Federer's one last hurdle

beating the brain fart

1) Whenever he loses a point he thinks he REALLY should have won, he goes on a multiple game losing streak

2) When he gets a bad call from the chair umpire, he goes on a multiple game losing streak

3) When the opponent steps up his game, Federer takes more than 3-4 games to register this to his game, and sometimes loses games because of that

4) When he gets 1 really magical shot inside the line, he wins the next 3-5 games with ease against his opponent

5) He wins when he prefers the slice backhand and loses when he prefers the regular backhand

Erm, as a long-term fan these things have been obvious to me for nigh-on five years now. I think we're stuck with them.

It's telling that most players on tour lose matches with less resulting fuss by the fans than when Federer loses games, or heaven forbid a set.

He has cut it down drastically since 02 but they are still there and always will be. I just hope he can cut them down some more because his mental lapses are growing.

Oh, I meant tennis fans, not necessarily fans of that player. Sorry, I should have been more clear.

I will be taking a lengthy sabbatical from MTF either way, I've decided.
Is it me or is long getting very short these days

yep..always known secret. One clearly taking advantage of it is Nadal...has the knack of just weathering the Federer storm and then take advantage of that lull.

fed's last hurdle is to win the things he is expected to win but has not delivered yet:

1. balance out the H2H with rafa
2. win FO, MC, and Rome
3. win more than 14 slams
4. win the olympics?

A lot of what you said is true, but his BH has really improved over the past few years and he rarely has any matches even on grass now where he goes to the slice for the majority of the points.

Some other things:

-He tends to have problems serving out matches. Against Berdych, he was up 6-0, 5-3, serivng up love games and games to 15 and then when it comes to serving it out, he falters.

-He tends to get broken after he breaks. It happened all week long in Halle.

-If he has break points on his opponent's serve (especially say 15-40 or 0-40) and does not break, he usually comes back and has a poor service game.

Given all this, 15 straight finals, 17 straight SF's, 27 straight QF's...things could be worse. :)
