Mathieu  I am so proud of him today, he fought so hard and was a little unlucky at times. He looked so cute out there I just wanted to hug him

HUGE CONGRATS TO RAFA!!  What a warrior!
Mathieu did have the chance today, but he did not surrender and let him take this match.

That's a big vamos and a huge fistpump for Rafa! :rocker: :bounce:

It will cost him some energy, but in the long term, I think it will only make him stronger.

and of course props to Mathieu for playing such a very high level and keeping that such a long time...

Shame on the people at this match and who booed Nadal after he had won and that they couldn't accept Nadal was better despite Mathieu playing very well. :ras: :o it's seldom I see half of the crowd booing a winner, even if that means he eliminated a home player.

Amazing, possibly the best match of RG so far.

Paulo just choked on very crucial momnets by hittnig easy ues three times at 4-4 in last 3 sets, but overall he is a fighter,he keeps trying to take bps and holds his serve.I like he held the serve by lagging 0-40 in 1st set the most! :worship: And he pumped like Hewitt today, love to see he has passion again! :clap2:

Excellent match but it was so exhausting watching it I can't imagine what it must have been like playing it. These guys must have the cardio-vascular fitness of Sherpas.

I was amazed how Mathieu just hung in there- he never really faded just kept on pounding away. And I guess it shows us yet again how impossible it is to roast a pig in claypot yet again as the intensity of Nadal just never fades. As if there was not enough reason anyway, this match for any player who watched it will have made them even more depressed about the prospect of having to face Nadal.

Congrats to Nadal.

Those two UEs in his last serve game cost Mathieu the match. Instead of 40:15 the score was 15:40. But despite that, the frenchman played great tennis! BOTH of them. Most points were decided by either winners or forced errors.

Awesome match.

Yes awesome- and a FIVE HOUR match and only four sets played.

Can you imagine if Mathieu would have somehow won the fourth set how long this match would have lasted???

93 minute first set and it didn't even go to a tiebreak

Nadal played great in the first set but Mathieu was too good. If someone played as Mathieu did in the first for five sets they would beat Rafa even on clay. It's just insanely tough to keep it up.

Huge well done for Rafa and Mathieu.

I hope so! But really I can't see Federer getting depressed by watching this match. I would think he'd be encouraged. Federer, I am sure, believes he is a far, far, far superior player to PHM, and if PHM could give Nadal trouble, Federer must feel very confident. Well, he said he was confident about being able to beat Nadal anyway since he came so close to doing so in Rome and really should have won that match.

This was a fantastic match. Mathieu played out of his mind. I was extremely impressed with his game - he really took it to Nadal and controlled Nadal's wicked spin extremely well.

In the long run you just knew that Nadal would wear him down. Beating Nadal in a best of 5 set match is a daunting task. Mathieu would have needed the second set for me to believe that he could do it.

Had this been a best-of-three set, then Mathieu would have had a real chance the way he played today.

The mental strength of Nadal is mindblowing - he just never seem to take a mental break. He's there from start to finish and seemingly doesn't know of nerves.

what a match!!!

by far the best match i've seen this year in RG.
PHM played unbelievably but Rafa was just too good and played exceptionnally too (that forehand passing in the last set!!  ) ....and he had to.

the only negative thing in this match was the crowd.....what a disgrace!
to be fair i was not proud to be french at some moment.

:worship: PHM. He stood up to pressure and was very brave throughout the match.

:worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: Nadal

He beat the crowd and PHM. I think it's obvious he's feeling the pressure of "the streak" and of defending. But he battled through. He's a great player.

6 hours and 35 minutes to be precise. Fabrice was the victor on this occassion.

I think had Mathieur somehow found a way to win the fourth set that record could well have been threatened

Actually it was the French- first round in 2004:

http://www.atptennis.com/en/players/headtohead/head2head.asp?player1=Santoro%2C+Fabrice&player2=Clement%2C+Arnaud&playernum2=C487

You might be thinking about Clement beating Grosjean in the AO in 2001 in the semis which was also quite a long match but nowhere near as long as this one.

PHM was really impressive today, he has a nice game. He hung in there with Nadal the entire match, but in the back of my mind I knew that Nadal would win it.

It was a great match, but Nadal never seemed completely comfortable. I don't think he is playing at his best quite yet. I hope his match with Hewitt tomorrow, gets him playing a bit better.

Good job to both players!

The difference between the Santoro-Clement match, and the one today is that:
-Santoro-Clement was spread onto two days (interrupted by the night, which is not surprising)
-The violence&power of the shots wasn't the same, to say the least

I think today may be the record for a 4 set match?

Ditto what everyone else said.

This was the first time in a long while where I could see the strain of success and the pressure to defend his title and clay streak finally weighing on Nadal's shoulders. He actually looked and played tired towards the end of the match. He wasn't nearly as exhuberant here as in past matches. Gone is the "kid-in-the-candy-store" look in his eyes. Will be interesting to see how he performs in his next matches.

PHM was very impressive, he really took a lot out of Nadal. I didn't know he had it in him. An excellent effort. :hatoff:

That was a fantastic match!
Nerve wrecking, but great. :worship:

I was really impressed with Paulo today. I was expecting a tough match (given their previous matches) but not like this. I though that he would get tired in the second set or the third set but he simply did not back down and kept up the pressure all the way through. He will get quite a bit of confidence out of this, I think.

The French public was annoying really. Well, if I take away anything good from that it is that Rafa has proven for himself once again that he can handle a tough crowd.

Happy birthday, Rafa. You showed your fighting skills once again.

Nadal beats Mathieu in marathon slugfest

Rafael Nadal is through to the fourth round where he will face LLeyton Hewitt after completing a gruelling four set victory over Paul-Henri Mathieu 5-7 6-4 6-4 6-4 on Philippe Chatrier court this evening.

The contest which lasted 7 minutes short of 5 hours will surely go down as one of the longest four set matches since the tiebreaker was introduced back in the mid 1970ís.

To the delight of the French crowd, Mathieu took the opening set after breaking Nadal in the twelfth game after saving 5 break points at 5-5. The Frenchman was striking heavy blows through the Spaniardís defences with his penetrating drives off both wings, which kept Nadal on the run, often at full stretch.
With a single break of the Mathieu serve in the fifth game, Nadal took the second set with the match already in progress for two hours plus.
This war of attrition seemed to be just warming up at this point as both men locked horns in a fight to the death.

Nadal broke Mathieu to love to go 3-2 up in the third set, but the Frenchman broke straight back. At 4-4 Nadal got another break as Mathieu netted his forehand. As the clock read 3 hours 45 minutes, the defending champion went two sets to one up as Mathieu went wide on his backhand.

When Nadal broke Mathieu in the fifth game of the fourth set, it seemed as if the fight would be over in a matter of minutes, however, with the support of the raucous crowd, the Frenchman broke straight back to the Spaniardís dismay as he sent his forehand wide.
Nadalís displeasure did not last long though as he engineered a break of serve at 4-4 with his astonishing retrieving forcing the Frenchman into error on his forehand.
A Nadal ace set up two match points, which he converted at the first opportunity when Mathieu under pressure deep on his baseline, sent his chipped backhand long.

Both men received a standing ovation. It seemed cruel that someone had to lose such an enthralling match.

"I had a lot of chances in the first set, but he played very good", said Nadal. "I was thinking that he would stop, but he played a very good match."

Mathieu also reflected on his chances afterwards;
"I think I had my chances. I think he played good for a few games each tme at the end of the sets. He deserved to win today."

Paulo really has a bunch of heartbreaking losses at RG in the last few years: Agassi in 2002 after leading 2 sets to love, Canas in 2005 after having 2 match points, Nadal this year after playing 5 hours of incredible tennis. I wasn't surprise to see him nearly crying on the court after this one...

Hope one year he'll have a really good run here and make his way to the draw. He's got the talent, and it would be a revenge for all these awful losses.

Vamos Rafa!!! Congrats on the win. U didn't play ur best but u still came out on top. :)

Rafa wasn't allowed to play his best. He played as well as he could've done today, I don't think this was at all a case of rafa playing poorly and letting Mathieu take a set this was a case of Mathieu outplaying Rafa in the first set and pushing him close the rest of the way. Rafa played as well as he has played this year in my opinion.

This was not what Nadal wanted. 5 hours in the 3 rnd, next match will be against hewitt, even if Nadal wins you don`t win against Hewitt without struggels, very much possible that the match can reach 3.5 - 4 hours and that will make damage on Nadals stamina. After that he may face Blake and Blake has Rafa`s number even if nadal still is favorite in clay but it can be a hard match there too. I mean Rafa plays a physical game and if he plays long matches back to back it can hurt him in the Final if he reaches it.

A great match, many :clap2: for both players. Congrats to Rafa for prevailing through winning the crucial break in the 4th. Paulo showed the perfect game plan to bring down Rafa on clay, i was especially impressed at how he would consistently use sharp-angled backhands to drive Rafa wide on the forehand size taking charge of the point. The level of execution required in a best of 5 match is incredibly high.

He did well. Wish he hadn't gotten tight at 4-4 in the third and fourth sets though. :(

Agree. I thought Paulo deserved the 1st set and Rafa the 2nd, the 3rd was a coin flip with both playing equally well but Paulo should have won the 4th. However i cannot realy criticize him much in this case, the level of execution required was extremely high.

OMG!!! What a match. I'm so proud of PHM. He gave it his all. He had his strategy all worked out and stuck to it. It almost worked. Simply fabulous match to watch. Rafa was even forced to hit a few winners himself which is nice to see. Didn't like Rafa's gamesmanship with the banana incident but I don't really think that is the reason PHM lost so I won't harp on about it especially considering that he got what he deserved from the french crowd at the end of the match.
