Played one clay court match in 2 years coming into this tournament and finds himself in the 4th round

Business as usual from Hewitt, moved Hrbaty around in the 2nd and 3rd sets at will and Dominator just ran out of gas in the end, which is understandable after his early rounds.

c'mon :smoke:

Well played Hewitt. He seems to be at his best possible to face Nadal. Hasn't broken a sweat in this tournament yet

:yeah: Unfortunately, they didn't show anything on French tv. But the Stepanek-Benneteau stuff is quite entertaining!

WHat I like the most is that Hewitt is playing aggressive tennis and served very well today :hearts: I am so happy to see him winning matches.

Good luck in your next round Legs :yeah:

Well Done Lleyton! :yeah: Done really well to get to the 4th round here after the injury and lack of clay matches since 2004. Likely to play Nadal now and I think he'll like the challenge. Absolutely no pressure for him in that match up. Go Rocky

Hehe good one. Today he probably wore a red shirt.

Anyways, yeah for Lleyton! :yeah: I was betting on a 3:1 win but that was purely optimistic coz I was actually expecting a typical 3:2 Hrbaty win.

So next match is either Hewitt against the crowd/PHM or Nadal. Looking forward to it. :)

This will be the first time in a very long, long, lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng, time I will be behind Hewitt in match;(I really hate to say this but) good luck hewitt in your match against Nadal. Who here thinks Nadal is not going to win against Paul. I guess the beat way to justify this is that the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

Oops, I didn't even catch this thread and arrogantly posted my own Hewitt post :( lol

But I wonder if Hewitt vs. Nadal on clay is a better fighter's chance than Hewitt vs. Federer on, say, hardcourt...

I think Hewitt may get closer to Nadal here than he's gotten to Fed in a while (although he did take a set off him last time) just because... well, it's clay!!!

And on second thought, Nadal is about to win like his 1834704th straight match on the dirt.

Zero surprise that he was able to roll him. That was vintage Hewitt actually. This bodes well for Hewitt making a resurgence on grass and hardcourts if his mind in on tennis which it seems to be. Strong first serve, attacking when he got the chance...the quick courts helped him out as well.

No surprise here! Hrbaty is just a weaker and similar version to hewitt in some ways I guess, plus without the mental strength of hewitt. I thought lyeton had made a bad decision about not playing much, but he seems to be doing quite well! I never expected him to get this far.

I don't remember this kind of stats from Hewitt, let alone on clay!

Apparently he was working hard when we all thought he couldn't care less about tennis anymore ;)

I don't think he can beat Rafa, but he could give him yet another extremely tough match.

Can someone who knows a lot about Hewitt (and tennis in general) explain to me this whole Hewitt on grass and Hewitt on clay business? I mean, just looking at him I would assume he would do way better on clay than on grass. I don't see what exactly stops him from being a major force on clay?

No surprise here... Hewitt's consistently finds himself in the second week here. Regardless, good that he's back, so to speak.

he was brought up on Grass..
also clay is not all about how you hit your FH and BH, alot is about movement.
he's just better on grass/faster courts.

and he's very good on clay anyways, but not/or ever been what id ever call a major force.

A lot of it is his relative lack of power, his dislike of having to generate his own pace, and his relatively flat strokes. Also, Lleyton has traditionally had trouble returning balls that bounce at shoulder height (which Moya successfully exploited in many of their matches). And I also think that a lot of it is just a lack of experience and confidence on clay. He managed to do well on grass very early in his career, and that gave him the confidence to continue to play well on that surface, while the opposite happened on clay.

But you're right that a compact, quick baseliner with very consistent groundies who loves to grind out matches and who has loads of stamina should be better on clay than he is.

End of the day, playing on clay is an art in itself, you need to know how to move on the surface - might sound easy but if you were not brought up on the surface it becomes very tricky to master. And then there is the matter of speed of courts, the quicker the court, the better it is for Hewitt.

I picked Hrbaty but congrats to Hewitt. Despite a long ago semi Hrbaty is no clay courter. Lleyton's flat ball will sit up and look as big as watermelon's to even an off form Nadal. I doubt it will even be close but you never know.

Well played Lleyton and he can beat Hrbaty anytime, anywhere and Lleyton doesn't move well on clay, but when he has lost at RG in recent times he hasn't lost to duds.
