Biggest Marat heartbreak

Probably the most devastating match that I had to watch was him losing to Thomas Johansson, finals of the Australian Open 2002. He was the dead set favourite & he should've won, but he didn't...and I was admittedly very sad for a long time, heh.

(But I guess that is old news now and hopefully no more losses of that scale in the future.)

What is yours?

I agree with ya, Andrea; though it was more than midnight here at Ecuador, I was watching it live, and it was worse....coz I got more disappointed, I had already cried a lot when Marti lost that heartbreaking match ag. Capriati, and then Marat losing ag. Johansson?

Oh no....that was too much for me that weekend. I cried during it.

i also cried a lot  even days after! I was so disappointed. He had to win this final ... !
During Marat`s speech i was crying and laughing at the same time, lol. Cause he still managed to make such a funny and charastic speech even you could see how hurt he was.

Yep that's why he have to be careful with Brian V. in the first round and Massu or Nie. in the second...those guys have nothing to lose so they will go very pump at the AO...so is Marat LOL I really wish he'll have fun there and he'll be happy with his game...that's just what I want..to see him smilling lol and of course seeing him smillling with the trophy in his hand is what I'm dreaming about !

Marat has points to lose, unlike those guys. He has to defent the QF points from last year.

Jessi lol about the camping

Oh yes, his speech that day. I was basically doing the same thing (crying/laughing), it was really miserable because every emotional investment had been crammed into him winning it, but naturally the most disappointed person about his result would be him himself, and in his speech he was so gracious and made all these jokes, but you could tell that it wasn't what he wanted.

&afterwards in the press conference, because that day was his birthday, the organisers gave him this birthday cake and he said something like: "Well, at least one good thing has happened to me today."

Let's hope a repeat performance of that result in '02 doesn't happen this time around!

ignore these comments! DENIAL DENIAL is my motto! besides Marat doesn't have all the pressure, i'm sure mr seemingly-unbeatable nr 1 has some too, not?

If he loses to Rogi on Sunday, that's gonna be my biggest Marat heartbreak.

Gee, I still think Rogi will give him a lesson in the final! :awww:
Otherwise this is not normal!

no, I don't think it can be my biggest marat-heartbreak if you think 1 moment on where he is and coming from. off course there could be certain situations and/or scorelines that would get me in a mental breakdown, but with the way he's been playing and talking? NO WAY

Do not worry Iza ~he will win it!

This one hurts more. Because he actually wants it. What hurt me to watch this is, he's dead tired so he can't really do much.

Aurora

I'm not as heartbroken as back then, I'm not as dissapointed, frustrated or mad. He played a great tournament and he has come out stronger for the future! But yeah, 1 match away... sniff sniff

well..i think he could have won it if he stay calm..hehe..a bit dissapointed coz not the performance like he gave during vs agassi..but love the way crowds giving him support..hehe..i love the part when he forgot which side to serve and the crowd back him with cheers..well..i think he'll bound back...overall not that dissapointed..

This wasnt a hearbreaker, the 2002 was a heartbreaker because rightfully Marat SHOULD HAVE won the Australian open that year!

Shadow
02-01-2004, 03:07 PM
for me both is a big heartbreaker, but in a different way.

Like Kiara said, 2002 he SHOULD have won the AO. It was a huge disappointment and he chocked big time.

but this time my heart really cried out for him  He wanted it badly but his body couldnt take it anymore, no energy anymore, no game. and he basically couldnt do much although he was trying many things. That breaks my heart.

Iza
02-01-2004, 07:29 PM
i was sad this time 2 but i realized his body couldn't do it!

Though he lost yesterday I'm not that sad, I mean....he was the underdog, and Roger was the fave; which was the whole opposite of the final on 2002.

But anyway yes, that loss of yesterday hurted at least a bit, specially on the 3rd set, he was almost all the time nodding his head like saying: "No"....and all those times he really tried to focus, to concentrate, that's what made me a bit sadder, because he really was trying...

Aurora
02-01-2004, 11:07 PM
And then when the public cheered for him "I'm trying, I'm trying!!" ... poor guy!

We can't expect a miracle three times in a row. I'm proud of the fact this guy got this far into a tournament, unseeded, where in the beginning I realistically didn't expect him to reach the second week. It's a wonderful start of the year for him, if you look at it in the sense that he reached the finals - he owned this tournament - Marat Safin was the big story of the AO 04, not Roger Federer though he won. Those matches against Agassi and Roddick where amazing to watch, to watch him prevail.

&yes, it's heartbreaking to see him lose this one.
But I know and I hope that 2004 will be an excellent year for him. I hope greater things come.

Aurora
02-02-2004, 09:33 AM
well, he did need a miracle in the final, but the 2 before weren't miraculous, they were hardfought and he outplayed the opponent (ok andre helped in the end)

What I really love, is how everybody in GM who obviously didn't really know or remember Marat speaks so highly of him. And it's great to see him mentioned in the prospects and favourites for the futures... I already love 2004!!

Am I the only one here who is greatful that he lost in 3 sets not 5. I think a fight woul;d have aggravated the thought of "oh who cares that he's comming off an injury! If he reached the final could have won it just as well".

Shadow
02-03-2004, 08:05 PM
yeah for me its better to loose a grand slam final with playing a great match, then playing bad and having no energy anymore

Aurora
02-04-2004, 10:40 AM
yeah Vass that's true, now I didn't think more than 1 sec (when he had those breakpoints 1st set) that he could do it. Now I never really got my hopes up, and then the breakdown isn't as bad as it could be...

I think if he had won the first set, it would've been a little different.

The first & second sets were essentially close, but he broke away in the third. Roger always had the edge and later on had the way big edge, so to speak. Lol.

Both 2002 and 2004 would have to be my biggest heartbreaks. But i would definately have to agree that he was the big thing in this tournament pulling off what he did, just a pity that he couldn't go all they way.............just undortunately outclassed on the day! Oh well next Time!!!!!!!
