on wilander's blog:

Rescue Marat.

Tuesday night over dinner, the conversation turned to Marat Safin who lost yesterday. Being the only non-tennis pro at the table, I sat back and listened. There was a lot of concern expressed about Marat's performances of late, and Olivier came up with the idea of opening a new website called rescuemarat.com. I asked what would be posted on the site, and the answer was "a site for people to send love, support, money, encouragement, whatever, to make Marat feel better and encourage him to play better". Well, we are not going to start a new site, but the feeling was that he has much talent and skill that is being wasted. He could easily be competing with Nadal and Federer for the top spot. He probably only has 5 realistic years left in his career and for him it is now or never to end his career without any regrets. As Olivier says, "the energy he could get from the next 5 years would last him the rest of his life." Profound, eh?

Diego: Marat make a move..............now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Life is short....make a move!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Olivier: Rescue Marat is a main goal. He is the real spirit of this sport we all love. Like all the genius, he will be understood the day he quits... Understood in which way????

Mats: Save Marat, he completes the trio, Federer, Nadal and Safin!!

Marat can rescue himself.

But I wish he would - he's such an awesome player and personality and I thought he'd get back up the rankings much faster than this - he's been back since Dubai.

I can send to Marat love but after Roland Garros, i keep it for rafa for the moment

I'm really upset by the situation of Marat, as Mats said it's a real waste of talent, and i wish he'll recover his level of 2005 very soon !!! keep holding on Marat :)

If someone isn't trying to save himself, I doubt that anyone else can do it.

Besides, no one loses in such exciting and creative ways as Marat. He's practically turned it into an art form.

Poor Marat. He's nowhere near where he belongs. He played well on the grass last season ...well apart from that loss to Fidgiano at Wimbers :smash:, so hopefully he can turn it around. I can see him having a strong finish to the season :bounce:

I'm not sure either he would be very happy with a website rescuemarat.com :ignore:
Sure, he knows he has to do it himself. :)
Good luck marat, hope you turn things around pretty soon ;)

Never saw Gaudio losing hum ? :)Granted, Gaudio also loses rather dramatically; but with him it's tragedy. With Marat it's comedy.

You mean his level of final of 2004, coz 2005, apart of AO... really sucked.

My personal impression is that there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with Marat Safin's motivation at the moment he just can't move himself around the court as fast as the other guys due to his knees not being 100%. Hopefully in time they will improve. If not, well, on fast surfaces he may just about get away with it with some good serving and quick points but on clay I really don't see him being a factor anymore, sadly.

Granted, Gaudio also loses rather dramatically; but with him it's tragedy. With Marat it's comedy.

Gaudio destroying his own shorts, starting to laugh hysterically, starting to complain with his coach, talking like a madness man with him and the crowd is comedy at it's finest state! :)

Tragedy is more suited to PHM and Malisse :)

Although I shouldnt be laughin cuz watchin Gaston lose in the way only he can is quite sad.

In much of the times, tt's both at the same time :)

Mats Wilander hit the nail on the head when he refers to Marat's wasted talent. It seems absurd to call a former winner of the US Open and the Australian Open an under achiever but I'm afraid that is what Marat has become. I was at Bercy on both occasions that Marat won the Paris Open and on each occasion I thought that if he could continue in this vein he could challenge anyone for the number one ranking. The next few months are crucial...I have a horrible feeling that if Marat doesn't make a rapid improvement this year,he will never recapture the form that made him such a magnificent player in years gone by. Come back Marat...tennis needs you!
