If you're an ATP Tour player, What tournaments would you play?

BlakeJamitis

This thread was in the WTA Forum & getting some good (funny) replies so I thought I'd start it over here for the guys. Here is mine...

Aussie Open - of course, I don't need tune-ups - you idiot
Dubai Duty Free - Mo Money
Las Vegas - Come on, anybody that's been to Vegas would play this tourney
STOP ASKING ME TO PLAY INDIAN WELLS - NOT HAPPENING lol

NASDAQ - Gotta play my home state tourney
Monte Carlo - I become the 1st American male to beat all spanish players in route to win!!!
Rome - I'll play it just to go to Rome. This is probably where I lose early for staying out too late partying. The media calls me a 1-hit wonder.
French Open - Another early loss. Met some French groupie chick. We have madd passionate sex all nite. Can't find my strength during the match
Wimbledon - I cry racism when the Wimby officials don't allow me to wear doo-rag & shorts hanging off my butt

Los Angeles - I just love this city. Can't seem to find Halle
Washington - Another city I love. All the blackness causes another 1st round loss
Canada - Refocused & rejuvenated, I hire John McEnroe as coach. My game is back.

US Open - Call me a slam winner baby - defeating Federer in the final. I have Mcenroe send Mirka flowers, candy, chocolate, pictures of me shirtless, etc. throughout the match. Federer gets furious & loses focus.

Beijing - Gotta show some love to Yao Ming's people.

Madrid - I play this tourney before leaving to go on tour with Beyonce. I "comfort" her to help her endure the break-up with Jay-Z.

Tour threatens to fine me if I don't return, but I hire Jesse Jackson & Al Sharpton to cry foul & turn it into a international crime against humanity. lol

Masters Cup - At the last minute, I decide to play this tourney. No longer need to comfort Beyonce because Serena has finally agreed to go out with me. My year is a dream!!!

I would play a lot on grass i think, don't really know.

Depends on what my ranking would be. If we're talking about top 20 here:

- Doha (good $$$)
- Aussie Open
- The Latin clay swing (close to home :p )
- IW and Miami
- Monte Carlo, Rome and Hamburg
- Estoril (portuguese-speaking atmosphere, good $$$, not a very strong field)
- Roland Garros
- Wimbledon
- The US Open series (I'm a hard-courter, so...)
- Tokyo ($$$)
- Madrid
- St. Petersburg (pays well, weak field)
- Paris

And Davis Cup, of course. :p

Actually not only, it's just that the tournaments that offer more $$$ are the ones that offer more points as well. ;)

I would be one of the guys ranked around #100 flying around the world every week searching for tournaments where I make it into the main draw:

Chennai
Melbourne
Heilbronn challenger in the 2nd Melbourne week
Zagreb
San Jose
Costa do Sauipe
Las Vegas
Indian Wells Q - going with a bye into 2nd round replacing Kiefer as lucky loser
Miami Q - replacing Kiefer again
Houston
Bermuda challenger
Casablanca
Hamburg (because the Hamburg wild cards always go to German no-hopers)
Roland Garros
Halle (with Wild Card again)
Wimby
Newport
Stuttgart
Umag
Washington
Three weeks of German bundesliga
US Open
Istanbul challenger in the 2nd US Open week
Beijing
Mumbai
Tokyo
and then finally some european indoor challengers to get enough points to make it into the Chennai main draw next january...

If Federer:

Doha
Australian Open
Rotterdam
Dubai
Indian Wells
Miami
Monte Carlo
Rome
Hamburg (if not deep in Rome)
Roland Garros
Queens
Wimbledon
Los Angeles
Toronto
Cincinnati
US Open
Metz
Madrid
Paris
TMC

4 GS, 9 AMS, 6 optionals and TMC = 20 tournaments

If random top 50 player:

Doha
Sydney
Australian Open
Zagreb
Marseille
Rotterdam
Dubai
Indian Wells
Miami
Valencia
Monte Carlo
Barcelona
Estoril
Rome
Hamburg
World Team Championship
Roland Garros
Queens
's-Hertogenbosch (though only if you don't believe you have any chance at Wimbledon)
Wimbledon
Indianapolis
Los Angeles
Washington
Toronto
Cincinnati
New Haven (once again, only if you're not good enough to go deep in US Open)
US Open
Bejing
Bangkok
Tokyo
Vienna
Madrid
Basel
Paris

4 GS, 9 AMS, World Team Championship and 20 regular tournaments = 34 tournaments
Of course you need some rest too, but when you're losing early you don't get tired.

If you were a tennis pro, which 8 events would play without question every season. Events that would be a must in your schedule.
For me, its...

1. Wimbledon
2. Halle
3. TMS Canada
4. US Open
5. TMS Paris
6. TMS Indian Wells
7. Australian Open
8. Tokyo Open

Basically I stay away from clay court events and only play on fast surfaces. I would play a style similar to Michael Llodra.
My favorite court surfaces are ranked in the following order.
1. Indoor Carpet
2. Grass
3. Hard
4. Clay

Snowwy

Pedigree
06-16-2011, 01:19 PM
1 - Doha (January 3)
2 - Australian Open (January 17)
3 - Rotterdam (February 7)
4 - Acapulco (February 21)
5 - Indian Wells (March 5)
6 - Miami (March 23)
7 - Monte Carlo (April 10)
8 - Madrid (May 1)
9 - Rome (May 8)
10 - Roland Garros (May 22)
11 - Halle (June 6)
12 - Wimbledon (June 20)
13 - Atlanta (July 18)
14 - Washington DC (August 1)
15 - Montreal (August 8)
16 - Cincinnati (August 15)
17 - US Open (August 29)
18 - Tokyo (October 3)
19 - Shanghai (October 9)
20 - Valencia (October 30)
21 - Paris (November 7)

If I were at top 20 player, I'd play this schedule. A good number of tournaments in attractive locations with large prize pools. The tournaments are spread out enough that I'd hopefully avoid injury. The one exception is the stretch between Washington DC and the US Open, which would be kind of brutal if I went deep in a lot of those tournaments. But after that I get 3-4 weeks off to rest before Tokyo (and to get adjusted to the time change out there).

Fun game!

It obviously depends on my ranking but, if I was 12 in the world and preferred hard courts and was based in Australia this is what I'd play in 2011:
Brisbane
AO
Memphis
Delray Beach
IW
Miami
Madrid
Rome
RG
Halle
Wimbledon
Washington
Canada
Cincinnati
US Open
Kuala Lumpur
Beijing
Shanghai
Vienna
Basel
Paris

Meets my ATP500 requirements and gives me good return home breaks after Miami and Wimbledon. Plus minimises travel. This leaves me relatively fresh for post US Open where I play a lot to aid my ranking for the coming year.

Since we seem to have about 500 threads lately about MTF posters whining about the schedule, tennis players whining about the schedule, other players whining about those players whining about the schedule, MTF posters whining at tennis players whining about the schedule, MTF posters whining about tennis players whining about other tennis players whining at the schedule....you get my point.

So if you were an ATP top 30 player, then how would you manage your own schedule. Assuming you play all the slams and all 8 mandatory Masters, then what would you do with the rest of your schedule for 500s and 250s?

Here is the official calendar if you need some help
http://www.atpworldtour.com/Tournaments/Event-Calendar.aspx

You can include DC and/or WTF if you want.

RG
Wimbledon
Umag (best tournament of the season, need to make some money)
Moscow (need to make more money)
WTF (will get the ranking i need)
ACC (fans' favourite)

ok... let's see.

Doha (Argentina is not in the hopman cup, so I wanna beat Federer)
AO (I'd probably win it beating Murray in the final 6-2 6-3 6-0)
San Jose (Hardcourt > Clay)
Buenos Aires (Yeah, I won't betray my country like Delpy, I would play San Jose and then BA)
Dubai (Ok. I like to travel)
IW (Retiring vs Nalbandian in the SF, because I want Dave to win the tournament).
Miami (Choking vs Tsonga in the QF)
Davis Cup, singles and doubles, bring it on!, losing 5 games in the 3 matches.
MonteCarlo (I'm not a fag who doesn't play in Monaco)
Madrid (After a deserved rest, I won Madrid beating Nole in the final 6-7(32) 6-0 7-6 (421))
Rome (Lost in the SF vs Murray, that guy knows how to play on clay)
World Team Cup (AR-GEN-TINA!!! AR-GEN-TINA!!!!)
French Open (I defeat Nadal and then choke vs Fed, because he deserves another RG)
Queens (I want that huge trophy)
Wimbledon (1st argentinian to win Wimbledon, beating Federer in the final 0-6 0-6 0-4, first Federer ret)
Sleep until the olympics. Then I choke vs Fed in the final, because he deserves to win the gold.
I fake an injury to escape from Rogers cup, but I apologize to my canadian fans
I choke in 1st round in cincy, I don't care about that tournament
US Open. I won the tournament beating Agassi (Who recieved a WC in the final 7-6 (2) 6-7(45) 6-7(90) 7-6 (1000) 7-6 (5000).
Davis cup!!!!
Tokyo, just to kick Rafito's ass, then I retire. (if it's in the final, good! I won!)
Shanghai (I realised I just won one masters so, I won Shanghai without losing a single game).
Basel (Roger's home. I needed to play there. I choke vs Fed in the final 0-6 0-6).
Paris yeah, why not? I won Paris also, beating Nole in the final 7-5 7-4 (yeah, 7-4).
WTF. Viruzzz, the new London King.
Davis Cup. Argentina won the DC thanks to me.

I'm happy.

EDIT: Also I like you to know that I tell Cincy people that I'm still injured, but then I ask for a Wildcard. They gave it to me, because i'm the n° 1 in the world. And even in that situation, I lost in 1st round. Because, as I said. I don't care about Cincy.

I would play:

Brisbane
Australian Open
San Jose
Memphis
Indian Wells
Miami
Houston
Madrid
Monte Carlo
Rome
French Open
London
Wimbledon
Atlanta
LA
Washington
Montreal
Cincy
US Open
Tokyo
Shanghai
Vienna
Valencia
Paris

That gives me 24 tournaments that I am playing, so that puts me in a similar spot as most players who were healthy all year.

Brisbane
Sydney
AO

Vina Del Mar
Brasil Open
Buenos Aires

Indian Wells
*skip Miami. Go and watch a hockey match somewhere*

Casablanca (Doubles only)
Monte Carlo
Barcelona (Doubles only)
Munich
Madrid
Rome
RG

Halle
's-Hertogenbosch/Eastbourne (Doubles only)
Wimbledon
Newport

Hamburg
Gstaad - Would only play either if in need of points and fully fit.

Washington
Rogers Cup

USO

Beijing
Shanghai
Valencia
Paris

That's a maximum of 25 tour events in singles. Considering early exits. Rabat, Marakech, Rome, Nottingham, Seville and Loughborough challangers would all be on the cards. Failing qualification for the WTF I'd also consider finishing the year at the Montevideo challanger. Taking a few friends, enjoying some football and having fun. Or just going home.

If I had no talent, I'd play every obscure event possible and secure top 5 every season, just like Andy Murray :smoke:
