Hm no ATP tournament on grass with Nico.

I wonder if Nico will be seeded for Wimbledon? I think he is #30 in the entry list at the moment. But i don´t know because these Wimbledon management always make their own seeding list.

you're right Tommy, we don't know it and it seems that we'll have to wait until this Wimbledon people decide what to do this year with their tournament ('cause it seems that they're separate from the ATP lol!)

I heard they have a guaranteed 3 matches - I think that's probably why Nico signed up for it - gives him a chance to have a really good warmup for Wimbledon.

No info today on when Nico is flying out to the UK.

It has to be today - takes about a day and a half with time changes for him to get there.

Play starts Tuesday.

This leaves him zero time to get ready to play on grass.

Guess he's not taking the grass season very seriously. Not good. :-(

06-18-2006, 02:37 PM
Don´t be worry NicoFan! :) He has enough time to prepare for Wimbledon. But it´s important to play some matches before Wimbledon starts...so i´m happy that Nico will playing this challenge.

On the other hand grass isn´t his favourite surface. But he can play successful when he want i would say. On grass too!

Btw - I´m very confused with this Boodles Challenge. I don´t know which players starts there finally!? :help:

NicoFan
06-18-2006, 02:44 PM
We're all confused with the Bloodles Challenge.

The web site isn't very good, and I guess the info coming out from there including the draws and scores will be very late.

Well, I criticized the American players for not getting their butts over to Europe for the clay season so I would be a hypocrite if I just ;) 'ed at Nico doing the same for grass.

I really wanted him to get this vacation - he deserved it. He really worked hard over the last months to move back up the rankings. And he hadn't been home in so long.

But he could have left on Friday or Saturday, and at least get 1-2 days of practice in. I can't see him being able to get any practice in leaving today.

Hopefully he will be ready for Wimbledon. He only made it to the second round last year so this is a chance to pick up points.

*Ljubica*
06-18-2006, 03:53 PM
OK - just surfing around MTF (I tend to avoid it a lot during the grass season :p ) and I saw you talking about the Boodles Challenge...............so as it's in my local tennis club I thought I'd better try and explain it if I can.

It's a round robin event involving 8 players - players this year are Andre Agassi, Fernando Gonzalez, David Nalbandian, James Blake, Radek Stepanek, Mardy Fish, Nico Massu and one other yet to be decided. A load of top players choose to practice there for Wimbledon anyway, so they always have a few top players to draft in at the last minute.

Over the first two days, four 1st round matches will take place, - draw has not been done yet. In previous years all four of these matches took place on the Wednesday,- but because the event is usually a sell-out they added an extra day this year so they'll be spread over 2 days.

Once these matches are completed the four winners will play each other on Thursday and Friday, with the two successful players meeting in the Final on Saturday afternoon. The four losers will also play each other and the two winners of these "losers" matches (does that make sense?) will then play each other in a match for 3rd place on Saturday. They also arrange "exhibition" one-off matches for the four players not involved in proper matches on Saturday, so that everyone has the chance to play 3 matches.

I can't deny the draws, OOPs and results will be late - especially as people tend to drop out at the last minute - especally if they lose their first matches or of there's any hint of an injury that might affect their Wimbledon fitness. I do live very close though, so although I probably won't be going this year for various family reasons (I normally go), - if I decide to go or talk to any of my friends who work there I can let you no any news I find out.

As a bit of background - as well as the competition itself, there are various other exhibition matches and events going on throughout the week too - often involving veterans (Pat Cash and Goran Ivanisevic usually play), - and a couple of womens' matches. Sharapova usually goes as she played there just before she won Wimbledon in 2004, and seems to think the place brings her luck! Oh - and you get ghastly British celebrities like Cliff Richard playing their too :bolt:

Stoke Park (the club where it's held) was the Hotel they used in the first "Bridget Jones" film and has also featured in a couple of James Bond movies. The gardens etc are very beautiful there.

Although the event is obviously there to give players' grass practice - us locals mainly see it as a charity thing. The couple who came up with the idea a few years ago, tragically lost their daughter in a car accident nearby, and they have set up a childrens' ward in a local Hospital in her memory. Every year they auction various things like tennis memorabilia or the chance to "meet the stars" with all the money going to the childrens' ward.

Hope that helps a bit to give you some background.

And Mae is right - Boodles isn't that important - its Wimbledon that matters! :) And this is a good warmup for him.

NicoFan

I was just coming back on to check that Alx. I was going to look at Rosie's post and see what she said about the days.

NicoFan
06-22-2006, 06:53 PM

According to what Rosie said Nico can't be playing Saturday because that's when the winners of both the winners and losers play. He and Luis s/b playing tomorrow.

He was meant to be taking part in the exhibition from the start, but a combination of his recent injury and the fact he wanted to see Argentina/Holland in the World Cup last night  successfully f***** that up  They then offered him a one-off exhibition against Haas to be played after the winners' matches on Saturday -but he didn't want to play on Saturday because he thought it was too close to Wimbledon, in case he has to play in the top half of the draw on Monday. So he threw a tantrum  used his "pulling power" as the highest seed and a regular at Boodles, and got scheduled for tomorrow, thus messing Nico up  Sorry. I couldn't think where to look - and then thought - look up a player I know would have been seeded last year and check their record on atptennis.com. I looked up Andy, and the seeds do have to play the first round. So lucky BYE doesn't have to play on the green stuff. ;)

*Ljubica*
06-23-2006, 11:05 AM
OK guys - please do not despair about a 1st round clash with "Puke Boy" - it s not an insurmountable problem. Murray has been suffering somewhat of a crisis of confidence since he split with his coach in April, and since then has only got past the 1st round of a tournament once - that was this week in Nottingham where he reached the 3rd round and lost to Andreas Seppi, who is not exactly a grass court specialist. He is very nervy and erratic in his play lately, and if Nico stays calm and plays to his best level he should be able to beat him. Only problem as I see it, is that Murray is one of these players who loves to play at home and rises to the occasion in front of his own crowd. Some, like Henman, don't like the extra attention and pressure, but Murray loves it, and will milk the crowd for all he can - with petulance, bad behaviour, questioning line-calls, gamesmanship........almost anything to whip the crowd up further to support him more vocally and upset his opponent  If Nico can stay calm like Seppi did yesterday and rise above that - Murray wil be hard - but NOT totally useless. Hope that helped a bit.

Although Nico says that he loves it when the crowd is against him - gets him psyched up.

I think it will come down to whether Nico get in enough practice so that he feels somewhat confident on grass.

Think it may also depend a lot on the weather. Yesterday at Nottingham, it was VERY windy, and Murray said he hated that. So if the conditions are damp, heavy or blustery, then Nico, who is physically stronger with more weight of shot, would have the advantage. According to our long range weather forecasts, the temperatures are due to be about 24/25 C early next week, with some humidity and not much wind , but English weather is notoriously unpredictable - and we do get a lot of storms in June that would slow the courts down a bit and usually have strong winds preceeding them for a few hours - so you can always pray for them!!!

NicoFan
06-23-2006, 12:26 PM

NicoFan I told you that you should had stay on bed!! ... oh well I'm really not surprised about the draw, we never have good luck with this stupid things and I know that he has to defend points from a second round, but since I hate the green stuff I don't give a damn about Wimbledon!!!! maybe he could go down in the ranking a little bit but we still have some good clay tournaments that Nico loves to play so he can recover some places there.

And Rosie has a good point about Murray, it could have been worse :p ... and you also have a good point NicoFan, Nico loves to have the crowd against him but he doesn't like wind at all so I'll be praying for slower courts but not for windy weather

Nobody knows what will happen, if Nico plays like he did it during DC in USA, he has good chances and one thing is for sure, even that he doesn't like grass he always gives his best in every surface so we can hope for some nice surprises from him :yeah:

:haha: :haha: I feel exactly the same everytime DN plays now. He doesn't respect people - so I can't respect him anymore. One good thing for Wimbledon though - he plays Wesley Moodie in the first round. Wesley is a HUGE server and DN hates playiig them on grass.......and more importantly he is Australian, which means he will have almost the whole of the crowd support :p Wimbledon is always full of Aussies - they pack out the outside courts, they get very drunk and they make an awful lot of noise - especially with the Argentina/Australia DC tie coming up - trust me Nalbandian will HATE it :haha:

One more thing - I may go to Wimby on Tuesday. I hate the place and would never buy a ticket :o but I may be able to get a pass so I can go and support David Ferrer and Gastón in their 1st round matches. It would also give me a chance to see Gonzalez/Horna. Sadly I won't get to see Nico's match because it will be on a Show Court, and my pass won't give me Show Court access  but I could always cheer him on from Henman Hill (they have a big screen there) and p*** off all the Murray fans :haha: Will let you know if it happens!

:haha: Evil laughter.  Have a great time David! ;)

I'm sure everyone is tired of me saying how much I love Wimbledon, but sorrrry once again...I love Wimbledon! I hate grass but when I went to teh tournament, I have to admit, I still loved it. Everything...the queueing, the strawberries and creme, just being in the Cathedral of tennis. It was awesome.

So I'm totally jealous Rosie! Have a great time cheering on David F (the only David!), and of course Gaston who finally is showing up there! :haha: Say 'hola' to Fer G and Lucho for us. And yes, if you have time cheer Nico on on Henman Hill! (I love Henman Hill....one of my favorite parts of Wimbledon!). It would piss of the Murray fans and that is always good. ;)

I'll do my best. I guess, as a Brit, I'm just bored with Wimbledon more than anything else! I went for the first time with my parents when I was 5 years old, and then on annual school trips - so I guess it's a case of familiarity breeding contempt. Plus, of course, the media here think Wimbledon is the only tennis tournament and grass the only surface  - and it gets very wearing to hear them talking about it in every TV commentary and newspaper article for 12 months of the year.

Also - it's just so crowded - which when you're used to the smaller European clay court tournaments is very irritating. When you go to somewhere like Munich or Stuttgart - the players stroll around unaccompanied, sit in the Bars with the fans and act normally - but at Wimbledon they're surrounded by bodyguards and secuirty. I remember last year, one of the players stopped in one of the walkways to say "hello" and chat to me because he recognised me from staying in the same Hotel at Roland Garros the month before - and the security men were like....... he'is talking to a fan  That cannot be possible - and it just annoys me!!!

As for the strawberries - I grow them in my garden - and homegrown ones are so much nicer than the shop bought ones you get at Wimbledon! Having said that - it would be churlish of me to turn down a free pass  - so I will go and try and avoid the melee and pretend I'm on clay for a day :p

That's how I feel Rosie about the US Open. I guess familiarity does breed contempt. I see everything that is wrong, the USTA makes me so pissed off 99% of the time, and I hate hardcourts. And every time I'm in Arthur Ashe stadium, I want to scream because the great man himself would have hated that stadium, all that it stands for - a place where only the wealthy can watch tennis without have to look on the giant screens - and that his name is attached to it.

I think I loved Wimbledon becuase I had never been, I love everything England  .

I like the tournaments too where you're walking around with the players. Miami is great for seeing the players, and ditto Cincy - probably the most fan friendly tournament that I've ever been too. Miami is probably my fav tournament because they treat the South American players so well...you just don't get that at other tournaments that I've been too except the Pilot Pen in New Haven - NH has a large latino population.

Though I have to say that I see my favs up close and personal a lot at the US Open. Much more than Wimbledon that kind of hides the players. The guys have to walk the grounds at the National Tennis Center. And I see Nico and others sometimes twice a day in practice.

You're right that WImbledon hides the players. Even the practice courts are hidden away, and they think it's an honour for you to stand on some kind of viewing platform to watch them from afar  Roland Garros is much nicer in all respects.

I've heard so many good things about Cincy - we get the Masters' on TV - though of course the time difference means we don't actually see much of it  Unless your player is scheduled 1st or 2nd match we don't get any chance to watch, as coverage ends at midnight here

Someday I have to get to RG. My dream.

And the time differences suck on both sides of the pond!

Although I think its worse for the Europeans because while we have to get up early at like 5 or 6 a.m. for the earliest matches in Europe, because the tournaments in North/Central/South America have so many night matches that don't start until 8, 9, or even 10 at night - that's really the middle of the night for you all.

Yes - I think you're right. 9.00pm on your side of the Atlantic is about 2.00am for us - and impossible to follow for people that are working  We have to get up early for the Australian stuff and it's a lot easier.

And - yes you MUST get to RG one day - fantastic venue, beautiful clay :inlove: great city, great food, plenty to do away from the tennis. RG has a very special "feel" to it - I can't wait to go there again next year!

It's already raining here now - so we're getting into practice!!!! Bizarrely - we've had hardly any rain these past weeks - temperatures have been up in the high 20's C and we even have a hose-pipe ban in this area......but somehow as soon as Wimbledon starts - the heavens open!! It wasn't forecast a few days ago - but, as I said somewhere here before - our weather IS very unpredictable and changes from day to day......that's why we talk about it all the time :p

I saw that.

When I was at Wimbly in 2004, it rained almost everyday for awhile. And I was there that Wednesday (and like an idiot stayed all day) that was the first time a day had been completely washed out with absolutely no play.

BTW - I have a Wimbledon complaint. Not fair to have Richard have to play on Monday after just playing the final yesterday in Nottingham. I know that its tradition for the defending champion to play on the first Monday. But screw tradition! Yes, yes, I also know that its impossible for Wimbledon to screw tradition! :haha: But really seriously, its so unfair to Richard.

Well - you know I don't like Wimbledon - but I do see their point on this one. Top half of the draw always plays on Monday and bottom half on Tuesday - I'm pretty sure Roland Garros always did the same until they experimented with their Sunday start this year. I know it sounds daft, but it would not simply be a case of waiving rules and changing Richard's match, - other players and other matches woud have to switched as well to accomodate his change............. and with the weather problems and the inevitable rain delays we have throughout the tournament, it could create a logistic nightmare by the end of the week. I guess Wimbledon's argument would be that if Richard wanted to make 100% sure he wasn't too tired, he should have played one of the many exhibitions here last week instead of Nottingham which would have given him more time off to prepare.....but he made his choice knowing the rules at Wimby, and now must take the consequences

The US Open does it differently so I was thinking of the way they do the first round - it goes over 3 days - Monday through Wednesday. So I thought just play them on Tuesday - no biggie. But you're right here it would make a difference.

But I don't think that a player should be punished for playing a tournament the previous week. The US Open supports the pre-tournaments. Wimbly should do the same.

The US Open is the only Grand Slam to play the 1st round over 3 days - it only happens in the others if there are rain delays. I suppose it's what you get used to - but interestingly, the 3-day 1st round has often been voted the thing that most Europeans dislike most about the US Open! It just seems wrong and unnatural to us somehow to spread it over such a long period, and means some people have completed two rounds while others haven't even played their first  The other thing about the schedule at Wimbledon of course is that we have no play on the middle Sunday here - so the schedule has to very strict to clear all the matches on time.

As for Wimby supporting the pre-touraments - sadly one of the thingsI personally hate about Wimbledon is that it lives so far up it's own **** that it doesn't think of anything else but itself!!!

Good grief...I have to pay better attention to the details... I didn't know that we're the only ones that have a first round over 3 days. Its because I'm there in person - when I'm following via TV or the internet, I'm just checking when my favs are playing (good excuse, right? ) Though on Wednesday there really are only a few singles matches...lots of doubles matches on Wednesday at the US open. One of my least fav days...sorrrrry doubles fans. :p

Yup, Wimbledon does seem to only care about itself. Too bad - its nice that the US Open works together with the other tournaments here - well really its the USTA - one of the few things they do well :o . I especially like that they all have the same courts....it gives the guys a good warmup for the US Open.

Yes - that is a good idea about the courts. Funny thing is, it is a well known fact here that the grass courts at Queens are far better than those at Wimbledon :o but the AELTC won't admit it!

By the way - hate to tell you - but it's really raining here now  Lots and lots of rain - has been for hours. LOL - well - I'll try - but we have a new Tournament Referee this year (it's his first day in his new job poor soul!) - so I'm not 100% sure how they will do it. However - if it goes according to former years - they'll play today's matches tomorrow in pretty much the same order as they should have been played today - but they'll throw some extra ones in too. For example, they will have to fit Venus onto Centre Court at some stage I imagine, because Ladies' Champion always opens proceedings on Centre on Tuesday, and also the match involving her 2nd round opponent will have to be played to make it fair to both parties.

No decision on Sunday play will be made this early - normally they don't do that until Friday or Saturday - as they try to avoid doing it at all costs, and hope to clear the backlog before then. The forecast for Wednesday/Thursday/Friday and Saturday is actually fine so they should do that!

As far as Nico's match is concerned  I personaly think it's unlikely he will play tomorrow - his match will be scheduled on Wednesday I imagine, though it will be at least another couple of hours til an OOP is produced for tomorrow as it must be a logistic nightmare for them. They can always start matches an hour or so earlier on outside courts to try and get back on track.

From a personal point of view - I've given up the idea of going tomorrow and swopped my pass for one on Wednesday instead. It's meant to be drier with some play tomorrow, but still not good, and they forecast thunderstorms which I hate  I'll try and keep you posted.

I doubt Nico will play tomorrow either.

When I was there for the all day rain they didn't tell us that play was called for the day until 7:00 p.m. - which is around right now.

I hope not either Alx - I'm worried about that.

But he has played on Centre Court once before - I beleive it was in 2001 - definitely against Andre.

I have a DVD of it - he looked so adorable even though Andre was beating him.

At this moment, I was interested particurarly by Andre and Marcelo results. They were my two protégés (it's really a word used in english ? I found it in my dictionary).

It was Wimbly 2001.

Not a pretty scoreline - R32 Agassi, Andre (USA) 2 - 3-6 1-6 1-6

But....he still looked very cute. :yeah:

I never like to correct people's English but since you asked  It wouldn't be protege here - that means someone under your protection in order to further their career.

You could say they were your two idols.

Or they influenced your tennis game.

Depending on what exactly they meant to you.

Alx

My idols yes but that's not what I mean. I mean my favourites players, in French we say "chouchou". It means favourites but it's a nice word, it's affectionate.

Oh that sounds nice - I like that. I don't think we have a word in English that would be the equivalent. I'll have to check.

That's why the French language is so awesome....its much more expressive than English.

They played in Court 1, not in Centre Court. Agassi won 6-3 6-1 6-1 at Wimby 2001 in the 3rd Round.
Would be the first time that Nico plays in that so majestic stage
I do not believe that it is put nervous to play there, to this height to Nico anything could put it nervous.

Hopefully it does not rain tomorrow

GO NICOOOOOOO

Hi guys
Woah! I didn't expected Nico to be scheduled on Centre Court but due the importance of Murray nowadays and like Rosie said, He loves the media , He could has told to the org to be scheduled there ;)
I don't think Nicolas will be nervous playing on Centre Court, I think He'll be pleased, He played on Chatrier :hearts: and now, the most important court in Wimbly! :hearts: He'll be motivated :yeah:

So, Good Luck to our man :hatoff:

i am sorry i popped back late, I just got busy in the office. NicoFan, Sparko, Kidnicky and all others on this forum. i want to explain my remarks about Murray. Well, I don't hate him or dislike im as a person. After all I don't know him personally and how can I judge him a a person. In fact i have stopped hating people anyone since I realised a few things about life. Anyway, he is not even half my age so why did I want him beaten to a pulp? well, for one his actions on the cour, hisabuiveness and dmeanor and lack of respect for players, officials etc is the pits as far as I am concerned. His arrogance in media interviews i can probably take, but his total lack of respect sown on court ( i think it was during a world cup match that he had his infamous behaviour) I think he should not be a role model or young people etc etc. I am going to be attacked for this but I stand by it. If any of my nephews behaves like this I ould feel the same. Unfortunately, some people these days seem to regard bad manners as totally acceptable and desirable, for me to quote McEnroe, "it's the pits". I might be called old fashioned or a doddeering old fool that's okay, but I just can't stand bad manners. So, I want him to be taught a lesson, and wo best to give him but Nico.

kidnicky
06-27-2006, 02:27 PM
don't worry dtiger, I know that you don't hate him or anything like that, is just that we didn't know anything about Murray's behavior so that's why we were asking about that, and it's very kind from you that you didn't say the all story about him, or what you saw from him so we're not thinking that you're a bad person or we're not hating Murray .... like you, we only want Nico to win but if he behaves bad today against Nico well I can't say that I'm gonna love him

Hey ditiger! Thanks for the explanation...and I totally agree about showing respect on court. :yeah: All players behave badly now and again - even Gentleman Tim has once or twice - but when its done repeatedly, its not cool anymore.

I'm really going to have to watch Murray more closely - I really haven't watched him that much because I have enough to do following my beloved clay players.

OK - I may get lynched for this....- Boris Pashanski is Serbian and I love him :inlove: He's a really great, fun guy to talk to and a real gentleman. And I am one of the few people on MTF who really doesn't like Agassi - sorry :o - so am I allowed to come here and say AJMO BORIS as long as I cheer for Nico too? Andre will almost certainly win - Boris is a clay court player and he will not win the match  I'm actually surprised he won a set - or even a game - LOL!!!

About Peter Sampras  I didn't like to watch him play but I didn't dislike him as a person - kind of indifferent  whereas Agassi is actually so high on my  list that he beats Coria and Murray :p In fact, when they had that silly thread on GM about all time favourite and least-favourite players - I recall he came second on my "hate" list :o after Jimmy Connors.

Wouldn't do for us all to be the same would it? Variety is the spice of life!!! Thanks for your understanding

Btw - just seen an interview with Andy Murray. He says he will respect Nico because he is a fighter and will "fight til the end", and that he knows he won't be phased by the Centre Court because of his experiences in the Olympics. Andy said he hopes the crowd will "make a lot of noise to support me" and he also says he thinks he will win because it's grass! So come on Nico - prove him wrong :p

I saw that about Brad coaching Murray. :-( It really annoys me because I wanted Brad to coach Fer G. And the rumor at the time was that Brad couldn't coach Fernando because he was too busy with his other commitments. If it really was that Fer wanted Stefanki over Brad, I don't want to know. Because it would really make me loco.
