I usually love this sort of behaviour. Every time Mathieu made a great point, he gave Rafa quite a stare to let him know that PHM was not going to be intimidated by Nadal and each time Rafa made a point, he lets you share in his joy over it.
I like that. I really don't see why some find that annoying but...les goûts, įa ne se discute pas (I think that you could translate that as: to each their own)

Ok. Maybe not. But some people think the Nadal's leaps are disrespectful, and Blake has done the same thing.

I think it' s just in the way you interpret things.

Blake was arguing with the umpire after the match, and saying some things I thought were disrespectful to the umpire. It's not the first time Blake has had these sort of arguments with the umpire after the match. I don't like that particularly. It's not like he's the only one who has done it, but I think it would be better to pick up your bags and walk off the court becasue for sure if he had won, he wouldn't be qvetching with the umpire.

In his opinion, he has a valid point. But, in arguing he also sought to denigrate the umpire by saying "have you ever played tennis at a high level?" and kept repeating that point. "you've never played tennis at a high level" As if the umpire were clueless.

It's not a major point and I don't think Blake is a complete ass for what he did, but it's not dignified and he wouldn't have been arguing if he had won the match.

Players are entitled to their own way of celebrating. Can be a bit annoying at times (forme, it's Hewitt's COMAAAAWWNs that riles me up), but hey, they worked hard for it, they deserve their moment in the sun.

Plus, a player loses his right to contest something if he chooses to keep playing and doesn't bring it up immediately.

Regarding Rafa's vamoses and kicks -- he doesn't do them in the face of the opponent, unlike Hewitt. He turns his back or looks to the side, never directly at the other player. It's directed to himself (self-affirmation), really.

How is Monfils and Nadal different?? If anything, they are quite similar. I think they are both nice guys who have on court personalities that appeal to some and lack appeal to others. The posters in this thread were discussing Monfil's on court personality, yet your post attacked Monfil's on a personal level. Do you know Monfils personally?? What do you know about his personal taste? He has always come across in interviews as charming.

Since Monfils reminds you of behavior you have seen in the US, allow me to tell you what you remind me of.............someone who doesn't understand that all men are equal and someone who is still caught up in the "class" system.

Furthermore, I think you are lower than the rednecks I personally know because those I know would never call one man a nobleman and use a description for the black man that equals scum. This is not the first post in which you have used such stereotyping. The other day, you wrote in a post that only poor people cheat...........

Funny, the guy who you also involved in your BS, Nadal, seems to be a good friend of Monfils and even if he were not, I think Nadal would be simply disgusted by your post.

I'm finished having this discussion with you. You are taking away, from my pleasure, of Roger's match.

As I said in a similar thread on Nadal recently - I personally don't like all this in-your-face, aggressive stuff, and because of that I don't take to the behaviour of Monfils, Nadal, Hewitt - or any of these guys who are a little too "over-the-top" on court. I hate Monfils' "celebrations" at the end of the match - they're more like a goal scorer in the World Cup Final than a tennis player  and seem totally inappropriate. And like betterthanhenman said earlier - I loathe all this heart-thumping stuff. Having said that, Monfils is a young guy - and will probably calm down a little in time. I have met him off court, and he always appears respectful, quiet and almost shy (as Rafa does) - so I guess he just gets a little carried away with the emotion of the moment on court because he is young, and he may well calm down with age and maturity.

I can see both sides here. Yeah, antics like these can be quite annoying since it is a one-on-one sport--everyone knows who is being shown up. Growing up playing the sport from a very young age, it was always instilled in me by whoever was instructing me to not show up your opponent as it goes against the mores of tennis.

At the same time, it's probably good for the sport to have that type of demonstrative behavior on court as it will probably attract new fans and help keep the sport growing into new markets. I also tend to give the benefit of the doubt to young kids, which is what these guys are, who are playing in front of 15,000 fans and millions around the world. They get excited, they are in the moment, their adrenaline rushes...I can see how someone can get in the moment, especially if they are an emotional person. One caveat, it is obviously no OK if the emotions turn into direct insults at your opponent.

Personally, I don't like all this in-your-face behaviour and Nadal's on-court attitude turned me off from the get-go. Frankly I think Gael is over the top but I like him in spite of it and I hope he grows out of it. It's too much, even Nadal has calmed down a tad.

I think fans want a remote control to players emotions so that they can decide how they should react on court.

Hi Nathalia! :wavey:

The absolute irony of this thread is killing me.
I really didn't have intentions to post on MTF these days but you know that Gael has always been one of my top fave players and when I happened to read this how ironic thread ... how could I not react

Well, as for my support for Gael, he's an extremely nice person of the court, totally down to Earth... childish all the way including his admiration towards McDonald's, he's shy as it has been pointed, he always talks to his fans, plays basketball with the journalists. As about this dancing stuff, I wonder if he's ever done this before winning his ATP title, because the journalists begged him to dance and he did after winning the final.

All those impulsive reactions and his tennis are really showing he's still a kid and as somebody wrote with sense, he'll probably calm down when getting older, it can be either liked or disliked, but I don't think he deserves so harsh words he's getting.

I know. I was expecting some big show from Gael. We've seen other players do more than Monfils. But, watching the match, I could feel his excitement. This was a big moment in his career. He was given the chance to go to the 2nd week of a GS, and of all slams, the FO.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by too long. Are you talking about his forehand motion? Perhaps saying it is too loopy? Or are you saying that his forehand flies long on him too often? Where do babies come from? Am I asking too many questions?

Ok.

I agree. It's a home field advantage. Blake did not say much when it came to the crowd at the US Open against Nadal last year. They were terrible. They were calling Nadal anything to distract him, faggot, bitch, etc. I don't think he has much right to say anything if the same happens here. The French crowd was pretty reserved for most of the match. It was actually oddly quiet. Blake is nitpicking and should work on his mental toughness in 5 set matches, point blank.

Julio1974

Personally, I love the way that Gael and Rafa play. Their emotions and dances and whatnot are great. If the other players dont like it, then make them shut up by beating them. If you destroy Nadal, he cant get a fistpump in edgewise.

Also, why does every thread that Xristos posts in get turned into a repeat of the "Me" thread? We already know that Xristos is an idiot, a liar, a cocky punk, a tool, and sucks terribly at tennis and will never make the big time. Admittedly, this new "begging for good reps" is hilarious, but it is really beating a dead horse. Xristos is hated, no one likes him, he's an idiot, he can't spell, and is a tool, we know this already. :wavey: and by the way, ALLEZ GAEL!!!

He showed no respect at all for D.Norman in his previous match too. He was behaving like a jackass before shaking hands with his opponent after a 4 hours battle.Kid education and manners ?? Ever heard about ?? . I donīt think so.
Great spirit, amazing athlete but he urgently needs to learn how to win .
Here are some rules
1) Always shake your opponentīs hands before celebrating while he waits after a 5 hours battle . Respect in a victory is more important than when you lose.
2) Donīt celebrate your rivals mistakes while staring at them. Thatīs rude and unnecessary.
I guess he will learn , those are youth sins but right here, right now he has lost all my respect as a player. You canīt behave like that on a tennis court.
Concerning french crowd what can I say..... Booing Nadal after his amazing match against P.H.Mathieu..... What did the guy do ?? They canīt stand that french guys arenīt the ones winning in Paris. Nadal did nothing wrong in that match but jealousy itīs a very common disease. Iīve never seen a crowd like the french but it gets worse each year given the fact that no frenchman is even close of winning the title. I guess frustation and bad education always come together
