Great win Novak :worship:

I was hoping he would put up a good fight, but i never really expected him to win, considering that Gonzalez has been in great form this clay court season.

He was doing great until the third set where Gonzalez considerably stepped it up and began shattering the earth with that forehand
In the fifth Novak did some amazing shots and Gonzalez wasn't all that good.

The rain delay was very annoying but if the result of the match makes it up for me.

Feña  . I like him to, good luck next year and i hope he can continue his good form.

I disagree, I think it's a great draw for a 3rd round match..He could have had O.Rochus, Stepanek, Verdasco or Martín just to name a few players from his half who would give Novak much more trouble. :)

Lets face it, djokovic is great coming player, but still he is much better on faster surfaces then on clay.
This year he won only one match on clay, till RG.
And he faced one of strongest players on clay.
And if gonzo can do something on GS he can do it only on RG, and did he?
This is his biggest loss on clay this year, and he lost to weaker (much) on CLAY i mean.
Thats why..
or prove me otherwise..

Novak had bad losses in Barcelona and Rome but he pushed Federer to 3 tough sets in MC and let's remember last year his match against in form Coria and double bagel on Ginepri. There is no reason why he should not succeed on clay as he is very quick and has all the shots , especially since his fitness issues seem to be behind him

surface is a BIG factor, really BIG.
and if you have slower clay like here in RG, it must be a factor.
Oh and i forgot, in matches where you have to win 3 sets, usually quality showes, and better player wins..
But you must be an idiot after coming back from 0:2, to 2:2, have BP, and then lose 6:1 in last set.. Djokovic played very well, but even federer doesnt have ability to come with easy win in fifth set (6:1) over claycourt expert.

Ok....don't really want to get into anything here but I can't just let that slide....Fernando didn't get to where he is now (#9) by being a tier 2 player. I agree with your general thesis that Gonzalez is a better clay-courter on a consistant basis, and that clay should not be Novak's best surface. Gonzalez was the favorite for a reason. Obviously the clay makes a difference, but not as much as in the Gicquel/Kiefer match, which seemed to me like a more "typical" clay court match. Feel free to disagree.

Even Clement pushed federer to play 3 sets, and some weaker players last year, so lets not call that a factor, or some argument.
What a surprise to bagel Ginepri (anywhere)....and OMG on clay, even bigger surprise...
Coria isnt IN FORm, for much longer than last year when djokovic won.

Some day he does has capacity to be great player on any surface, but for now his play is more suited for faster surfaces and not for slower clay, where he won over specialist on clay..

No?
so we will count only last year?
and this year? what did he achieve on other surfaces? Vina del mar (clay) lost to massu (homecrowd), montecarlo, and rome ( he came as far as he could till he met nadal and federer) s,a nd r16. And only loss hamburg against Verdasco (i saw that match, verdasco played really great after long time).
So what did he achieve on other surfaces?

Last year: he won Auckland(hard) Vina del mar (clay) amersfoort (clay),and won Basel ( carpet)

Year before: Vina del mar(clay)

His other good results are on slower hard, or hard ( which can be similar to clay). ON really fast surfaces yes he has 1/4 of wimbledon, and maybe couple 1/4, 1/2, of faster surfaces.

Does that make him typical allround player or more claycourt specialist.

And if we are going to talk about type of play, his style of play ( playing 1,2,3 meters behing baseline, isnt style for wimbledon, indoor and really fast surfaces..

I never said James Blake was a tier one guy. I like James obvi, but don't put words in my mouth.
No one is saying you did. Don't put words in our mouths either. However the implication of your logic is that James Blake is a second tier player. Do you agree with that?

Yeah you only have 4 kinds of surfaces.. (basic).
and 40,8% on one out of 100%...hey that is not so much..

But how many tournaments on grass and carpet? How many tournaments on clay and hard?

Also Ljubicic has not won a MS or passed a QF either..
Davydenko has reached a SF at a GS but he really doesn't seem like top 10 quality either.
Robredo did win a MS, but does anyone really think of him as a top 10 player?

ANd if those are the people Fed and Nadal are beating in order to win all these tournaments, perhaps they are not legitimate top 10 players either? :-)

Santana
06-01-2006, 06:53 PM
Let's see. He won tournaments on har court, on carpet, on clay and reached QF of Wimbledom (losing to Federer). If that's not an all round player, I don't what it is.

HE won ONE tournmanet on carpet
ONE 1/4 GS grass, ONE on HARD ( maybe i am wrong)...
that makes him typicall allrounder??

i never said he cant win on other surface like volandri, but still, you look if at the same time there is tournament on HARD, CARPET, or CLAY, he will pick CLAY (mostly).
So thats shows what he think, and where he feels better...

It means that more than half of his points come on other surfaces. That seems to speak for itself. Compare that to other "clay court specialists" and the point will be clear.

Nadal 59.9% on clay
Gaudio 53.8% on clay
Acasuso 67.8% on clay

You're right actually, Nalbandian is the only guy I consider to be able to beat those two guys.

Tier one, tier two, the point is Gonzo sucks. He's mega inconsistant and his career shows that. ;)

Nadal 59.9% on clay
Gaudio 53.8% on clay
Acasuso 67.8% on clay

Lets see Gaudio, Acasuso, are almost CLAY court ONLY players, i didnt say that for gonzo!
I didnt say he can only win on clay, but that clay is his home surface, and his he has best results on them, says enough. Not %....
Nadal can anyone beat him on that surface?? even federer cant so that % is also not realistic..

Like i said, Fenas type and style of play suits (most) clay, and results shows that, that makes him more claycourt player than djokovic, and many others.
He is better on claycourt than on any other surface, so does that make him claycourt specialist??
Eod ....

One of the cases where statistics can be misleading, the sheer amount of points Rafa made on clay last year would designate him as a "clay court player". A better way to think about his effort is that he had 52 of his 89 matches on clay last year, and went 29-8 on his non-clay matches where he had 2 TMS titles and a TMS final.

More than 3 wins to every defeat. That's reaching the Semi Final in most tournaments. Throw in the fact he had a couple of early defeats in the grass court season and overall you've got a pretty good record.

Let's hear it from Fernando
Another 19-year-old, Novak Djokovic of Serbia-Montenegro, pulled off the day's biggest upset, eliminating No. 9 Fernando Gonzalez 6-4, 6-1, 3-6, 4-6, 6-1.

Gonzalez said he'd never faced an opponent who maintained his intensity so consistently for so long.

"He was all over me. I've never seen anything like it," said Gonzalez, who hits the ball as hard as anyone on tour. "I just tried to stretch the game out, because I didn't think he could keep playing like that for long."

You really feel that Novak is starting to pull the strands of his game together now and use them to great effect more consistently. Compared to Monfils, Murray and Gasquet he's been a bit of a late starter but you can see him pegging them back and perhaps overtaking them soon if he can put together more performances like that week in week out.

I like his progress and the fact that he lost many matches that he should have won will make him learn how to win later on. Let's not forget that he is still the youngest player in the top 100 so he is still very young
