Do you like Nadal's English???

Hilarious IMO, yet in it's own way kind of cool. Saw him give an interview today after his win with Chris Fowler. Didn't understand half of it, but it was just great. Anyone else see it. I'm not a fan of his, but he is a genuine guy, who really has his head on his shoulders.

He actually is very smart, he's learnt english relatively quick. I've been trying to learn Spanish for...forever. I like his English, I didn't think his interview with Chris Fowler was a great example, but there have been good moments. I watched a press conference with him once, talking about James Blake, and he was actually very smart, and funny.

yes I like his English. At least he makes an effort to speak a language other than his mother tongue. I wonder how many tennis players with english as a mother tongue ever bother to learn Spanish, or any other language, let alone give an interview in one. So all credit to Rafa for learning a foreign language and giving media interviews in it in such a short time.

It is amazing how quickly he's learned English. Just like you, I've been trying to learn Spanish for years and I still suck - its hard to learn another language. I give him a lot of credit...he must have worked hard.

I do think his Englsih is very cute, and applaud him for trying his darndest to speak it as often as possible. But as a fan, I wish it was better because he has a lot more tennis smarts than are often revealed in his English interviews. When I read his Spanish interviews I am often struck by the dichotomy between how smart he sounds in the two respective languages.

i think his english is not very good, no? but it´s got charm, no?
he´s also making an effort to speak better english, no?
you´ve got to commend that, no? especially when you see that some players still use translators, no?

Nadal's English is a huge part of his charm. I like it a lot.

P.S. I wish someone would finally tell him that it's pressure, not pression. He's been making that mistake since last year. And it's a word you use all the time in tennis interviews.

"Pression" is awesome, as is "comparation" (comparison). His English is endearing, and is second only to Guga in that respect.

One, I'm proud of him. Two, yes, it's positively cute. Three, English should just borrow the word "pression" and move on. Eventually there would be a semantic distinction between "pression" and "pressure", and I as a linguist would be interested to see how it developed.

try to listen valentino rossi after the motogp and you see what ridiculous he is. english is not the only language in earth ... and the spaniards are not the best people to try to talk in other languages ... they dont even try to talk portuguese that is very similar. the british dont try to learn other languages to so ...

But I really appreciate rafael's efforts in learning it :)

I love when Rafa speaks english. Its really hard to learn another language, let alone English which has so many exceptions and rules. His english is a whole lot better than my spanish, or french, or any other languge. Hes actually done quite well for this short period of time, and hes willing to learn unlike some other players :p

Oh God it only reminds me of the Dativ. It still haunts me at night. Just kidding but I'l give Deutsch another try when I really have the time to seriously devote my energies to this marvelous yet complex language.

Phonetics wasn't that bad but grammar let's not go there. :tape:
