His mother dies days before the AO and he has to retire with injury problems at the Slam on his favourite surface.

Not the best of luck for Beto and hope the back gets better.

Benneteau wouldn't want to win this way, but he is in the QF now.

What's wrong with Beto?

As if the guy hasn't had enough bad luck this year

This was his big chance for a GS quarter final. Now he should go rest up and get better really soon!!

Beto

Fortunately, you are only Sylvester.

It's likely he won't come, in 5 years of tournament's history NONE of defending champions appeared the next year :p

that is really sad news for Beto who was doing so well. He really hasn't had any luck at the slams this year, with his mother passing away at AO time  I hope he gets better soon.

I'm happy for Julien though...great opportunity at home...and I wouldn't discount him in the quarters either

06-05-2006, 12:58 PM
:haha: Benneteau in the QF of a slam.

Man, that's funny :spit: :rolls:

06-05-2006, 01:23 PM
Benneteau or Martin anyway, that's not really QF material.

Martin injury puts Benneteau into quarters
By Andrew Bogusch
Monday, June 5, 2006

Frenchman Julien Benneteau reached his first career Grand Slam quarterfinal Monday when Albert Martin retired because of a back injury with Benneteau ahead, 5-1.

The Spanish veteran appeared to injure his lower back serving the initial point of the fifth game. He used a medical timeout at that point to address the issue and then tried to serve. Clearly in trouble, Martin netted a forehand, double-faulted on purpose and then served underhand into a Benneteau winner.

Martin received more treatment during the ensuing changeover, but could barely return in the sixth game. He then tried twice to serve, but let the second toss fall to the clay and abandoned the match.

Martin, 27, was in the round of 16 at a Grand Slam for the first time in his 12-year career.

Before the injury, the 95-ranked Benneteau jumped in front with a break in the third game thanks to consecutive backhand miscues from his opponent.

Benneteau is the first Frenchman in the quarterfinals here since Sebastien Grosjean in 2002. He awaits the winner of 4th-seeded Ivan Ljubicic and Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo.
