Nadal Beats Fish 7-6 (1), 6-1 :)

Very surprising result, I had expected nadal to rinse mardy in both sets. Although, fish provided no danger to nadal during the first set and nadal had a cakewalk during the tiebreak.

A nice easy opening match for nadal on grass, :yeah: Lets hope he can go alot further.

What's up with the aces?!?

He hit three back-to-back aces in the second set and levelled it to 40-40 with another ace on Fish's serve (in the 5th game of the second set)!

I'm really REALLY trying not to expect too much from Nadal on grass. I don't want to get my hopes up too much, and I'm trying to tell myself, "the important thing is he gets grass practice..." -- so I don't get disappointed if ever he loses out to the more adept grasscourt players. But he's not making it easy. :)

Fish can play better and Nadal played immediately in his first match on grass after the long clay season better than I expected.

Overall, an easy result for Rafa, congrats! :yeah:
Fish could hardly do anything to make it difficult for Nadal and he was passed by Nadal at will at the net most of the times.

You could see Nadal wanted to play and with this great attitude I think Nadal will surprise many people :)

Yes, I have always thought nadal will post greater results than last year. So it will be no surprise for me, hes gonna do well this year for sure! He was serving 130+ today, and varying it. Its nice to see when he wants to, he can use the serve as a weapon and not just an into into the point.

surprise? me, no... expect him to win some matches here....

in the end, he is the world no.2... people seem to underestitmate him....

but honestly, this is his first grass match 3 days after winning RG...

so well done :yeah:

his plan was to play a double match first to get some practice...

and he didnt need to... ha!

if he can get into the QF and face hewitt, that will be interesting....

That was actually very good from Rafa... Very good serving, nice volleys, good returns...he only slipped and fell once. :p Of course Fish's first serve percentage in the second set helped a lot, but still - a straight sets win is a very nice surprise from Rafa. Even the ES commentators were mightily impressed for once.

I reckon if he keeps serving this well, he actually has a chance of winning two matches in a row. :D

hey hey, look at federer in his 1st grass court match today, won 7-6 6-2 against rohan bopanna (who the hell is this guy??)...

they just need time to adjust.

my point is, nadal's score is hardly embarassing....

It would have been very interesting to see how Nadal would have dealt with Bopanna in the first set today. I watched both matches and Bopanna served very well in this set (high percentage, service winners en masse, booming serves) and expect the first game he gave Federer no chance to break his serve until he double-faulted at 4-4 in the tiebreak to give away the only and deciding mini-break. There was a huge difference between Bopanna's serving performance and Fish's today.

I'm serious. For a seasoned player like Fish, getting a bread-stick from Nadal on grass is indeed embarrassing. Not the loss itself, but the way he lost it.

By the way , with this win Nadal has got his best streak of straight matches won in his career , 25 matches . Last year he won 24 until he lost to Waske.

Nadal adapted pretty well- his lefty serve had a lot of power and accuracy behind it and whenever Fish missed a first serve you knew Nadal would eat him in the rallies. Good start :)

I must say I was impressed about Nadal's performance today. But that's probably only 'cause I've heard so much about him sucking on grass and not having any chance, I suppose. It'll be interesting to see how he advances. I hope he does well, of course.

The speed gun at Queens has a bit of a reputation for adding quite a few mph on a serve :p

Who knows, maybe its more accurate :p And the other tournaments speed guns arent accurate enough! But I am sure there will be an increase in speed on grass anyway, so that explains it! I doubt players are going to wasting their output on 140mph serves on clay

I really thought nadal was going to lose. He played very well but he still looked very unconfident and shaky. I love how hed go to the volley and concentrate on what he'll do next! He looks like hes studying the point. I hope he gets far into this tournament and if he beats henman in the semis (if he gets there) then tennis has got something very special

Overall I thought it was a remarkably assured performance considering the quick turnaround from clay and the lack of grass play in the last 12 months.

The serve gained him a lot of cheap points, the groundstroke timing was very nice - lots of great passes on the forehand and backhand wings, the odd serve-volley, some nice little dinks at the net. He didn't seem rushed by the speed off the court. His movement on the grass was excellent as was his balance - he only slipped the one time.

I was very impressed.

The only concern I did have was that Fish totally failed to employ slice against Nadal, so we have yet to see how Rafa can handle the ball when it really digs in low into the grass off the sliced backhand. That may yet pose him some problems.

But all in all it was a match that made a lot of people, including all the commentators, sit up and take notice - they rather expected him to lose to the guy who's won a challenger event on grass the week before. I don't think they're seeing him winning this week but they're seeing a will to do well on the surface and him starting to make the necessary adaptations to do that.

So I thought it was great - I really enjoyed watching him and I think he can take Verdasco - the prospect of a Hewitt rematch in the QFs is intriguing.

Corey Feldman

as i expected..
Nadal wont be easy to defeat on grass as some might think.

but today, Fish could barely return the lefty serve of rafa, he was terrible and hit about 100 shots into the top of the net.
