you are all right :) from his shoulder things we could learn how hard he played such an incredible clay season :yeah: so it is a good rest for him not to begin grass matches right now, a necessary pause between clay and grass would help much

and we could take a rest too :p

Mashik
06-08-2006, 09:49 AM
You're right, we need a rest too. And how knows who needs it more

hehe, at least i am among the ones who really needs rest :p

but when i think of Ordina, feel so good, for its strawberry, its nice site jobs, and Mario's first title

you see, this year its list has so many big names so it would be very competitive

Queen without Mario :p

i am not sure of myself on Mario's defence Ordina :aplot: is this too hard for him?

vero
06-08-2006, 08:15 PM
Well, I'm not that much surprised. Mario had such a tough clay court season, with lots of long and tiring matches, plus back & shoulder injuries (or at least pains). He surely needs time to get energy back, and rest for both the body and the mind. It's probably a necessary pause, it wouldn't be helpful to rush to grass season whereas he's not ready for it!

06-08-2006, 08:21 PM

Queen's without Mario will suck. I was really looking forward to watching him in between my exams. but I suppose Wimby is more important. I'm not so sure about the defence of Ordina, but then again, he is a superlative grass player.

linus
06-12-2006, 10:26 AM
Grass season now turns a bit shorter to Mario so wish him healthy asap and nice-fighting as well coz we all know there are many good players who are keen on Wimby too :)

still wish Mario be in Rosmalen next week

vero
06-12-2006, 11:56 AM
Yeps, wish him to be ready for Rosmalen, at least to play (and win :p ) some matches on grass before Wimby  But as it looks to be more serious (shoulder injury) than I first thought (tired body), better not to take any risk to miss Wimby
Get well soon Mario

My dear Tosee, as I've just said in the 'let us talk' thread, your dear Marin has some chances to upset Robredo, don't you think? ;) And of course, glad he doesn't have to meet Mario :D

And Radicalgirl, actually he's already (means today) lost the points he earned last year, coz of the calendar ;)

linus
06-19-2006, 01:07 PM
it is fun to watch guys playing with some unknown players (i mean to us) of course in the end, our guys have to win :p

if Marin has enough energy and mental, if Mario would like to discuss with cute Marin about Robo's ball style, if Marin feels comfortable on Ordina's grass, if he UEs less tomorrow, why not born out some upset :aplot: of course, i wouldnt give my cute Marin any pressure, nothing to lose !!

I♥PsY@Mus!c
06-19-2006, 01:34 PM
Vero,I...didn't know that  coz I mainly just focus every tournament this and last year and not the date. :p Anyway Mario still needs points as well.I mean he can rank higher and pass some guys I don't like!

Linus,I think Marin can beat Robredo tomorrow,he is the tall guy and Robredo sucks on grass,Marin only needs big serve then can win! :aplot:

vero
06-19-2006, 01:39 PM
Yep, I guess they must have talked a bit abt the game on grass and Robredo's game as well, they might have even trained together  ;) Anyway, that's true, nth to lose and quite a good level of confidence with the three wins in the qualies :)
Btw, maybe it's better to talk abt this here, and forget the same topic talk in the 'let us talk' thread, no? ;)

As for Mario, hopefully the unknown qualy won't give Mario too much hard time

Linus,I think Marin can beat Robredo tomorrow,he is the tall guy and Robredo sucks on grass,Marin only needs big serve then can win! :aplot:
dont put your eagerness on my Marin' shoulders :haha:

this year, many players who sucked on grass made nice progress  of course i didnt want Robo to follow them at all esp when he faced my cute Marin :aplot:

yes, serve too key on grass, silly big Ivo Karlovic really impressed me on grass  Marin has improved much. early of this year even during DC, when he fell behind on his serve game, over 80% he would get broken but now he is more patient and is able to hold it no matter how tough his opponent is (of course his opponent not top ones :p ). in my eyes, the first important thing for tomorrow is the couragement then steady serve then fewer UEs then some luck. as for luck, i am sure we can bring him

the first match on grass of Mario made me a bit back to his first clay match vs German Kohl guy in Munich, the difference is that Mario won in the end. in my eyes, it is more difficult than that first clay match so Mario did very well in fact :aplot: though seems he has brought some scary feelings

maybe i have told myself even if Mario lost his first match, it was ok since first is always most not-easy  so everything turns better now :aplot: normally Sluiter couldnt stop Mario in my crazy mind  today's time fits me well. i will follow the scoreboard !!

and now lets enjoy some funny things from ATP site

『Third seed and defending champion Mario Ancic survived a tough opening to his grass court season with a 7-6(3), 6-7(0), 7-5 win over Pakistan qualifier Aisam Qureshi at the Ordina Open Monday. The 22-year-old fired 18 aces and won 85 percent of points on his first serve. Qureshi had dropped serve just once in the match before the final game, when Ancic claimed the decisive break after 2 hrs., 43 mins.

Ancic, who reached the Wimbledon semifinals last year, :aplot: came into the tournament high on confidence following a strong clay court swing, during which he reached quarterfinals of Roland Garros and Masters Series Rome and the semifinals of Masters Series Hamburg.

He improved to 32-12 on the year and remained on track to top his best career season (44-27), set last year. Ancic is 9-2 career in 's-Hertogenbosch, having also reached the semifinals in 2004.』

i wish ATP has a sensitive foreknow for this year

I got home just at the start of the match. Oh boy! Some great great tennis from both, kudos to Mario for hanging in there after losing the 1st set TB. I like Raemon a lot and they both showed great sportsmanship by conceding points to each other when the line judges or Grillotti got it wrong. :D It was really nice to see. :) Oh and the score if someone doesn't know 6-7 (6) 7-5 6-2.
The ES commentators kept on saying that Mario is the favourite to win the tournament now and that it should get easier after this match. Well, I'm LMAO, Santoro is not really piece a cake either. here reports from ATP site vs Santoro

『Ancic, Baghdatis in SF Showdown at Ordina Open
Third seed Mario Ancic continues to loom as a genuine Wimbledon contender after breezing into the semifinals of the Ordina Open with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Fabrice Santoro. Ancic, a 2005 Wimbledon semifinalist, is making his first appearance of the grass court season but has continued the hot form he displayed during the clay court swing.

『 Ancic Wins Nine Straight at Ordina Open
Third-seeded and defending champion Mario Ancic continued his solid play of late by defeating Marcos Baghdatis 7-6(4), 6-3 and booking a spot in the final of the Ordina Open on Friday.

The big-serving Croat has won 17 of his last 20 matches and is looking to capture his first title in 2006 after falling in the finals of Auckland (l. Nieminen) and Marseille (l. Clement).

The 22-year-old, who captured his career-first ATP title 's-Hertogenbosch last year, holds a lifetime 12-2 record in this tournament. He currently sits at a No. 12 in the INDESIT ATP Rankings.

Ancic will battle Jan Hernych, who posted a 6-2, 7-6(3) win over Florent Serra to move into his career-first ATP final. The Czech, now 11-13 in the season, had not won back-to-back matches prior to 's-Hertogenbosch.

Ancic will take a perfect 3-0 record against Hernych into tomorrow's final. The Croat, who did not drop a set in their three career mettings, defeated the Hernych twice on grass last season, in the 's-Hertogenbosch semifinals and Queen's first round.』

I have to say this match a bit out of my predictation :p at its beginning, i thought Mario should be going to win in 2 straight sets :aplot: the 1st set with 6-0 gave me some funny happiness, in my eyes, Hernych guy though was not good enough against top players but he still tough on grass, so i thought maybe Mario too wonderful

even in 2nd set, Mario got broken first, i was sure he would break back and he did. OMG, then something went wrong  maybe many ppl like me welcomed a tiebreak but it was 5-7

i was a bit hung up in the following  despite of his serve faults (maybe he was really exhausted  ) i put enough confidence on his fighting spirit which is the most improvement for Mario this year :yeah: :worship: Hernych guy really brave for most of 3rd set while he still couldnt fight over Mario in the end, God, i must give my thanks to him also :worship:

final report from ATP :)

『 Ancic Claims Second Consecutive Ordina Open Title

Third-seeded Mario Ancic claimed his second consecutive Ordina Open title in 's-Hertogenbosch by defeating Jan Hernych 6-0, 5-7, 7-5 on Saturday. Ancic, who captured his career-second ATP title, became the first player to win back-to-back crowns since Sjeng Schalken in 2002-03.

The Croat holds a strong 36-12 record this year. He reached a career-best INDESIT ATP Ranking of No. 9 last week and will once again be ranked inside the Top 10 in the INDESIT ATP Rankings next week.

The Croat had reached two finals this season in Auckland in January (l. to Nieminen) and Marseille in February (l. to Clement). But it was in the ATP Masters Series Rome that Ancic started an amazing run, winning 18 of his last 21 matches, reaching the semis at the ATP Masters Series Hamburg and quarterfinals in Rome and Roland Garros.

Ancic defeated qualifier Aisam –Ul-Haq Qureshi, Raemon Sluiter, Fabrice Santoro, Marcos Baghdatis and Jan Hernych en route to the title.

The 26-year-old Hernych was playing in his career-first ATP final. He has an 11-14 mark this year. 』

『 Ancic wobbles to title

Mario Ancic defended his title in S'Hertogenbosch on Saturday with a shaky 6-0 5-7 7-5 win over Jan Hernych. The Croatian blasted his Czech opponent away in the early stages of the match but had to fight off a determined comeback before taking a tense victory with his first match point.

Ancic's performance at the Wimbledon warm-up tournament put him back in the top 10 of the ATP rankings.

It looked to be plain sailing for Ancic, 22, after he took the first set 6-0 in just 22 minutes but Hernych got a better grip on the towering Croat's 200kph serve in the second set.

Ancic handed Hernych the set with a double fault.

He continued to struggle to hold serve in the third set, saving four break points but took his only chance at breaking the 26-year-old Czech player's serve, at 6-5 in the final set, to win the match.

At Wimbledon next week, Ancic is seeded seventh and will meet Spain's Nicolas Almagro in the first round. 』

『 Croatia's Ancic Wins Ordina Open Title (June 24, 2006, 12:08 PM EDT)

Mario Ancic of Croatia won his second consecutive title at the Ordina Open on Saturday, defeating Jan Hernych of the Czech Republic 6-0, 5-7, 7-5 in this Wimbledon tuneup.

This was the first time in four meetings that Hernych took a set off Ancic. Last year in Den Bosch he lost to Ancic in the semifinal. the 26-year-old Hernych has yet to win an ATP title. Ancic's only two championships have come at Den Bosch.

What looked like a potential rout turned into a tense match, with Ancic making errors and Hernych picking up his game in the second set.

"That's what happens on grass," Ancic said. "If you lose your focus, you opponents will take advantage of it." 』

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/sfl-wimb5men25jun25,0,7480297.story

MARIO ANCIC
Ranked/ seeded: 12/7
Age: 22
Ht/wt: 6-5/180
2006 record (grass): 36-12 (5-0)
2006 titles: 1 (Den Bosch, Netherlands)
Wimbledon record: 9-4

2005 Wimbledon: Round of 16 (lost to Feliciano Lopez)
Best Wimbledon: Semifinals (2004)
Profile: His game has matured to a point where he can be considered a serious Wimbledon contender, but only if Federer is knocked out before the final weekend. Excellent serve-and-volley player, and that could bother Federer, and he's quite athletic, despite his gawky look. Had only one career title before winning the grass-court Ordina Open on Saturday.
Odds: 10-1

Report from the Wimb. site:

http://www.wimbledon.org/images/pics/large/b_02_ancic_05_getty_i_walton.jpg

Tuesday, 27 June, 2006

Croatian giant Mario Ancic advanced into the second round of The Championships with a hard-fought win over little-known Spanish player Nicolas Almagro.

The No.7 seed, who famously is the last person to beat Roger Federer on the grass courts of SW19, sent down 21 aces as he triumphed 7-6 (6-2), 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) in 2 hours 37 minutes.

Hundreds of fans decked out in Croat national football shirts and flags had squeezed into Court 13 to cheer their most famous tennis player since 2001 Champion Goran Ivanisevic. And they weren't disappointed.

Despite a slight dip in concentration mid-way through the second-set, the 22-year-old Croat produced a refreshing display of traditional serve-and-volley play that would have made his hero Goran proud.

Almagro, who at 6ft stood almost seven inches shorter than his opponent, played his part in a thoroughly enjoyable and fiercely-contested first round match.

Maybe, just maybe, if the Spaniard had capitalised on one of his break point opportunities in the first set, the story could have been different.

Instead, after 12 consecutive breakless service games, a tie-break finally had to separate the pair.

Like a true pro, a pumped-up Ancic raised his game at the right moment, strolling through the tie-break 7-2.

After a tense and tight first set, many might have expected Almagro to run out of steam in the second.

Instead the 20-year-old came out looking the stronger and more aggressive player, breaking Ancic’s serve with a backhand drive in the eighth game to force a 5-3 advantage.

However his efforts were in vain. Cheered on by the crowd, Ancic, who is very much the image of Ivanisevic with his massive serve and gangly body, had the ability to raise his game once more, winning the next four games to complete a 7-5 second set victory.

Ever the fighter, Almagro was not prepared to let his head drop.

Another twelve fiercely-contested service games went by without a break of serve, leaving another tie-break needed to finalise proceedings.

Unfortunately for the Spaniard, nerves crept in once more and a controlled Ancic went on to win the tie-break 7-4.

Ancic will face experienced Italian David Sanguinetti in Round Two.

Good comment for Mario from tennis betting tips

The question is though who has the game and the mental resolve to trouble 'Roggie' at this year's event.
Step forward Mario Ancic.
The young Croatian was of course the last man to beat Federer at Wimbledon (in straight sets back in 2002), and there is a growing feeling that the big-server from Split could do some real damage this year.
Ancic comes into the event full of confidence having enjoyed a big season on clay (reaching the quarter-finals at Roland Garros and Rome and the last four in Hamburg).
His wins on red dirt came as something of a surprise given his game is so heavily reliant on serving well.
But they also showed his all-round game has improved, and there is no doubt his final rubber win at the back end of last year to land the Davis Cup for Croatia has boosted his confidence.
Last year 'Super Mario' went 9-2 on grass, and having reached the final of the Ordina Open at time of writing it's clear he is capable of bettering those stats this year.
He opens up against Spanish dirt-baller Nicolas Almagro, who will surely be in London just top make up the numbers.
At 20/1 Ancic looks well worth an interest. :wavey:

Match Reports
Super Mario Looks Ace
Tuesday, 27 June, 2006

The seventh seed, Mario Ancic advanced into the second round of The Championships with a hard-fought win over Nicolas Almagro of Spain, sending down 21 aces on his way to a 7-6 (6-2), 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) win in 2 hours 37 minutes.

Despite a slight dip in concentration mid-way through the second-set, the 22-year-old Croat - spurred by hundreds of fans decked out in Croatian football shirts in Court 13 - produced a display of traditional serve-and-volley play that would have made his hero, the 2001 Champion Goran Ivanisevic - proud.

Although it was a match dominated by serve, Almagro had a number of chances to break Ancic’s service in the opening set but the Spaniard failed to capitalise and after 12 consecutive breakless service games in the first set, there had to be a tie-break to separate the pair. However, it was the Croatian who prevailed, taking the tie-break 7-2 to win the set.

The 20-year-old Spaniard came back in the second set looking the stronger and more aggressive player, breaking Ancic’s serve with a backhand drive in the eighth game to force a 5-3 advantage. However, Ancic raised his game once more, winning the next four games to win the second set and take a two set to love lead.

Even though he had lost two close sets, Almagro did not let his head drop and continued to push Ancic to the end, forcing the third set into another tie-break. Unfortunately for the Spaniard, nerves crept in once more and a controlled Ancic went on to win the tie-break 7-4 and win a place in the second round.

Match Reports (Wednesday, 28 June, 2006)
Ancic Makes Sanguine Progress
Written by Barry Newcombe

『Mario Ancic defeated an ailing Davide Sanguinetti of Italy in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1, to reach the third round of the Gentlemen's Singles.

Ancic, the 22-year-old seventh seed, won in 101 minutes. The match was halted at the end of the first set when Sanguinetti, making his ninth successive appearance at The Championships, signified that he was feeling unwell. He received attention from a trainer before deciding to continue and had further attention at 3-0 in the second set.

Sanguinetti made a spectacular Wimbledon debut in 1998 when he made the quarter-final round unseeded, before losing to the Dutchman Richard Krajicek. He managed to remain on court but won only three more games as Ancic took complete command of proceedings.

Ancic is looking for a good run at Wimbledon, and his recent results suggest the Croat may be in the right frame of mind to do some damage later on. His ranking peaked at a career high of ninth this month and he came into Wimbledon on the back of winning the grass court title at s'Hertogenbosch last week. It is four years since he came into Wimbledon as a qualifier – and beat Roger Federer in straight sets in the first round – and two years since he was a semi-finalist.

Ancic served 12 aces in today's match, seven of them in the third set, and his serve peaked at 130 mph. That sounds like a useful foundation for the task ahead.』

AELTC Statement on Ancic v Wawrinka

Saturday, 1 July, 2006

Unfinished matches by convention are scheduled for completion as second match the next day on the same court. As there is likely to be insufficient time today to complete the published Centre Court programme the Referee has amended the Order of Play.

The Wawrinka vs Ancic match will now be completed as second match on Court 1 and if the Court 1 programme is thereby put at risk of not finishing to day the Baghdatis vs Grosjean match may be played elsewhere, if necessary. It is vital for the players that all the singles matches are completed today, to avoid disadvantaging any player and to maintain the overall event programme. We always try to be fair to all competitors.

News from WBD website

Mario Makes Last 16

Saturday, 1 July, 2006

Croat Mario Ancic advanced comfortably to the fourth round of the gentlemen’s singles by defeating Swiss player Stanislas Wawrinka in a match that spanned two days due to bad light.

The seventh seeded Croat, who was leading 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (5-7) before poor light suspended play yesterday, polished off the last two sets 6-1, 6-3 in 66 minutes.

Everything was working for the 22-year-old as he moved purposefully around the court, watched on by former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic. His famous huge serve enabled him to pick off easy volleys at the net, while his powerful returns proved too much for the 67th ranked Wawrinka.

The result was really no surprise given Ancic’s record at The Championships.
As a qualifier he famously knocked out Roger Federer in the first round of Wimbledon in 2002, and in 2004 he upset four times semi-finalist Tim Henman to earn a place in the last four.

It is obvious that the 6ft 5inch Croat is a dangerous contender. He entered the tournament having won the s’Hertogenbosch grass court title in the Netherlands last week and has only dropped one set on his way to the fourth round.

Ancic, who is in the same half of the draw as Roger Federer, faces Fernando Verdasco in the next round.

I meant abt Mario's performance, I was really scared after yesterday's Stan's performance, but Mario was just too good today.

I odviously cheered for Ivan, but Dima totally deserved to win and in the end I was glad that he did cause Ivan let him back into the match and sometimes I really don't understand him, he looks too passive! Even when he was serving for the match, who'd think that he'd got broken so easily? I actually expected it after his lousy performance all the way after the 2nd set. He doesn't use his great serve on grass the way he should! Tursunov- totally deserved win, great shots! Funny guy :)

oh, if i told you in some game thread, to predict the score ahead, before Round 3, what i wrote yesterday is "Ancic over Wawrinka 6-7 7-6 6-4 6-3" you can get that i didnt turn frightened at all :rolls:

to tell the truth, i didnt expect Ljubo to go so far on grass, sorry :p i thought Lopez would finish him with 1st round in 5 sets while this silly guy couldnt hold to the end

the serve means much to Ljubo, but too too much. Dima always slow when he matches  so i thought Ljubo would win at the first while really didnt believe Ljubo would win in the end, the MP really shocked me i had to admit :p God there

Dima is really a miracle player, you cant judge him with the theorized things. sometimes you are lucky to meet him coz he would be beaten easily  while you never know it is when  he could make himself back to give you the biggest hurt even fallen down already  seems all the things depend on himself not you :rolls: even on clay, his weakest surface, who could know the results of this year if you know he hardly practice and play there

too much already for his play, sorry :p

I hate it when ppl say that they can't play on grass, I mean, look at Nadal and what he's doing. No one gave him chances against Agassi and he almost trashed him. Ivan is like Marat, he convinces himself that he can't play on grass and then doesn't even try enough

Good luck to Dima against Nieminen, I hope he'll beat him, you know me don't like him, not one of my fav persons

oh, but my Dima couldnt manage to finish Ljubo in 3 sets, he couldnt without any doubt  no matter how he was perfect, he always would make something out of himself :rolls:

poor Ljubo, but thanks to his loss or we couldnt get Dima's interview, if..he won, we must have read Ljubo's interview but not that funny i was sure :p

why they wouldnt give Mario one still

i so wanna laugh when ppl said again and again Rafa was bad on grass, in my eyes, he just lack of enough practice there. just like Dima on clay. Rafa has a valuable advantage, his spirit and eagerness for win and never giving up !! so many players are short of that !! so i didnt think Agassi would win over him but the straight 3 sets again shocked me !! good boy Rafa is :yeah:

I didn't look down on him, but since Ljubo was 2-0 up and Dima didn't look like coming back until Ljubo let him
