Nadal chokes on a banana against PHM

Serving for the 3rd set and up 15-0, Nadal calls timeout and says that he has a piece of banana stuck in his throat.

I am sure there is a joke here somewhere. :)

I just found this guy has too many excuses to take time-out,and he did it many times during games, such as in Madrid against Vincy,in Montreal against Moya and now this. I'd rather support Federer to win FO now! :)

You really stick with your players, don't you?

This was posted in Rafa's forum:
Nadal was interviewed by Alex Corretja at the end of the match and asked him about what happened when he was talking to the doctor.
Nadal said he choked on a banana he ate :p and he couldn't breath... and he said: " I was choking on the banana  and they whistled at me, the bastards... hahaha."

That was funny.

I envy you you didn't see it. It was so nerve-racking, he just stopped play at 15 all and called for the trainer and no one had any idea what was going on, he was pointing to his throat and a banana skin and sort of gasping. Needless to say, I almost had a heart attack.

I didn't see he has a choking problem. I watched that on stream and he was ok.Also as people said he was even smiling and talking to the trainer,he just sat down and interrupted the rhythm.I'm talking about the gamesmanship, what's more he did it during games not only once! :spit:

I totally agree. Because he so totally needed to call a time out when he was serving and three points from the set, since clearly his opponent was on the verge of something great and needed to be distracted. That wily bastard needs to be banned. For serious.

If I'm not wrong,you liked him before,right?

I do remember he called this time-out at 15-15 (after Paulo took a point! ) My point is...one match acts like that is ok,but he did have a very bad record before,I liked him when he played against Federer, but even I don't like Federer winning too much,I can't accept this kind of gamesmanship much more! You're right,he should be banned!

there's something I don't understand... He said he choked on a banana hmmm...ok, but when you choke while eating you don't go on the court and you don't play two points with a banana in your throat

It was a little bit weird, but maybe he needed to sit down and drink something, and be reassured by the doctor.
PHM didn't make a problem out of it and you can't say any player's rythm was broken by it.
So no problem.

From the official site:
The match included a bizarre interruption with Nadal serving for the third set at 5-4, 15-all. He ran to his seat and sat down, waved a banana peel at the chair umpire and pointed to his throat and seemed to be on the verge choking.

"I don't know what happened, but it suddenly stayed stuck halfway through," Nadal said.

"I didn't really notice it at the beginning. At 15 love, I started being a little bit frightened. But I didn't want to stop in the middle of the game. I didn't think it would look very good. I lost the next point. I was paying more attention to my throat than to tennis. It was an important game, so I started being nervous. It's not that I couldn't breathe, but I did feel a very strange sensation. I thought, I've got to stop because I don't want anything serious to happen. Never mind if I don't look good."

But after he took a few slugs of water and conferred with a trainer and a doctor, he resumed play and eventually wore Mathieu down.

Its amazing that so much attention is being paid to someone having a piece of food stuck in their throat.

Happens all the time. Not on court, but who really give a sh*t about a few moments of not playing.

Obviously not gamesmanship because he had the momentum serving for the set.

Okay- personal experience.

I am hypoglycemic . Until that was diagnosed when I was 20 and working for the 1996 Olympics I used to faint all the time at work (feel free to make fun.) Anyhoos when I was a wee bit older I was at a presentation for my graduate paper in the SW. I ate a bit of bagel right before I presented my paper so I wouldn't faint. I can't eat fast- it locks my throat- but I did anyway. After about the first paragraph of my intro (where I could talk btw) I asked for a time out so I could clear the block of food in the back of my throat, it was bugging and I was getting beads of sweat and worries even though I can talk.

I ended up winning first prize for the compettion, but my friends told me that folks thought I used the "time out" to get sympathy. Maybe you all do too. Feel free to call me a pig or say I used gamesmanship, but that was not the case. This was just an illustration of food being caught but not preventing you to talk, I expect others to make fun of me or say I was lying, but it did happen.

well I don't really think Rafa was faking, but I am not the type to accuse a player of faking anyway :p

but I still can't help but laugh at the fact that he got banana caught.... bagels, I can understand because they're chewy and dry. Any kind of bread product I can understand. but a banana makes me laugh. I don't mean to laugh at Rafa, but i just cannot help it in this case lol..... for me it's the fact that it was a banana that blows my mind

I saw the incident on NBC. They showed a replay of the moment when he
was getting up after the changeover and it looked like he was eating a piece
of that banana in a big hurry. Maybe it didn't go all the way down and he had
some kind of reflux

In any case, I can't imagine that he could come up with such a bizarre
excuse to take a break while serving for the set !!!

It's actually very common, especially in long matches. Bananas contain potassium, which helps against cramping.

Oh, I see. Thank you for clarifying that. He eats with his right hand and plays with his left, so he can pull this off. He'd better be carefully about slipping on banana peels, though.

You must be referring to JohnnyMac's comments about Nadal having a sore throat. JMac thinks *everybody* is an actor. As soon as a player starts to look a little piqued JohnnyMac gets on him, "Give him an Oscar!" Nothing personal. Nobody's safe from PMac.

But I agree that MaryC needs to find another diet other than Roger's ass.

Bananas have that rindy stuff from the inside of the peel that can get caught in your throat. It's like having something in your eye... it might be tiny, but you will be unable to concentrate or do anything else until you fix it.

This incident may give the purée industry a boost! ;)

I've just realised the tense of the thread title could lead one to think that Nadal had choked TO DEATH on a banana.

It's surprising this mistake was made by an english speaker, but not so much so by an American.
