According to Clarín, it's not a strain and he'll be able to play in Wimbledon. It's not official yet, but it's good news. :)

Nalbandian hopeful for Wimbledon

World number three David Nalbandian is optimistic that he will be fit for Wimbledon despite being forced to retire injured from the French Open.

The 24-year-old Argentine injured his fragile abdominal muscle and was forced to quit against Roger Federer in their semi-final at Roland Garros on Friday.

But he said on Wednesday: "I feel good - it was a strain and not a tear.

"I believe that I'm going to arrive in Wimbledon in perfect condition and that's important."

The 2002 Wimbledon runner-up returned to Argentina to recover after his 3-6 6-4 5-2 loss to the world number one in Paris.

He said: "I'm treating it with physiotherapy and work in the gym.

"I'm not playing at the moment as a precautionary measure even if the only thing that bothers me is when I serve."

Hola Mr. SK
06-15-2006, 03:42 PM
thanks for the info, guys.
Hope his fitness comes to 100% when playing in Wimbledon. If not, his serve will definitely be affected. It's on grass, so serve counts a lot more. I don't see him go deep into the draw without a decent serve.

VamOOOOooooOOOOoooOOOoooOOoooS David!!!! :rocker2:

Please tell me -Is it official that nalbandian will play Wimbledon?

Let me guess you want to know whether Ljubo will get a Top 4 seeding, thereby avoiding Federer until the semis at least? Or something along those lines?
Nalbo will confirm in the next few days whether or not he will play Wimbledon, after he starts practising his serve.

What's it to you? Like gooner said, you just want to see if Ljubo will get seeded opposite Roger, but what's going to really happen, is that he'll run into one of these other grass-court geniuses and get his ass swept off the court. Then there's the matter of who becomes #3 in the world, right? If David does play Wimbledon-which there is probably a 95% certainty-that will certainly give Ljubo a slim chance of achieving that again.

I'm curious: Why are you over here asking us when you could be over in GM? This forum is not for you. Read again: a message board for fans of David Nalbandian. You're not a fan, so goodbye to you.

Nalbandian won't be too long #3.And why I can't ask anything? And why you think that I want Nalbandian to withdraw?Let me know is nalbandian playing Wimbledon or not! If he won't play he will lose 250 points in entry ranking.Maybe Ivan will not do well on grass in Wimby. But he will in US OPEN and that's his chance to surpass (maybe bad spell) Nalbandian in rankings. And he will get his revenge in Shangai, because he lost to Nalbandian there last year. But Ivan beat Nalbandian in Miami 6-1 6-2. And in Dc 3-0 in sets.So :) :) :)

Why don't you read the thread in its entirety? No one in this fan message board is interested in starting a "war" with Ljubo fans. If you want to do that, do it somewhere else.

Whether David is or is not #3 when Wimbledon is over, remains to be seen.
You never mention why this is so important to you-other than you want to see Ivan be the #4 seed. If he's the #5 seed, then chances are, he'll be seeded to meet Andy Roddick in the quarters, then maybe Rafa Nadal or James Blake in the semis, so it's really not like Ivan is getting a great deal out of the whole thing.

Read me now: There is a nearly 100% certainty that David will show at Wimbledon. When he does, then Ivan is #5 seed. Learn to like it. And get the hell off this forum. It's obvious that you're not a fan, so whatever use you have for the information presented therein is probably not good. So, GOODBYE!!!

A message to croman: It would be nice if you would just leave this message board. It was much more peaceful without the likes of you around here. All you want to do is start trouble where there is none. It's obvious you're not a fan (which this forum is devoted to), so why are you here? Answer this all-important question. If you can't, then the best thing you can do for all of us is to confine your comments for and about David to GM.

And by the way: you need to learn how to communicate in English better. Asking someone to please tell you something is like bossing them around. Check yourself on that, 'K?

Ok, I just heard on tv that David had tickets to see the first match of the World Cup, but since he got injured while playing Roger he had to come back to Bs As and rest. So now he asked to some players friends to get him tickets for the match against Holland, which will be played on wednesday, but no one has gotten him one. It's all sold out, however a friend of his has one and won't be able to make it, and gave him his. So David will go to see the match by himself and then will go to Wimbledon to play the tournament ;)

Don't you hate trolls? Really....don't you? I often wonder why someone who is not a fan comes over just to troll. We David fans pride ourselves on staying gossip and controversy-free most of the time; however, we must acknowledge that certain elements of the scum population want to call attention to their sexual and emotional deficiencies. Isn't that a damn shame? I mean, really....

If we converse amongst ourselves, David fans, then people who do not belong here will have no choice but to leave and find some other player's fans to pick on for awhile. My suggestion to the troll population that has been here of late is this: if you're not a fan, and your sole purpose is to disrupt the normal activity of this board, then you're fighting a losing battle, for soon you will find yourself touching the keyboard, and no letters will appear on the screen. And it's highly discouraged that you root for another player on this forum. The next time, when you come on here, introduce yourself as a fan and not a troll, and you may be taken much more seriously. Until then, see ya, wouldn't want to be ya.

Admit it-for your peace of mind anyway.

If anything, Ivan was the one who started the war of words, which David was mature enough not to get caught up in. So, croman...whatever your purpose is, clearly it's not working.

Perhaps Croman has been haunted by the understanding of being in love with David, and thus felt the need to repel and demonstrate to US his hatred towards Nalby so that above all else, he himself can be convinced otherwise of his own ineffable yearnings.

What, are WE supposed to hate him too? It's laughable to think that someone can demonstrate hatred of a player on his own message board. It's like going to someone's house, taking four helpings of food, and declaring the meal nasty. Doesn't make sense.

Mirnyi is mentioning David in his blog, it sounds like he still can't serve properly, I hope he's just being very cautious:
"At that same time David Nalbandian came by and offered a little hit around as he just decided to visit the club for a nice afternoon and some photo shoot with his sponsors, and of course that became a very useful thing for me to do since I needed a little warm up before my match against Tommy Haas.
At the end of a hit with David he looked very much like my coach. When I asked him to serve some balls to me he reminded me of his French Open injury (pulled abdominal muscle) and offered to serve from half court. This looked very strange to have him do that to me for about 5-6 minutes. So, it's all your fault, coach David N, that in over two hours I still didn't make enough returns to break Tommy's serve."

2006 FIFA WORLD CUP: ‘I really suffered watching it’
/noticias.info/ by FIFAworldcup.com

David Nalbandian, tennis pro

Argentina’s David Nalbandian is one of the world’s leading tennis players and currently lies third in the ATP rankings, a career high. He took up the game at the age of five and would go on to win the 1998 Junior US Open, defeating none other than Switzerland’s Roger Federer in the final, and lifting the Junior Wimbledon doubles title the following year.

After turning professional in 2000, Nalbandian broke into the top 50 for the first time the following year, although it was not until 2002 that his career really took off, reaching the final of Wimbledon, where he lost to Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt, and the semi-finals of the US Open. He did manage to win two tournaments that year, and ended it as the sport’s highest-ranked South American. In 2005 he lifted the Tennis Masters Cup, the biggest win of his career to date.

Read on as Nalbandian offers FIFAworldcup.com his analysis of the Albiceleste’s victory over Mexico in the last 16 of the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™.

Mr Nalbandian, what did you think of the game?
Despite the fact that it was as tough as expected, I really suffered. I almost got cramps just watching it. Mexico played really well and that made it difficult for us to get hold of the ball. There were times when I didn’t like the way we played, and we made lots of mistakes. But that’s natural I suppose when you’re nervous or when tiredness creeps in. Argentina have played much better than that for sure.

Do you think Jose Pekerman’s changes were the key to the game?
Substitutions are very tactical things and I’m not in a position to say whether they were good or bad. I got the feeling, though, that they turned out to be good decisions because as soon as he made the changes we started seeing a little bit more of the ball.

Which Argentina players stood out for you?
There were a few … Maxi Rodriguez for sure. (Roberto) Ayala has played really well in all the games. Roberto El Pato Abbondanzieri was very secure, didn’t take any risks and commanded the penalty area. (Javier) Mascherano was fairly quiet to begin with but got into the game more and more. As for (Lionel) Messi, he really helped the team get control of the ball and won a few free-kicks, which helped the team regain their rhythm. I’m a River Plate fan, but when Argentina play, I get behind all the guys.

How do you see the game against Germany?
Very, very difficult. They played so well against Sweden, and there’s no doubt it’s going to be tough. We suffered a lot against Mexico so you can only imagine what it’s going to be like against the Germans. I’m just hoping to make progress at Wimbledon and be able to watch them in action between my games. And I really don’t mind how they win or how much they win by – just so long as they win.

Do you have a message for the Argentina players?
Just for them to keep giving it their all because the entire country is right behind them.

Nice interview!!!
I was working during the Argentina-Mexico match, and I can assure you, I suffered a LOT cause I couldn't scream, I had to stay quiet next to Mexicans and Brazilians cheering against Argentina. After the match I had a headache, was all red, and I can totally relate to David's cramps, cause I had them too! LOL
Anyway, I hope David realises all of us suffer from the same thing everytime he's playing a match! don't make us suffer anymore, and try to win your next match!
Vamos David!!!!

 Jime I know what you mean, I also suffered a lot today, with my country's match. Gladly I wasn't working, and I could scream all that I wanted. But in the end, I lost my voice. Same happened when we played Mexico. :o :rolls:

Now I don't want to suffer tomorow, when David plays, I had my share of that today. So yeah, please Davheed make it easy on us!

Yeah, they played together. They have won the longest match ever played. It was in the DC 2002 against Russia. They beat Safin and Kafelnovov in 5 sets
Longest match ever played? How much did it last?

It's hardly rained all summer in London, and yet when Wimbledon comes there's rain. :(
I'll be surprised if Nalbo finishes his match today, and that's even if he actually gets on court.

The BBC were showing last year's match between Nalbo and Murray during the rain delay.
I was watching it thinking has it really been a year since that match because he played some awful tennis.

I was watching it thinking has it really been a year since that match because he played some awful tennis. :lol:Yeah, when he got a little tight, he would stone backhands into the net on almost every rally.

Once the 2005 TMC went underway, he almost over-night grew the most comfortable baseline game on tour. Had it ever since.

Well first thing is that his serve was fine. He didin't have any problems with it, but lets see how his serve holds up through the later rounds if he gets there.
He played really well and was always in control. His returns and his forehand were great. As usual he kept a good length on his groundstrokes and all in all a good performance.

Dave's making the Centre Court his home:

Centre Court 1.00 pm Start
1 Ladies' Singles - 1st Rnd.
Bethanie Mattek (USA) vs Venus Williams (USA)[6]
2 Gentlemen's Singles - 2nd Rnd.
David Nalbandian (ARG)[4] vs Arnaud Clement (FRA)
3 Ladies' Singles - 2nd Rnd.
Viktoria Kutuzova (UKR) vs Kim Clijsters (BEL)[2]
4 Gentlemen's Singles - 2nd Rnd.
Roger Federer (SUI)[1] vs Tim Henman (GBR)

Clement is a tricky if somewhat underpowered guy who shouldn't be that much of a threat on grass. I don't remember what sort of results Nalbie usually racks up against these kinds of players but right now I'm feeling quite confident (which is most unusual for early Slam rounds).

We'll see.

David's quotes:
"I'm not at 100% yet because of the injury, so I'm not feeling confortable yet. Before this tournament I only played one exhibition match, trying to serve, and the next day I was feeling pain; that generated doubts in me and bit of fear in some moments. But it didn't bother me at all, though I didn't forced the serve much"
"Será otro partido, él juega más de fondo. Si estoy bien, podré pasar. Siento que cada vez que vengo a Wimbledon juego buen tenis. Creo que tengo chance de llegar a las rondas finales"
"It will be another match with clement, he plays more from the baseline. If I'm fine, I'll be able to win. I feel that everytime I come to Wimbledon I play good tennis, I think I have a chance of getting into the final rounds"

Oh crap he lost. Did he really play that bad to only break 1 in 19???

It wasn't pretty :banghead: :banghead: and yes for the most part he did play that badly - made many errors on break points - not at all like David

His movement on the court was really poor; he was not getting down to shots, not reacting at all to some of Verdasco's shots and just looked really out of it. Wonder if his abs injury was bothering him again or something with the ankle that was taped earlier. But his serve actually looked good today - and much better than anything else (until the last set when everything was awful).

Credit to Verdasco who seized the moment but what a bummer for David.

I was not expecting much from him at Wimbledon this year with no grass court practice before the tournament but when he looked so sharp in his first two matches I got my hopes up - should have known better.

Well on to the hard courts and the US Open. World Cup will be over then and maybe David can concenrate on his game and fully recovering from injury.

Good Luck in the US hard court season. A US Open final would be nice.

Well I've just come back from Wimbledon. I wasn't sure if I was going to go today, but when I saw Nalbo's match on Court 13 last night I decided why not.
I arrived at Wimbledon at 7am with a friend and queued for over 3 hours just to get my ground pass.
As soon as the gates opened we went straight to Court 13 to get some seats. All seats were taken in minutes, and we had to wait an hour before the players got onto court. It was absolutely baking hot and I fried under the sun.
Anyway onto the match.

How Nalbo didin't win that first set I'll never know. He had BP's in virtually every Verdasco service game in that first set. But he blew all of them. It wasn't as if Verdasco served bombs on every BP; Nalbo had alot of looks on 2nd serves and hit poor returns by his standards. There was an Argentine couple sitting next to us and they said just before the TB that Nalbo was going to lose it because of all the missed chances. They were right. It was a very good TB with some great tennis, but Verdasco was more clinical and deserved it.

He went a break down early in the 2nd set, but broke back a few games later. The longer the match went on the more confident Verdasco became, and he began to overpower Nalbo especially with his FH which was a devastating shot. There was this annoying lady a few rows above me who shouted with joy after every winning Verdasco point from a Nalbo error, especially when Nalbo made DF's. I just wanted to tell her to shut up. The second set TB was like the first with good tennis from both players. I remember him saving a set point at 6-5 after a long point where Verdasco was hammering FH after FH, and Nalbo used his great defensive skills to win it. I thought he was going to win the set there. But once again Verdasco played the big points better and was just too good.

In the 3rd set Nalbo had Verdasco at 0-40 in the first game, and I felt he had to break there to have any chance of a comeback. Surprise surprise he didin't break, and the match began to slip away rapidly. He tanked a bit towards the end which was disappointing but overall Verdasco deserved it because he took his chances and Nalbo didin't.

After the match I watched parts of a few doubles matches on the outside courts and saw players like Ljubicic, Robredo and Ferrer which was nice. Just one more thing which is totally random. I also saw Schiavone and she had one annoying scream when she plays.

Yeah the queues at Wimbledon are very very long. I had to get there very early just to get a seat for that first match.
I was disappointed not to see him win, but Verdasco was better. You win some, you lose some eh. :(

One more thing, I just saw John McEnroe give his thoughts on today's match. He said that he was disappointed with Nalbo's attitude on court today, and it was clear he had the footy on his mind. He was also disappointed to see him go out because he views Nalbo as the second best all-round player in the men's game.

I know about the famous Wimbledon queues, but I don't think I would ever wait for 3 hours just to have a seat. I'm not that patient.

Even though I'm not John Mac's number one fan, I have to agree with him. I'm not sure if David is the second best all-round player, but I am very sure that he is one of the best in the ranking. But he lacks something, I don't know if it's motivation, I don't know. And of course a Slam is still missing.

Today was just a bad day for him. But he can take a lesson from this : NEVER EVER step on a Tennis court, if Tennis is not what you have in mind. It's useless, really.

what an interview

D. Nalbandian Interview - Day 5
Friday, 30 June, 2006

Q. You must be bitterly disappointed with that?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: Yeah. I didn't play good. I couldn't return any serve. I miss a lot of chances. That's part of the game.

Q. You had a lot of breakpoints in the opening set. You didn't manage to convert them. What do you think went wrong?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: Well, I couldn't return most of the match. I mean, not even in the first set. Second, as well and third as well.

I think if I broke once in the first set, everything will change. But nothing, nothing happened.

Q. Were you impressed by Verdasco's performance?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: He play okay. He don't play great. I just lose by myself.

Q. So you think you lost it as opposed to he won the game?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: (Nodding).

Q. You had a racquet warning. You appeared to lose your temper a bit in the first set. What was going through your mind at that point?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: Nothing.

Q. I don't know if this has been asked. You wanted to watch the football this afternoon?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: Yeah.

Q. Obviously, now you're out, you can watch it. Was that a decision, do you think, to change around the way you were going to play?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: What? What do you mean? I didn't understand.

Q. Is that right, that you had the match moved so you could watch the football this afternoon?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: Yeah, and?

Q. No, I just thought if that hampered your preparations at all.

DAVID NALBANDIAN: Oh, no.

Q. Are you a big football fan?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: Yeah, normal.

Q. You watch a lot of football?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: Normal.

Q. Which is what? What is 'normal,' I mean?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: Not every single matches, but some matches I watch it.

Q. Do you think Argentina can win the World Cup?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: I think so, yeah. Yeah.

Q. Is that something you've done before, tried to get sort of your matches around football matches, is that something that you've done before?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: No. I never play a match before I mean between the World Cup.

Q. But they were okay to let you do that, they were fine with that, they were cool?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: Yeah.

Yep he lacks that something extra. Maybe its the motivation or the mental capability because he does have the game. Most people say its the serve, but today he served very well. In fact he's served well in all of his matches at Wimbledon. So I don't buy the theory that his serve is too weak. Many players win tourneys by not having great serves.

I'm even more disappointed that he was so preoccupied with the footy. I mean its Wimbledon, a GS for crying out loud.
On Tuesday they put Rafa's 1st round match as the last match on the show court. Now he's a mad footy fan but he missed alot of the France v Spain match because of his match. Maybe I'm being harsh but there's an example of the difference between Nalbo and Rafa, and why Rafa is the champion that he is.

You're not being harsh, that is the true. Rafael has two slams, is nr 2 in the world, because of something called work. He works hard, and puts Tennis first, all the time.

That's the diference, and will always be if David doesn't change something.
I hate him for not caring sometimes. :(

Yeah. I wouldn't call it hate, just sheer frustration. He's like Safin in that respect; when he puts his mind into it he can do anything but when he sucks he really sucks. Let's put it into perspective; he's had a very good and consistent year overall. He had a bad Wimbledon this year, but he could easily have a great US Open and today will be forgotten, but not by me. :(

The problem is that he cares for too many things. He likes to live life. But at some point you have to think that with all his talent on the tennis court, winning a slam would be a priority.

Seemed like he was in the right frame of mind and had what it took at the French Open but then the injury and now its back to the drawing board.

Yeah hate was a strong word, it is frustrated how I feel.

:( Ye'd better have a good US Open, otherwise............I'll do nothing and still suport him , but I will be mad for a long time, that's for sure.

Yesterday was a terrible day for David. He lost and Argentina lost either.I hope he's ok now.I can understand the reason why he wanted to see the match so much. Its understanding.People should stop blaming him for that.

I think that tennis is not David's first choice. He has other things that are of high importance to him. I think that is why he can be so good yet so frustrating at times. However ..... it is really frustrating being a fan.

Well, I'm done with tennis.
Grown tired of it altogether. But wanting to see David win a slam kept me viewing.
It's become increasingly difficult to follow his success, and I don't have the patience to fake an interest.

Good on those who are sticking with it.
