Wow - what a performance from James Blake! He was reading the Roddick serve SO well and getting a lot of returns back in, playing some smart all-court tennis, and making Roddick's baseline game look distinctly average.

Andy - well back to the bad old days, I'm afraid - stood way too far back and the groundies too toppy and loopy and not with nearly enough bite on them.

When rallies went long, James usually emerged on top.

He played such an assured match, it was a total joy to watch. :worship: It's such a joy to see James doing well on the clay and then here on the grass. His game has come on such a long way in the last year or so. The confidence in it is what was lacking for so long but now he backs himself on the big moments.

Andy... you have to play flatter and more aggressive groundstrokes, mix up the serve more, and serve-volley every now and then to make your opponent work harder. You have to play further forward. It's been the same problem all year. It was all too predictable from you today - if you're getting broken you're in big trouble because your return game these days with the tactics you're employing is not big enough to hurt someone playing with confidence like Blake was.

A really entertaining match and a surprising result.

Well done James Blake for overturning that head to head and posting a terrific win - very well deserved.

:bigcry: Andy

James has a chance to become the #1 American after wimbledon if Andy does not get back in the final. Which is very likely at this point.

Go James :woohoo: Take the title

HUge props to James Blake. He has certainly elevated his game this year. He returned Roddick's serve as well as Federer usually does today and his grounstrokes from both wings were really good. Roddick got almost as many 1st serves in today as he did yesterday, but Blake got them back. Roddick could not win a point on his second serve, as Blake quickly pinned Roddick to his BH. It must feel great to finally get that win over Roddick.

Too bad for Andy, but great job to James to get his first win and especially on grass! I really hope he can win tomorrow -- his first grass court tourney win would be a great preparation for Wimbledon... he hasn't proved himself at all on this surface, but no reason he shouldn't do well on it..

Still puzzled as to why everyone dumbed down their intuition for this match.

Nowadays, grass is nothing but a low-trajectory hardcourt.
To top it off, Andy's results on hard this year have been ridiculous.

Blake after adjusting to clay recently has now adjusted to grass. Is he going to enter the top 5.

Surprised that while Tim Henman and Roger Federer have abandoned serve/volley, AndyRoddick does more serve/volley than he did before.

Of course the reason Andy Roddick has such a high first serve percentage is because he has little variation in his serve direction.

This loss probably has to be the most discouraging of all losses for Roddick. Why? he was getting all his 1st serves in and could not win the match. If all else fails, Roddick can always tell himself that if he serve huge on a fast court, he is just about invincible, but he was clearly not today. This is what Roger usually does to him. It has to be quite troubling.

James always had the game for grass, he just needed to believe it himself. But he's got to stop choking when serving for sets.

Very fun match to watch. The game in which Roddick got broken was quite hilarious, almost as bad as the (in)famous Tursunov one (vs Henman). He also had a conversation with Blake a few games later. :haha:

Roddick had a lot of speed on his serves today. They lacked accuracy and were not intelligently planned and that's what cost him today.

If Blake wins on Sunday, he will be less than a 100 ranking points away from Roddick I believe. Blake has nothing to defend at Wimbledon so even if Roddick makes the final, blake would have to make the 4th round or so to pass him by in the rankings.

They showed on Hawkeye how predictable his serve is becoming though - there were no body serves and they weren't being placed that deep or wide, just fast towards the centre or the sideline

So Blake only has to guess one of two ways and if he knows what Roddick likes to do at a certain point - like down the T on an important point - well it's just a matter of then controlling the ball, because you have a fairly good idea where it's going.

Roddick must mix his serve up more because once it's in a rally, he's looking way too average.

It'll be interesting to see how people react, people have always been content with James being the 2nd best American player (a feat which he accomplished only a year ago), but now that he's left Roddick standing in the dust, let's see what even the so called "patriotic" fans have to say with regard to their good ole boy Andy.

They'll probably mention the fact that Andy has 1 slam to his name (which was stolen from Nalbandian) or something of the sort, yada yada, James must do this first and James must do that first. James has been the 2nd best fast court player behind Roger Federer within the last 12 months.

It's not that Roddick sucks, it's that he's one dimensional and has no idea what to do when it comes to properly constructing a point on any surface, also Roger beating him shitless has a lot to do with this recent decline.

An entertaining match but not a great one by any stretch of the imagination. Andy was crap today. Didn't know what to do when his serves came back. So it really wasn't a great contest. What was great was seeing Jim unload his weapons on the court today. One game he served something like 3 aces. His backhand was working well and his forehand was huge as usual. It certainly is good to see him do so well. Hewitt will be an entirely different beast though. How consistent will Jim be against the ultimate retriever ? We'll have to wait and see...

Props to Blake, his returning of Andy's serve today was superb.

Andy was disappointing, he just didn't seem to have any belief he could win once it was clear Blake was returning his serve. He tried to mix it up in the 2nd by coming to the net more, but until he improves his volleys, coming to the net at this level is suicide. His forehand is no longer a weapon, it probably used to be the best in the game, now I wouldn't put it in the top 10. His serve is the only thing keeping him competitive at the moment, his backhand, returning, volleying etc just aren't good enough.

Well done to James, the future American no. 1. How bad was Andy from the baseline? A lot of players should take note if they meet Andy at Wimbledon. James completely dominated and dictated the rallies. I am so happy he is fulfilling his potential. He has made strides on clay and grass this year, showing he is not just a hardcourt player. Roddick's one-dimensional and boring game has really been found out in the last year or so. Unfortunately he's a spent force.

What a terrific match and an outstanding performance from James Blake. He has said publicly throughout the tournament that grass is his worst surface but he proved to himself today that he can beat anyone on it if he plays well. James returned magnificently and his backhand was devastating. Andy's Davis Cup team mates have now realised how to play him and he is now looking predictable. Roddick's backhand does not belong in the top ten and unless he goes back to the drawing board his ranking is going to sink like a stone. Well done James!

unbelievable returns of serve from Blake today..

Very disappointing from Andy. He has reason to be quite concerned about the state of his game. This match really is a microcosm of what's happened to both these players since last year. James has so much more confidence and is attacking freely, and Andy really seems to be suffering. I can only lament Andy's forehand. But if he needs to drop in the rankings to really take a good look at himself, so be it. Appears that's exactly what's going to happen before too long here. :(

For Blake, fantastic win. He's improved immensely and the confidence he's playing with is key to that success. No reason he shouldn't win tomorrow, though I won't be too disappointed whatever the outcome. :p

In fact the majority of the matches in the past were very close -- usually a single break in each set or a tiebreak -- Andy always won the big points, because he had that confidence of a top player, now James has more confidence than Andy, it's no shock that he would win the big points in a close match. James was bound to win one eventually.

I heard some bits of that exchange Roddick had with Blake during his service game, but I couldn't get all of it.

Does anyone know exactly what both said?

I think the conversation was something along the lines of:

Andy: "You think you could hit a winner?"
James: "First time I guessed wrong"
Andy: "Well you turned around and looked so disappointed"
James: "I haven't guessed wrong all day"

I didn't catch the rest...it was funny though lol. After that I think James offered Andy a water.

Mad props to Andy for once again lightening up the atmosphere. Didn't look like Jim's brother was too pleased with the exchange though. Perhaps he thought it was a ploy to interrupt his brother's rhythm ?:shrug::shrug:
