Do you want to see more doubles matches during slams?

This question arises from this whiny item I found on Tennis Week's news section:

Doubles Is Missing Ingredient From French Open Feast
06/06/2006

Television coverage of the French Open lacks an important ingredient: doubles. We want to see doubles matches. I have just watched a long, boring five-set singles match from the French Open. It was nothing but a slugger match: who can hit the hardest and last the longest.

Why can't we see some good doubles matches on television?

At least in doubles you see the serve-and-volley game, a variety of shots, lots of action, exciting exchanges and teamwork, which is most exciting to watch.

Many of us watching the French Open are USTA League doubles players. Doubles is our game so why aren't we seeing any doubles on television? Five sets of clay-court tennis is too long and boring — that format should only be used in the semis and finals. Three sets is long enough to watch a player in the early rounds — any more than that and it becomes boring.

Sponsors should get smart and promote the doubles teams. The matches are much more exciting to watch and certainly move a lot faster and remember: many of us viewers are USTA doubles players.

I hear it all the time: "More people play doubles than singles, therefore more people are interested in watching doubles." but I'm not buying this argument because the proof is in the pudding: every time I see doubles on TV, the stands are empty, whether it's men's women's or mixed doubles, nooobodeee is watching. If so many people want to see doubles (the writer claims) then how come I never see all of these doubles enthusiasts sitting in the stands?

Remember how empty the stands were during the doubles finals at the USO? If championship finals can't get people watch doubles then why should programmers waste their time and money showing a lot of doubles matches that nobody's going to watch?

Also, what five set match was she referring to that was so boring?

I like doubles and I think some schedule time needs to be set aside to show some, if they are serious about getting doubles promoted, it's something the ATP needs to address urgently.

It's got to start somewhere - show a couple of doubles matches and the interest will start to come, but it's a bit chicken and egg - you have to show what's out there to get the viewers interested - they won't follow doubles if they never see any of it.

they should show at least a little doubles, especially in the later stages of the tournament, when there aren't so many singles-matches anymore anyway.
I would definitely love to see waske/pavel against the bryans :(

They definitely need to hype doubles if they want anyone to watch it, and they should show some of the later action.
I think it's harder for someone to be as emotionally attached to a doubles team as to his or her favorite player.

i havent seen any coverage of any doubles match
between matches I would prefer to see a littl eobit of doubles than replay or highlights of other matches
even at night during the highlights show, they dont even mention the doubles or show any footage

I am disappointed today, instead of showing Navratilova/Bob Bryan vs Kirilenko/Paes, ESPN replayed Hingis vs Clijster.

They need to show more doubles and more juniors (which means any at all)

For real. People would stay to watch Navratilova... but how many people would watch Hingis/Clijsters again?

I totally agree that they should show some doubles instead of taped matches that they have already shown. Like some others who have posted, I would most be interested in the latter stages.

I would also love if they would show some of the juniors finals. It would just be fun to see, in particular since some Monfils and Murray for example, were rockin' it in the juniors last year and have had some success this year. Personally, I would love to have been able to have seen some of Nalby when he was a junior with short hair and a trim waist.

I want to see doubles! Isn't it sad I've seen only three doubles matches this year, the three AO finals? :o

They must show some doubles for the game to get some hype, many doubles players have a lot of finesse and they volley a lot...something we don't get to see everyday  DOubles is really fun. Bryan bros, Paes, Buphati, and the whole doubles crew :worship: :D

Actually, there was something that Tangy said in the first post that's true - the stands just aren't filled.
I was shocked when I was watching the last two games of Hantuchova/Sugiyama vs Yan/Zheng - a semifinal match and the crowd was empty... almost. I would've been there =)

I actually like watching womens doubles but not so much mens doubles. Probably because more of the bigger names sometimes have a go in womens doubles whereas you hardly ever see the big singles stars of the mens tour play doubles these days.

I used to like doubles a lot more when the top players competed. Back in the 70s, 80s & 90s just about all the top women played doubles with a few exceptions and many of the top men played esp in the 70s. Borg & Connors started to focus more on singles and this seemed to start the trend for men to stop playing as much doubles unfortunately. McEnroe was always a huge supporter of doubles but after he retired many of the top men didn't bother.

If they made mens singles at the slams best of 3 with 3rd set T/B there might be more bigger names play. Then more people would be interested.

I saw the doubles match yesterday in Paris, and it was really amazing. Quite a lot of people showed up and the players appreciated it: 'thanks to all the spectators who stayed for a doubles match. This is the best a doubles match can be'
There was this one point...!! My God. Still looking for a video of it

The less doubles = the better. I would be happy if I didnt see a single doubles match on tv all year, no matter who was playing. I really cant stand doubles.

To answer the thread title's question simply:

No.

I've never been a huge fan of doubles.

Good point, if a doubles match is on at a tournament that I attend (I will most definately be home before it starts). It always annoys me when they put 1-2 doubles matches on the courts at the end of the day. I wish they would just put doubles matches on one court, so the doubles fans could enjoy doubles all day (the select few who actually do). And the people who hate doubles, wouldnt have to waste their time by watching it! Often there are too many singles matches happening at the same time anyway, so I think it would be nice to give doubles their own oop on a certain court/s.

yep! one or two points were  the one when Max hit the ball between the legs
It was Bob :worship:
I quote from rolandgarros.com:

'Lob between the legs'
La troisième manche débute par un coup génial de Bob le gaucher, un lob gagnant frappé entre les jambes. Un point fêté à leur façon par les deux frères, poitrine contre poitrine, à la manière de footballeurs américains célébrant un "touchdown".
The third set begins with a fantastic point of Bob, a winning lob hit between the legs. A point celebrated on their very own manner by the two brothers, breast against breast, just like the american football players do.

And it was right after a terrific rally where max also played a marvellous point.

Does anybody have a video of it?

Totally right. I went yesterday to Roland to support Juju off course and I had a very good time. Not because it was a great final, my god it was really oh so bad, but because she won. That was all.
But I especially enjoyed the doubles final

I certainly do. I am pretty disappointed in the ATP "Doubles Revolution" On TTC ATP tennis show they were talking about how much PR/promotion is being done. Who are they kidding? I have not seen as much doubles on my TV this year. Yes more than last but that isn't saying much. And I read here that the FO doubles final had hardly anyone in the stands. What happened to putting doubles on before a singles final when there might be a captured audience.

While I'm a fan of more tennis being shown, it's difficult to make the time to watch all the tennis I want to watch anyway. And if I had to choose, I'd always go with singles: you see greater physical feats, singles players have to exhibit more mental toughness, and it's just more exciting.

I rather see singles if I have to choose. I like seeing my favorite players playing doubles, but I have no interest in the doubles specialists.

I'll go see Jonas playing doubles, but you won't get me near the Bryan brothers. :p
