappointing to see Jonny lose, but he had a tough draw, and to push Carlsen as close as he did is a good perfomance

I'm getting these scores texted in the form server initials + score in set by the way, e.g. am 31 means Mackin 3-1 up in the 2nd and about to serve. It may mean the odd mistake creeps in temporarily (either mine or blade's), but if so it's likely to get corrected on the next post and we're trying to make absolutely sure we don't report a set winner wrong.

Brief report on the Marray match:

Blade says that Jonny gave Carlsen (who has lots of ATP experience) a really good fight. In the 2nd set t/b, he was broken to go 4-2 down, then 5-3, then broke back and got to 5-5 before Carlsen found a winning pass and then served it out.

Blade gave me telephone commentary on the end of the Hutchins/Vacek 2nd set t/b - Ross went 1-5 down, got it back to 4-5, then saved 2 MPs at 4-6 before going set point up at 7-6, saved by Vacek with an ace. Shocking defeat for Boggo :eek: , it was his crosscourt backhand which let him down in the main, normally a really strong shot for him, today he seemed to pull it wide time and time again and really lost to a player that's not even in his league.

Many thanks :hatoff: Have been too busy today to really keep track of the scores, but it is much appreciated. I am always happy to see people are putting more love and attention into Challenger level tennis, seeing as it is often overshadowed by the ATP Tour.

I must say, I am not really getting the way the organization is scheduling these matches. Cervenak & Lacko vs. Prpic & Tourte on centre court (as well as the first two singles matches not containing any Brits), whereas the top British doubles teams are on the smaller courts, as well as Goodall and Bloomfield.

Does anyone know why this is?

Nah Cantre Court is just the same as the other courts...not sure why they refer to it like that. There's 6 indoor courts, all separated by mesh netting.

There are actually a total of 8 indoor courts, and are just four courts in a row either side. If you sit up in the viewing gallery you are above courts 2 & 3 and have a pretty poor view of courts 1 and 4.

You can sit above court 1 or alongside it in the cafe area but then you are behind glass and cant hear anything so you dont always know which way the close calls have been given so you are guessing at the score.

Courts 1 & 2 sometimes hit balls on to each others court and then the players on that court have to stop and play a let, this happenend to Goodall yesterday at break point and he was pretty mad because he was on top in a rally and suddenly had to stop because a ball had come on from Delgado's match.

The other court that was being used yesterday is a way over the other side so you have to move across to the other side to see it which is why there were less reports from that court.

The big problem with nottingham is that because they have the ATP event on grass the week before wimbledon, all of their effort goes into that and they arent really bothered about the challengers or futures to any real degree, and as such it tends to be run VERY low key.
