Served well, played some really good defense, and hit some great winners. In other words, basically what he has done in all his matches for the past 2.5 years.

Other than a little lapse at the beginning of the the third, this was no contest at all. Berdych hardly won any of the long rallies i.e. rallies longer than 7 strokes in this case as aspected. Federer put pressure on just about all of Berdman's serve games, having break points in most of the games or at least getting to deuce or 30.

Key stat. Well done Rog. :yeah: Now keep up the good work against Super Mario.

Easy ONe for the Mighty ....FED

Federer's FH was average for his standards, but his BH was as good as I have seen it. Interestingly enough, Fed stayed towards the back of the court more in this match than in any match during Roma or RG so far, content to trade groundies from the back of the court.

Bravo Fed! Virtue won once again!

Bedrych  I though you will be better, but you made it a pretty boring match

Now Federer has a lot in the tank and Ancic shouldn't trouble him on clay I suppose...

There was no doubt in my mind about the end result of this match going into the day. Berdych had to bring his A or A+ game to have a chance and with Tomas, that is extremely rare. Federer also makes it hard for Tomas, not giving him much to tee off on. He moved the serve around, varied the BH i.e. heavy topsin CC deep, slice short, inside out BH to the deuce court, BH DTL, brought Tomas forward, etc.

Yes - just what Federer needed.

Ancic may well be suffering still on Tuesday so with a bit of luck he can despatch Super Mario double quick time. I have a feeling he'll need the energy for the semi-final.

Disappointing match really. Failed to live up to its billing. Berdych is still something of a head case. When he sorts himself out he'll be an incredible player . Right now he needs to work on his attitude. I don't like seeing him hang his head down like that :bigcry::bigcry::bigcry:.

Anyway good win from Rogi :bounce::bounce::bounce:. Next the super hot Ancic. He's really come of age on clay. Can't wait for Tuesday.

Yeah, that was strange. When they displayed net points won, I was shocked. I guess, Roger played a more clay court game today because he rightly assumed that Berdych would play a high risk game.

Well done, Roger! :yeah:
Couldn't see the match and I doubt ESPN will show it on tape as it was so one-sided. I expected Berdych to give far more resistence, too bad he couldn't make it more competitive, but it's probably for the best. Roger's got already a tough road as it is.

Roger didn't disappoint today even with the usual donation of a game in the third set. Well done, Champ! :worship:

Yep Federer's backhand was working fine today. He shanked a few balls off his forehand side though. I was hoping for a few net approaches as well. He needs to practise that part of his game.

Also it was quite weird that both players had the same outfit. If they were women it would have been embarassing.

^Actually, their tops were slightly different. Roger's top had a collar, while Berdych's top was just a round-neck tee. Buy yeah, from afar they looked quite the same.

Federer is still getting revenge for the Olympics. he's not gonna be satisfied until he beats Berdych into oblivion.

Berdych will have his best results on hard and carpet courts which provide reliable bounce and ball speed. If Federer had a choice of surface to play Berdych it would be clay. Not sure how good Berdych is on grass. Berdych needs to control his error count, but did hit lot of winners.

Federer's game was ON today... loved every minute of it. He served well, aced quite a lot for an 1:40h something match, forehand accurate as always, his backhand really impressed me today (stepped it up A LOT since the Massu match), he came to the net when he needed to... everything was just perfect for him. A short mental lapse at the beginning of the third, but I'm glad he came back as quickly as he did. He needs to keep it up for the QF... Mario won't give up.

I would have thought grass would be the surface of choice for Roger against any opponent. ;)

Disappointing match really. Failed to live up to its billing.

Actually, it was great match for successfully pointing out the useless comments, or "billing" if you prefer, by a bunch of pre-match yammering folks who can't connect their theories with statistics.

http://www.atptennis.com/en/players/headtohead/head2head.asp?player1=federer&player2=berdych

http://www.atptennis.com/en/players/playerprofiles/playeractivity/default.asp?player=F324

http://www.atptennis.com/en/players/playerprofiles/playeractivity/default.asp?player=BA47

There isn't anything in the stats that even remotely suggest the pre-match "billing" would likely happen.

Rger was good today. Just doing enough to win. Next is Ancic. Better had those passing shots ready.

Great win from Roger, i thought Berdych could've at least tried more than that but maybe it was nerves. :)

NYCtennisfan

This was not tanking by Berdych and it was not a case of him not trying hard enough. He was nervous out on the big stage and Federer moved him around on his i.e. Federer's serve which threw off Berdych's rhythm.

Berdych looked like he was just going for clean winners on the second or third ball of each point and making some, but missing alot. He must not have thought he could rally with Federer so tried to keep the pionts short. Similar to what Federer does vs Nadal on clay, feels he cant rally with Nadal, is forced to go for winners on the 4th or 5th shot and make 100UE.

At 6'5'' Tomas is a very big guy. Not surprised at his mobility issues. He is so easy to wrong foot as well. The good news is that things can only get better for him.
