For set and a half Nalbandian looked kinda of shellshocked by how well Tursunov played.. Looked very surprised, looked at some shots going past him in disbelief.. He really seemed to come expecting a walk in the park.. But the feeling is that now Dave is getting it together..

Nalby is not working the angles. He is playing just left and right pretty much and with the court playing as fast as it is, it seems pretty much like a hardcourt. Add to that the liability of Nalby's serve, especially the second and you can see why he is annoyed. He needs to settle down and grind this win out.

Serve stats for Dmitry so far:

1st serve 39 of 58 = 67 %
1st serve won 31 of 39 = 79 %
2nd serve won 15 of 19 = 79 %

Add 27 winners against 14 for David and you know David is in big trouble

Nalbandy doesn't seem to appreciate the way the crowd is treating him, either. After his latest tantrum, which ocurred after he dumped his serve at 5-6 in the 2nd, he busted another racquet, and the crowd really jeered him. Dmitry was awarded a point to start the 3rd.

David's mental strength is hardly poor when he came back from 5-6 0-30 against Federer in the 5th set and has pulled off many other great comebacks..it is just that in many matches when he has a huge lead he loses focus a bit too early or something like this.

His mentality is only a weakness in as much as he is not as much focused on the sport as Nadal or Federer for instance.
This is another example...When the pressure is on at 5-4 David serves out easily..but at 5-2 40-0 he lost focus..

Get a clue.

He is mentally weak, but his talent makes up for that deficiency against most players. My honest view is that David will end his career with at most 2 Grand Slams, but most probably won't win even one....and his talent deserves much more.

His mentality and serve are too weak, when it really matters.

You conveniently ignored all the points referring to his losses in Majors.

Lets look at last year.

Aus Open: lost to Hewitt after coming back from 2-0 down and putting himself in a position to win the match. (QF)

French: lost to the impressive Hanescu.

Wimbledon: Hammered by Tojo when he was most people's favourite. (QF)

US Open: Demolished by Federer. (QF)

And lets not forget the first slam of this year, where he bottled it countless times against Baghdatis.

Nalbandian loses more big matches than he wins...that is simply a fact whether you like it or not. He is mentally weak...that is another fact whether you like it or not.

betterthanhenman
06-02-2006, 06:11 PM

Mental weakness and serve. I have always said those two aspects of his game will hold him back, primarily his mental weakness though. His serve gets worse when he needs it to hold up in tight matches. That is another sign of his mental weakness.

More recently, look at Rome. Federer was tougher mentally. That is why he won the match.

Aren't we lucky to have a psychiatrist here on MTF.

In my opinion, at the USOpen and Wimbledon he was simply outplayed by a better player on that day..At RG David played horribly..I saw the match and he was making countless errors, it was the worst I have ever seen him play..David was going through a very rough time having lost 1st round at Rome and Hamburg..

The AO semifinal definitely was somewhat of a "choke" by David even though he claimed that he couldn't serve as well as he usually does, because of an abdominal injury...impossible to know how much it affected him.

He hasn't got the strongest mind, but I can think of some who I'd much rather call "mentally weak" than David.

I also agree with whoever said that he has improved quite a bit mentally (when compared to 2003 or 2004).

I am a psychiatrist.

I never suggested Nalbandian would change anything according to what I think. But he doesn't need me to tell him that his mentality is a weakness. I am sure he is more self-aware than that.

If you don't care, then don't respond...
The need to analyse him, is what I don't get. Specially coming from a stranger.

But you're right, what you think or write changes nothing and it's not important to me or to anyone. Means what it means : nothing. So, chau.

Oh dear.

Anyone of intelligence analyses what they see. If you don't analyse people and events around you, then that reveals a lot about you.

What I think changes plenty. People can be held in hospital against their will according to what I think. And I wonder how many people travel and pay to listen to what you have to say about them and their lives. Am guessing 0.

It's spelt ciao.

I do it for myself, I don't feel the need to show off to the others just so they know how damn clever and inteligent I am.

But hey, you don't need to prove you're amazing, I can tell that. You're better than Henman after all aren't you? Hmmm, right....that reveals a lot about you.

My analyses, I keep them to myself or share them to the ones I care.

And darling, in Italian it's Ciao. But I am not Italian. I know how it is spelt in my own language. But thanks for trying to teach me what I already know.

The whole post was laughable but this part in particular. You judge people according to their chosen screen names.

If you had kept quiet, I would never have known the depths of your ignorance. Thanks for sharing...

And you make judgements of a player that you don't even know. Just because you post in a message board, that doesn't give you the right to trash him. But you know, you're funny, your predictions of David's future are hilarious, in a silly kinda way that is.

Oh and there's no need to insult me, you know nothing about me.

I would never keep quiet when the subject is someone I care. Never.

Silly, silly, silly...

If I had been singing the praises of your favourite player, then you would have had no problem with me 'making judgements.'

Unless you are a close friend of David's, then we can add hypocrite to the words that describe you. Sycophant would be another...

Why couldn't you?

I am the first to criticize, when he deserves. But in David's case, and if you have seen today's match, he tryed. You can't take that from him. And he won in the end. And THAT is what really matters.
So I don't see the point in coming here saying that we will only win 2 slams, that he is this, that he is that. Pointless and a bit irrelavant.

And why do you say we?

I said we cos i just meant people on the forums.

No-one doubts that david tries (i hope :( ) but if this is what bth thinks then i think he can say it. All he was saying was that he was too weak mentally to challenge Fed and Nadal. That is ok to say, it is wrong, but ok.

Don't think i'm ganging up with him, we're the nalby fans, we should stick together

When I post here, I do have nothing better to do.

The fact is, the majority of the time...I have much better things to do than post here. I wonder if the same can be said of you.

Again, your only problem is that I have criticised a player you like. I bet David himself would accept the criticism as legitimate. It's only the nutty stalkers that object to valid criticisms.

I have bigger problems than that, obviously.

Don't bet anything on David.

You would never say that on his face, mostly because he wouldn't even give you chance for it.

Nalbandian's losses in Slams since '02.

Aus '02: Ferreira 2nd round
French '02: Safin 3rd round
Wimbledon '02: Hewitt final
US '02: Sargsian 1st round

Aus '03: Schuettler QF
French '03: Coutelot 2nd round
Wimbledon '03: Henman 4th round
US '03: Roddick SF

Aus '04: Federer QF
French '04: Gaudio SF
US '04: Youzhny 2nd round

Aus '05: Hewitt QF
French '05: Hanescu 4th round
Wimbledon '05: Johansson 4th round
US '05: Federer QF

Aus '06: Baghdatis SF

Ok, first of all that is an amazing record. Nalbandian is incredibly talented and performs consistently on all surfaces as we all know.

However, the sad fact is that Nalbandian 'lets it go' at some point in a disappointing fashion in most Grand Slam tournaments. And I disagree with people who think that his size is not a hinderance. He does not lose focus as some suggest. He mentally fatigues during matches, which often reveals a hidden physical fatigue.

Nalbandian has a talent comparable to Federer or anyone else playing on the tour. Yet David will not achieve similarly great things in my opinion, due to his weak mind, poor serve and to a lesser extent, excess weight.

None of the above means that I hate him.

Federer is very complimentary about those he beats, but slightly begrudging when speaking after defeats.

With Federer winning 5 of the last 6.

Compare that to losing 5 out of 6 against Nadal.
