Hmmm....of course Nadal is a better clay-courter, but if someone can win a battle of " i'll stay out as long as it takes too win this match"-attitude against Nadal, it is Hewitt.

Remember Hewitt was the king of Nadal's defense all the time game, before Nadal took over. Could be a good match. If Matthieu can make Nadal work for almost 5-hours, I shrudder to what Lleyton can do.

I remember watching a match between those two at AO a few years ago. And Nadal gave him a very hard time. Keeping in mind that Hewitt isn't the player he was then, that he was at home with the support on the crowd, and above all that Nadal wasn't half the player he is now, I'm altogether not very optimistic about Lleyton's chances tomorrow...

But after all, if there's one single player out there who can overcome Nadal on his own turf (fist pumping and intimidation), it has to be Hewitt...and Lleyton has an amazing record against spanish players (I guess he likes to counter top-spin), so...who knows?

For the first time of my life, I'll be cheering for Hewitt...COME ON LLEYTON, YOU CAN DO IT!!! :rocker2:

That's why I think Lleyton is in there. It'd be a battle of mirror-images. Nadal ain't gonna blow Lleyton off the court, he ain't gonna out-intense Lleyton. Nadal is the fav, no doubt. But this could much harder than people are thinking.

Nadal is the clear favourite, but Lleyton is a special guy and he is able to do the impossible.
Let's not forget that Lleyton was able to beat Guga in his top days, in Brazil, on clay, in 3 sets, in a Davis Cup match. A guy who can do that, is capable of many things.

I'm hoping we get a hell (not only in the metaphorical sense  ) of a match.

COME ON, LLEYTON!

gillian
06-04-2006, 02:40 PM
I, too, hope we get a good competitive match. At the very least, it'll be noisy.

C'MON!

VAMOS!

Lleyton's certainly not going to hand the match to Rafael, but I still think Nadal is way too good on this surface, which is not Hewitt's best.

The match they played at last year's AO was pretty boisterous. And, as someone in this thread already noted, both players have changed a lot since then.

Ceri
06-04-2006, 02:49 PM
Oo, I can't wait for this match...sending positive vibes Lleyton's way, but he really does have to come out on fire tomorrow, he can't let Nadal get settled. Defense is good, yeah, but he really needs to take it to him from the outset. C'mon Lleyton!!

Anybody now has a chance against Nadal, but for sure the kid will fight until the end. He is the best fighter. The French crowd will support Hewitt because they don´t want a Spaniard winning RG again. Besides, if not Hewitt, it could be any other. There are so many players and all of them so good and ready to kill themselves for a day of glory against Nadal. Davydenko is looking great, Monfils is on fire and Fed is ready. Anything can happen but I hope that Rafa rises to the occasion... I think that he is great, just a very strong and leveled human being.

I dunno.... haven't had the opportunity to see how Lleyton has played at all this year but based on how Rafa is playing I don't think Lleyton will beat Rafa but never count Lleyton out, after all he was the #1 player in tennis at one time.

Merton

If he didn't stand a chance he would not step out there at all. Still, Nadal in 3.

scoobs
06-05-2006, 12:47 AM
Of course he has a chance. Just not a great one, IMO.

Depends how Nadal plays. Against quality opposition, he has yet to click into high gear in this tournament. He did enough against Kim in round 2 but struggled a lot with the conditions in round 1 and didn't play his best match by some distance against Mathieu.

Nadal may be saving mental energy for the final, which would be very wise.

But if he gives Hewitt an opening, it could get tricky, and I think what Rafa wants right now is a quick and fairly comfortable match.

My Score prediction is 6-3 6-1 5-7 6-2

This is not a Hard Court. All the three meetings were on Hard and two of them were in Australian Open and they last met at Jan 2005 and It was tough Five set victory for Hewitt. So I would definitely suprise if Hewitt wins.

I think he has a tiny chance. I just hope Nadal doesn't blow him out. This is an exciting matchup that deserves a good match. But anyways, blow-outs on clay don't happen all that often, especially when two players in the top-20 meet (yeah yeah it depends who but still... Lleyton can grind, so a long match will probably happen).

Hewitt plays very well right now.. What is better, Nadal is putting in a very serious courttime against opponents who really make him work hard, and that will inevitably accumulate, come finals ( if gets there ), because next two rounds are not going to be easier.. What is even better, already now he looks weary..

Well hey I don't know. Maybe our counting is off. But I ran track in high school and we had to count seconds between training sprints to give the right amount of time to restore heart rate, and we did this so often that I doubt I'm off by more than a sec when counting less than 30 sec. But again, I counted only one point, and it was after that point... So who knows.

Here the commentators didn't think it was misuse of power, everyone knows he sometimes surpasses the limit of time, and the umpire might have caught him this time. However he definitely could have complained about it, and yes JMac would have done so;).

I had the impression that he may have started too fast which wouldn't normally be a problem but perhaps now it is after Saturday. He should remember to be aggressive enough and let Lleyton do most of the running like in the 1st set.

Credit to Hewitt, though. He's playing a smart match. I so hope he can do good things on grass this year.

It's always great to see these two play against each other. Two great fighters.

How much of a chance will lleyton still think he has
Is it me, or is nadal not playing at his best, or at least as good as he was with PHM

For most of the 2nd and start of the 3rd nadal to me looked a little flat.. but now he seems to have found another gear, its just incredible. To think the amount of matches he's played - he just keeps comming out and finding a way to grind a win.

Hewitt is showing incredible talent to compete on clay with only a handful of matches - but that also means he's very fresh. If and when nadal loses on clay, i think it will mostly be due to burn-out. He's only human, something has got to give.

But after today’s performance there is no doubt that he is regaining some of his best form. He played unbelievable today, the precision and power on his shots was brilliant. Nadal has suddendly drop his level at 4-3. Maybe some tiredness from PHM match.

Nothing to do with that, simply momentum changed.

Nadal is putting in a very serious courttime against opponents who really make him work hard, and that will inevitably accumulate, come finals ( if gets there ), because next two rounds are not going to be easier.. What is even better, already now he looks weary..

U wish

Hewitt beating Nadal at his own (defensive) game. Nice. :)

Wrong analysis, Hewitt put Nadal into trouble by serving well, taking his CC bh early and being more agressive than usual.

I guess it takes simple game to beat simple game.

Nadal can't beat Lleyton from the back of the court so he has to rely on these stupid drop shots. He's a little rattled, getting beaten at this own game.

Sure Nadal can´t beat Hewitt from the backcourt and yes those dropshots were stupid and ugly shots, specially the one where he converted his break chance in the 3rd set :retard:

I agree 500% with you. I had not seen Lleyton play for a while but today I felt again why I am a big fan of his. I think he is a brilliant tennis player, still one of the best on the ATP. There are many big guys with a lot of muscles and huge serves out there, but few of them have the shot quality of Hewitt. He could perfectly follow Rafa most of the time.
I just wish he would not have played the drop shots in Rafa's running direction, you can never win the point if you do that coz he always brings it back.

I hope Fed has taped this match and will watch it every day at least five times coz if Lleyton can keep up with Rafa, Fed with a more solid serve and excellent net play, surely is able to beat Rafa.

This was a really good match. Rafa started off so well, but Lleyton just would not lie down and die. He played great, especially from the second half of the second set, and definitely gave Rafa a scare for a while. I wish it had been a shorter match, because Rafa really took too long to win these last two rounds, but I think Rafa will be very happy with his performance. He played some fantastic shots. The dropshot he played to break Lleyton was a jaw-dropper.

I'm glad Rafa noticed the ballkid with the nosebleed; the crowd has been against him in all his matches so far and a thing like this could help him win them over at least a little bit.

He was improved a lot, it has taken Mathieu playing out of his mind and Hewitt playing his best match since 2004 on clay to take a set out of him in this RG. I will gladly take that any day.

I think given Lleyton's lack of clay matches over the last 2 years and Nadal being on the longest clay court streak in the Open Era, Lleyton acquitted himself very well. Some really good rallies. That one bad midcourt forehand miss at 4-4 15-15 in the third set was a very costly miss from Lleyton. The set quickly slipped away after that one. Nadal was too good though. Some of the shots and gets were breathtaking.
This FO performance from Hewitt confirms what I said about Australia upsetting Argentina away being quite possible since argies can be great chokers (gaudio, + a coria with a damaged shoulder)
I know Lleyton took a lot of ribbing about his clay court preparation and how he'll do in the Davis Cup against Argentina on clay but I don't know if many of the Argentine team would have done much better against Nadal today.

Congrats Rafa, he came through two very tough rounds and now he is at the quarterfinals, i agree that he has improved since last year, i don't remember him having a slice backhand or a dropshot backhand. However, i think his serve has been worse than it was in Rome. Granted, this may be due to facing two excellent returners in Paulo and Lleyton. For some reason the match today reminded me of the AO 2004 match between Roger and Lleyton.

Lleyton showed what a fighter he is, i was impressed by how he seized the momentum in the second half of the 2nd set. His serve was very good today, almost as good as it was in the 2005 AO. For some reason i don't expect him to be a big factor in the grass court season but he will be in the hard court season.

I think the opposition should be more concerned now that Brad seems ready to jump off the bandwagon  I still remember him claiming that Rafa is the best claycourt player he has ever seen (definitely not true for me, he is not as good as top Guga was, and there are other players one can think of) and that he would challenge Borg's record of 6 RG titles (this looks downright laughable, with Rafa having only 1 title at the moment)

Great fight by Lleyton. It's really good to see him looking sharp again after his form early this year. But even after he won the second set, there was no doubt that this would be Rafa's day. Rafa didn't play his best by a long shot, but he was in control, and raised his game when it counted. You can bet that against foes that can do more damage to him, he'll play more aggressively. For large stretches in the middle of the match, his shots were falling so short, which allowed Hewitt to take control (though credit to Lleyton for his aggressive play, of course). No doubt Nadal's a more versatile player than last year, but his bread and butter will always be his speed and incredible ability to hit winners from impossibly far. Looking forward to this matchup with Djokovic.

I really enjoyed some of the comments Rafa made about Lleyton in his interview. But Hewitt is someone, I mean, you let him grab a finger and he takes the arm. He's really a great competitor. He's demonstrated this on a number of occasions.
....

He's a very nice player. I like his game. I like his attitude. I like his style. I like the way he manages his matches. I mean, he lost today, but he's someone who is a real fighter. He has a very good game. He's never had a problem with me, nor I with him. He's always wished me good luck.

Excellent performance by Hewitt; Nadal being most comfortable on clay and Hewitt least comfortable on clay courts. He has not played much recently, particularly on clay, and manages to push Nadal. I thought Nadal was looking a bit flat out there, a bit tired, especially towards the end - he wasn't chasing down some balls he would normally be all over on the forehand wing.

At that point, though, he'd done enough to ride the wave to victory - Hewitt was tiring too.

He was better than he has been all tournament, for sure, but little lapse cost him the second set and kept him out there an extra hour. He'll want to, and I'm sure he will, go up another gear or so for the QFs and keep improving.

Nadal was looking a lot better today, than in his match against Mathieu. I'd say Lleyton was a tougher opponent, but that Nadal stepped up his game, like I hoped he would. I imagine he will be improving his game throughout the tournament. :yeah:

He was, wasn't he?

But I always have the impression that Rafael and Lleyton appreciate each other a lot - perhaps not enough to be friends - but their body language towards each other has always been positive in every match.

Yeah, I noticed that too. They seem to genuinely appreciate each others' games and playing each other. They looked to be having fun to. Usually, Nadal is strictly a fierce and intense competitor (similar to Sharapova in the way he is business-like, but less cold than her). But I saw him show that side of him when he played Baghdatis (at the Pacific Life, I think?). They must get along well off the court because afterwards they seemed like they had a great time.

Hewitt should be able to take a set.

That's what I thought all along and he actually hung in there. Of course Nadal was far from his best form, he was missing some very simple forehands it was kind of strange the way he's been missing some easy shots for him. Well he does seem better when on the move or on the run.

Nadal had really nice words about Hewitt in his interview:

Q. Did Hewitt say anything special? This is the first time you beat him.

RAFAEL NADAL: No. When the ball bounced on the net, I just looked at him and said sorry. He was laughing. I've always had a very good relationship with him. Every time we've played a match, usually he's won the previous matches. It's always been a very tough match, very close. He always had very good words for me in the past, as today. He always said that he liked playing against me. The match was always tough.

He's a very nice player. I like his game. I like his attitude. I like his style. I like the way he manages his matches. I mean, he lost today, but he's someone who is a real fighter. He has a very good game. He's never had a problem with me, nor I with him. He's always wished me good luck.

Q. Do you think you can compare yourself to him in terms of fighting spirit?

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, we're different. I think we play differently. We have a different fighting spirit. True, we are two fighters.

Some kid with a nose bleed. I can´t believe Rafa saw and that and the kid did not say anything.

if nadal didn't say anything, the kind wouldn't have say something. and the kid was bleeding down his arm.

I am a Lleyton fan so I was cheering for him too;) but considering he hardly had any match on clay, reaching the 4th round in paris and giving Rafa such a run is really something to be proud of
