Queen's: Roddick blows Gonzo away 6-4, 6-3

Gonzo kept pace for the first 8 games, but then he missed some 1st serves and it was lights out. When Roddick gets in that type of serving rhythm, the only player that can beat his is Federer who somehow finds a way to get 1st serves back and distrupt Roddick's mojo.

Roddick served at almost 80%, Gonzo could barely win a point on Roddick's serve, and struggled on his own second serve.

Vintage power tennis from Roddick. This is like a replay of dozens of matches from the past on grass for him.

Now it's his whipping boy Blake who is creeping up on the #1 American spot.

I'd like to see James finally get a win over Andy, but the way Andy was playing today, it's hard to see James winning.

It's only the 2nd semifinal for Andy of the year!

Andy :hatoff: at least someone in top 5 is happy with the green stuff. He was on fire with his serve, more impressive than watchable, grass tennis in a nutshell.

He would've needed the power of 1,000 blogs to have a chance today. :)
Too bad he went up against Roddick today. I would like his chances against just about everyone else in the draw.

I was very impressed with Andy today, it was a good win and hopefully he'll take a lot of confidence from it! :D Shame Gonzalez couldn't play his best though. The semi tomorrow should be a good match.

One thing that helps Roddick in these matchups with Gonzo is that Gonzo's BH is so erratic and most ineffective a lot of the times. Gonzo was winning most of the points on his 1st serve like he always does by hitting his FH in the 3rd shot of the rally. On the second serves, he had to play some BH's and he could not pin Roddick to his Bh. This gave Andy some chances at FH rips which gave him BP's. On the serve, Roddick was just on and there was nothing Gonzo could do as he is not the greatest returner to begin with.

four:love, I don't know if i'd count on that. Andy and James's matches are usually kinda ugly, they're such good friends and have so much respect that they get uptight and make mistakes and stuff lol. it's a very important match for both of them, though, Andy maybe a little moreso.

It was a great match by Roddick. The best I've seen him play for a long time, certainly the best I've seen him play this year. Great serving, Roddick was more or less unbreakable today. His forehand was still not as good as it can be but he barely had to hit any ground strokes when serving so it didn't matter that much.

roddick did alright but with a serve and a forehand like that why dosen't he volley more if he dosen't he's got no chance in beating federer at wimbledon this year. I still reckon it will be a roddick and federer final and last time roddick play hewitt on grass he beat him.
Grrrr roddick is one of those annoying players who's got the firepower for grass except it looks like he's never heard of the word volley.

Roddick is different player on lawn
always has too much pressure for types like Gonzo I think
Gonzo played good to 4-4, but Roddick was not much in danger on own serve

Roddick's anticipation, volleys and Gonzo's shoulder injury were the reasons for the win. Roddick still isn't at his best. He let his friendships interfere with
his health and concentration in Davis Cup matches (he was too satisfied with his practice and barely saved his serves with volleys in the DC grass match vs. Gonzo).

The serve was nothing special. That's why Roddick lost everything for 3 years (he admitted he lost so often with easy errors).
Gonzo just couldn't return 70% of the points.

In the match against qualifier Dancevic, Roddick had 76% 1st serves and could do nothing on serve or return. He was too passive and had very heavy legs and bad torso rotation.

Gonzo should've lost the 1st set 6-2, but Roddick
was complacent with 8 wasted break points. Other times, he had leads and didn't care when Gonzo served easy 40-0 games.
Roddick needs to stop neglecting work on quickness and racket control...and take off muscle weight and serve with better placement.

Federer has nothing to do with Queen's. Try again.

And his volleys im not sure if you agree weren't even that good.
Thanks, Captain Obvious. I can't remember the last time anyone ever mistook Roddick's volleys for Henman's but see, that's not the goal; the goal is to keep improving his net game and slowly but surely, it has been.

Gonzalez was volleying quite well. In the first 8 games of the first set, he hit about half-a-dozen stop volleys. But he never got close to breaking Andy and he played quite poorly after that.

Andy had his moments. He looked better today than against Srichaphan but still too many nervous moments. His BP conversion was again very poor in the first set.

If there was a better than 1/10 chance of him making the shot, I'd agree with you. But when he tries to rip winners from 27 feet behind the baseline it's rather unlikely :p
