Doubling up

Who here is a big follower of the doubles?
To be honest, I am not the biggest fan of watching, or playing it.
I have noticed that the ATP are trying to promote this at the moment, with them getting some of the major players involved.
I have also noticed they have changed the rules on Deuce point, with them dropping the advantage point, allowing the server to select which side he wishes to serve to for game point; this speeds up some of the games immensley.
I went to Nottingham on Monday, and I saw a few doubles matches there. I particularly enjoyed PHM & Malisse teaming up to play Coatzee & Parrott, there was some exciting quick play and some light hearted competitiveness.
I was wondering what everyone elses thoughts are on doubles...
What would be your 'dream' doubles pairing? (don't say Xristos and Federer)

To tell you the truth, I am not too keen on doubles either. I am however intrigued by the new format. Unfortunately, in their effort to promote doubles, they left out a tiny bit of detail - SHOW MORE OF IT ON TV !!

I love doubles, it's fast and exciting, you get these crazy quick fun points all the time and there's more interaction and personality on court b/c it's double the players!

I don't know who my dream pairing would be though.

I love doubles, though I must admit I don't follow it as closely as singles. It's particularly fun to watch live, with fast points and players who actually seem to be enjoying themselves from time to time. I wish they'd show more of it on TV, but I can understand why they don't.

As for dream pairings, I couldn't pick one favorite.

I probably would be more excited by doubles if I saw it live - I haven't, as of yet. you must! it's a lot of fun!!!!!

Eclectic Goddess, please explain why you understand why they don't show much doubles, because I sure don't

My dream pairing would be Robredo/Moya. If they were paired up I'd watch them play any sport, including air hockey. :inlove:
This is a 'sport' I really enjoy playing.
Not sure how the doubles would work on this. :p

I am, as everyone knows, a big fan of doubles :D Just a slight correction to that, it is the receiver choice.

Good on the tournament organisers this week for putting doubles on the bigger courts & promoting it, a lot more events have been trying to make the effort to do so since Doubles Revolution, although one or two seem to have bitterly done the opposite!

:haha: thanks for correcting me.
Yeah, I thought they scheduled the doubles well yesterday.
I am not very good at playing doubles, I always find myself trying to go for the ball when i should be, and hogging the court. Let me take them all on!!!

Well, since you asked...

The lack of doubles on television is in part a self-fulfilling prophecy.

First of all, because many of the “doubles specialists” are not among the more popular or highest-ranked players, the networks don’t think they will draw ratings. Of course, they won’t get popular or well known until they are properly promoted, which includes televising matches, but I think everyone can agree that the ATP has failed doubles in that area. (Though recent changes do show promise.)

Also, because doubles is not as popular, many early and mid round matches are scheduled on outer courts, making it difficult for networks to cover matches, even if they wanted to. (Usually, only the primary courts are set up for filming.) Often, they are even scheduled at times that run counter to “show” matches. At the tournaments that I’ve attended, doubles matches are usually treated as filler, scheduled at the end of the morning sessions so as not to interfere with singles matches, or after the marquee singles matches at night, when most people are headed home.

Finally, doubles matches are that much harder to film. As it is, television can’t even properly capture the level of skill involved in singles tennis. With most play filmed by a stationary camera at the end, the length of the court is shortened, and the angles are distorted, so you lose a sense of just how fast the players can move, how hard they can hit the ball, and how sharply they can carve up the court. Play at the net almost always has to be covered in replays, because the stationary camera gives you nothing but a shot of the player’s back and the player themselves often blocks the ball from view. When the same filming techniques are applied to a doubles match, where the players are at the net more often than not, sometimes all four at a time, you wind up with long exchanges that can’t be properly captured real-time, and even replay shots from a camera at the net are difficult because there are two, three, or four players to focus on, instead of the usual one.

Obviously, there are some easy (and some not so easy) fixes. More doubles matches scheduled for show times on show courts is a start. More promotion of the top doubles teams and more singles players playing doubles will help. Devising new ways to film matches would benefit ALL of tennis. It would be great if those things could happen, and if the names Fyrstenberg and Matkowski were just as recognizable as Roddick and Safin.

I’m just not holding my breath.

I only enjoy Double's as 'Fun' only when my partner is cool.

There are too many Kook's in Tennis as it is; so having to be paired with one and then having them meltdown because:

You made an error
They made an error
The other team got a winner
etc
etc
etc

Is no fun. Tennis is the gladiator sport for me; mano e mano

I think the doubles changes have been really good to be honest...before, I was never that bothered about watching doubles but this week at Nottingham I have actually watched mainly doubles...it is nice to know roughly how long a match will last and the attraction is often in seeing some top singles players double up. There have been some nice matches this week :yeah:

I say show more doubles on ESPN and let Luke Jensen commentate his ass off. He was great during the Australian Open Damn/Paes and Bryan bros final. Really interesting to hear since he knows doubles.

At a lot of tournaments about 65% of the crowd at least will watch what they are given, and don't care what it is that they get. So why not throw in some doubles! There is always going to be space for one doubles match esp now that they have been reduced somewhat, so inbetween the huge singles stars, give the crowd a choice on the bigger courts, and show a doubles match :) Please.

I love doubles, but my interest goes out the window when someone I'm not interested in playing, is on. However, having a favourite who is an awesome doubles player (Bjorkman) has opened my eyes to some other cool teams. The Poles, The czechs, and Jim Thomas. All cool guys. It's great to see guys on a court, with a rapport with each other. They're able to have a bit of fun every now and then, and enjoy it.

Ideal team: Jonas and Max. I couldn't have asked for better. Except, maybe Jarkko just once.

Doubles = Most boring form of tennis for me, even more boring than grasscourt tennis. I would not be sad at all, to see doubles go down the drain.

Doubles has annoyed me alot in the past few weeks, I have been going to tournaments and get very annoyed when I see 2 doubles matches on the maincourts and only a few singles matches! I dont even want to see my favourite players play doubles, because thats how boring I find it. I go home when doubles starts, so its preety dissapointing when they schedule alot of doubles. I wish they would just put all doubles matches on the outside courts, and not make 80% of the fans at tournaments leave because they couldnt care about doubles. It would be alot more enjoyable for the select few who actually enjoy doubles too, being able to watch 3-4 doubles matches in a day. Lets face it, hardly anyone at the tournaments really cares about doubles and thats evident with the tiny crowds at the matches. I am so glad that they dont put doubles matches before the singles matches though, that would be a total crime :tape:

This poor joker just wants either cameltoe or solid groundies, and doubles gives him neither! :D

Not the case, I wouldnt watch doubles if it was wta and the players had no underwear on. But yes, I do prefer to see groundstrokes and longer points to the kind of play doubles produces. You are right though, doubles gives me nothing apart from an early trip home.

Maybe if it was iroda tulyaganova, and Irina Bulykina playing braless that would be enough for me! Of course, that wouldnt be for the tennis reasons.
