Hi guys :wavey: Andy, Cris and I thought it will be a great idea to start a thread about langage since we are all so international LOL

And since we like learning new stuff we thought it will be great to exchange about langage here. Like if we need to know something in another langage we can ask our questions here! I know a lot of Safinettes and Safinous are langage genious so I'm shure we will have all our questions answer here !

Ok have fun!

BTW english peoples does international takes a ``s`` in the thread title?

That's excellent Allusion you'll be able to help us with our English!

I'm shure Vass can give you some tips with russian

I was talking about the thread title....do you say: langage thread for all internationals Safinettes and Safinous or for all international Safinettes and Safinous? Sorry if my question was a bit confusing LOL

Quel compositeur préfères-tu jouer?...

J'adore écouter Chopin

Nocturne for piano No 9
Nocturne in G minor
Piano concerto # 1 in E minor, Op. 11
Marche funèbre
Polonaise

MisterQ
01-21-2004, 09:44 PM
J'adore Chopin, Catsou!

MisterQ
01-21-2004, 11:54 PM
Martha Argerich! :yeah: Elle joue avec feu!

J'aime beaucoup Vladimir Horowitz, Glenn Gould, Yevgeny Kissin, Richard Goode, Sviatoslav Richter...

Impressive! :D what do you play?

Piano! And I compose too. :)

do you play any instruments (or sing)?

Kiara
02-28-2004, 08:09 PM
I sing, but Im frequently asked not to ;)
and I used to play the piano, I still play from time to time, by ear , I can't read music...I used to be able to as the parental units forced me to take piano lessons from ages 6-12 but I never learned how to *properly* read music.
In the beginning, I had difficulty reading the notes so my teacher used to write them out for me (like "B-Sharp, "G-Flat" and so on and so forth ) I then used to memorize the keys on the piano and play by memory(it was a long, arduous process and to simply learn how to read music would have been quicker/easier. :o )When it came to exams sight-reading was a nightmare i could never do it.
I wish I had learned how to do it the right way, put sheet music in front of me and my mind will just draw a blank, but I have alot of respect for people who can play the piano, since I struggled with it immensely.
I CAN however play the guitar, Im self taught and have been playing since i was 14, again only by ear.

MisterQ
02-28-2004, 08:25 PM
I have noticed that the guitar and piano use very different mindsets, and that people who take easily to one frequently struggle with the other. I, for example, took to the piano easily but have no aptitude for the guitar whatsoever. interesting...

Don't knock yourself for playing by ear. It's a great skill, and a part of the oral/aural tradition of music which has been weakened by the invention of notation.

Hey, I suggest you look for Pimsleur Russian cds/mp3s - I think you can download some if you search your favourite *illegal* p2p network. Depending on how much Russian you already know, you can start at the beginner levels or the higher ones. It's really good for getting to know the language and the right accents.

I think this thread is fantastic - I wonder why it died. It should I learned some French and German in high school and I'm surprised that I could follow most of what was said. I'm really interested in learning a number of languages, but I'm not very fluent in any of the other languages I know!

There are many ways to describe Marat's hair state in Russian. Literal tranlsation of some of them:

Explosion on a spaghetti factory
I fell from a truck and had to break with my head
Come to my cave, we'll stay scaring off mammoths.

and finally my personal favourite:

Kiss me at run, I am standing behind a tree

So that's pretty much all the Russian versions ROTFL

u l r i ke

"u" is pronounced as the u in Uma ;)
"lr" just an l and then an r
"i" is like the sound in keep, peep (but not as stretched out) or in the french word 'pire'
"ke" is pronounced as the first two letters of 'cup'

Based on what it sounds like in my ears ;) Like the 'i' in safin is represented by a letter which is like an N in the mirror (I didn't mean the reversed sound of an N, I meant the way it's written) ;)
N И
R Я

It's a weirdly written language for foreigners, we have separate letters for sounds, which are written with 2 letters in Latin

like ya = я
yu = Ю

There is a total of 33 letters in the alphabet so it's a bit complicated LOL

It's more about pronouncation difficulties. If you know alphabet and know how to pronounce letters you don't have to guess how to read a word.

I believe the best way is to enroll in a class  At least that way you can hear it from someone that does it the right way plus they can provide you with exercises and correct you. The problem is that all language classes start in september. I'll have to wait until next year :p
I did learn some italian with cd-rom though but Italian is not so difficult. My parents are learning it now and sometimes they write little texts for their class and I can translate it perfectly even without one lesson.
I think the biggest problem is speaking the language. I have this problem with french. I understand quite a lot, watching french tv is no problem for me but yet in real life I have never really had a conversation in french (apart from in highschool). Same for english.

Good classes with native speakers teachers were too expensive for me. The ones I could afford  I had a suspicion sometimes that I know english better than teacher. And anyway classes help for the short period of time. I forget everything without practice.

I don't think it's too expensive. And since it's a credited school I'm pretty sure it's decent quality.

I had that problem already in the pharmacy with both french and english
A man came to buy some cream for his baby for redness of the skin (from diapers) and altough I understood perfectly what he was saying I felt like a complete :retard: because all that came out of my mouth was "Oh yes, we have something *shows tube* ok? Three euros and 50 cent" :o :o

Second situation was a turkish couple explaining in french that their baby was constipated and they wanted something to fix it. I was then supposed to ask for the baby's age, come up with glycerine suppositories and say that they had to cut them in half because the dose would otherwise be too strong for such a small baby. Oh. My. God. And the worst thing was that my 'boss' was in the back listening to my clumsy conversation. Luckily his mother who studied french came to rescue me.

Ulrike, you want to take English classes?

Btw, your written English is absolutely great girls, I used to teach Russian at school as some of you might know and my motto is - most important is to make yourself understood and understand what the other person wants to say, some grammar mistakes are not bad if it's not some official written text or smth.
