Well done Rogi, still having a hard time adjusting returning serve on grass.

Richie  he played brilliantly shame they had to meet so early

Sounds like a competitive match. Did anyone here see it?

Close match and exciting. Gasquet did well and it good on grass, but Federer is not yet at his best on grass, especially regarding his play from the basline; you could see this in some situations and he himself also knows it when you saw his reaction after some points.

Rogi:woohoo: I guess it's good to have a very tough match early in the grass season, he must be getting some rhythm now:yeah: I have to admitt I was very afraid after Rogi wasted 2 mps in the second set, we all know what happened in Monte Carlo last year.. anyways keep up the good play Rogi:bounce:!!!

What a match!!!!!

Can anyone rememger last year Halle first round between Roger and Soderling?

This match gave me the same feeling to that one.

Richie  he played brilliantly shame they had to meet so earlySo how did Roger look today. Of course no coverage of Halle (or Queens) here in the USA. I'm so glad I have the tennis channel so I can see 1999 davis cup tie between USA and GBR.

Meetingn a quality opponent like Gasquet early on is very good practice though. I feel bad they had to meet so early esp if Ritchie was playing well.

Not bad but not sharp as he can be on grass, his timing on returns is still late. Understandable since he just got back from clay. And like Neely said, he seems a little unsure about when to attack from the baseline, and when to come in. Hopefully that will pick up with more matches. Who does he play next?

I think this might be Roger's toughest match of the tournament -- perhaps Safin will be tough as well, if he's getting his act together.

I hope the closeness gives Richard confidence, and he can defend his title in Nottingham!

Thank goodness this wasn't clay. Nevertheless, Richie is pretty at home on grass. That backhand must be a beauty on grass.

Whatever doesn't kill you only makes you stronger. If he is feeling ok physically he should be able to pick it up in his next match and he knows he needs to regardless of who he plays!

At least Richie gave it a shot :D When was the last time Roger was pushed this hard on grass? By Safin in last years final? Interestingly enough, this scoreline is nearly identical to his first round match with Soderling last year/

I'v seen only a part of the match (first set and a half of the second) and it was suprising to see how much Federer resembled his RG finals weakneses - suddenly playing an awfull game and somewhat loosing will to play afterwards. I thought this was due to Nadal in RG finals but I am not sure now It seems he has some bad streak

Congrats Fed. :yeah:

I had the feeling Richard could do well today... and I am happy to see that was a close match. Now, Richard only needs some luck to have a good draw in the coming tournaments.
:help: Please, no more Nalby or Fed in a second round!!!

Good job Roger. He needs this tournament to refind his touch on grass, and above all, regain his confidence from the RG loss...

I believe he will pick up his game in the next rounds.

lucashg
06-15-2006, 05:37 PM
Well done, both of them. Congrats Roger for winning and hopefully that has given him enough match practice on grass to toughen up his game for the next rounds, and even if it didn't, Halle is just for preparation anyway, and it's normal that he's playing way below his best.

As for Richard, he seems to finally be getting his game back together, I just hope he stays away from Roger, David, Mario and some other big names in Wimbledon, I think he could do well given a favorable draw, he's got the goods for grass. Good luck in defending Nottingham, Richard!

Good luck next round, Roger!

There was no chance of Gasquet getting bagelled. Even if Fed's timing is on, he won't bagel Gasquet unless Gasquet gives up.

The problem is that he likes to tank matches. We don't even have to go that far back. Just look at the RG match against Nalby. :o

Sad, but true. He's got to get over that non-sense. It's obvious he can get good results (wins, close matches) once he's willing to fight. I'm obviously not counting his various injuries, but his selective fighting spirit is frustrating! :o

Hopefully we'll see more of hungry Richard from now on. :p

That may not be a bad thing. He needs to lose more often in these smaller tournaments to make him hungrier for the big ones. Of course, that didn't work out during the clay season so...

Rich . Awesome fight though, losing to Roger 6-4 in the 3rd on his beloved grass is really good. Hopefully this is a sign of some great things to come in the future, but I hope you boost up your ranking and fast as to avoid these really shitty draws he's been getting after coming off his injury.

If he works hard on his fitness and learns to use his wide arsenal of shots properly , he can become the Achilles heel for the entire tour.

well when he doesn t have any injury,it's a lot easier obviously :)

great match, well done to Roger for winning it,he showed again he was though mentally.
well done Richie too :)
now i just hope you'll stay injury free for a long period and show us that you are way better than what your current ranking would suggest.

If he fixes his head, Richard will be to the tour what Fed was in 2003-2005

i can t see him(or any player to be fair) being as dominant as Roger but i certainly think he can be a huge threat for Roger in fast surfaces in the future.

I actually don't mind if Gasquet takes over. I support him whenever he isn't playing Fed. Somebody has to, but unless Gasquet posts such results consistently, it is a little premature to say that he will become Roger's Achilles heel.
