KIEFER TALKS DIRTIER

Whilst Sharapova was fairly restrained in her choice of colourful language, Nicolas Kiefer let himself go completely on court, and will be lucky to get away with just the one warning he received during his epic five-setter against Marc Gicquel.

The German took an instant dislike to one of the line judges on Court number two, ultimately launching a spectacular verbal volley - containing at least two words that are entirely unsuitable for this column - at the official.

And then, just as the crowd did not think it could get any worse, the controversial thirteenth seed spat in the judge's direction to show displeasure at one particular decision. His action won him a warning, but it was his final misdemeanour - aiming a shot at an innocent ball-girl - which most shocked onlookers.

Amazingly, there was no apology forthcoming from Kiefer after the match, indeed his only explanation on being questioned over the incidents being, "Did I do that? That's me."

Only time will tell if he will be punished retrospectively, but here's hoping he will be.

There was no news of the ball-girl's wellbeing.

Nice.

Just wondering... do tournament volunteers have to sign some kind of form, regarding 'any injury that may be sustained over the duration of the tournament...' blah blah... not responsible... blah blah..?

Could be a wrong interpretation. Most players are spitting on court, you can always say it was in this or that direction.

There was no news of the ball-girl's wellbeing.

It's ridiculous how the author (is it KB#1?) writes "innocent" ball-girl to make Kiefer look like a criminal. Then he writes "no news on the wellbeing" - how ridiculous is that? Is her life in danger or what?

The facts are that you couldn't see that on TV and that Kiefer only has to pay 1.500 $ for shouting at the linesman.

On the other hand, this isn't even news, we know how Kiefer can be

Right.I have seen many times esp on clay! :o The only difference is he is the player that many people dislike, when he did one thing "wrong", (I don't think spitting is too wrong, just don't like it! ) it lets people specially emphasize it. :nerner:

Well there was that deal with kiddie Edberg and the old linesman...my favorite Tennis shocker story.

Kiefer this and Kiefer that - sorry but I think Kiefer is fairly negligable in the grand scheme of things so his antics shouldn't worry anyone.

The occasional good run here or there but he's too mentally brittle to really kick ass on a regular basis and win tournaments.

This is a good of a place to post this as anywhere here- but this comment about Keifer by a poster on Television Without Pity made me laugh and laugh. We were discussing the conflict between the physical attributes of Keifer versus the crazy.

I'm definitely seeing the dichotomy of the abs v. derangement. He looks like he does a lot of sit ups . . . in a van down by the river. Definitely intriguing though.

WHen has he behaved well?

Kiefer is one guy I can imagine winning a tournament and telling the tournamnet director or whoever is handing out the trophy to fuck off as he takes possession of the trophy because something about the guy teed him off. ;)

Well even if some may complain about the word 'innocent' there, I doubt the girl had insulted or done something against Kiefer, anyways.

He and many of his fans are delusional. I still can't belive that some of them excused his actions for throwing his racket at Grosjean when he was trying to make a shot.

I watched the whole match and did not see this alleged thing with this ball girl at all. Maybe somebody can give me the score and the set when it happend, I have the whole match recorded and would look it up then to see it myself. Maybe Kiefer mishit any return to a ballgirl at the net and it was interpreted as an intentional attack on the poor little ballgirl  Anyway, it wouldn't change anything for me, but it would be interesting to see prove for that with my own eyes. Better than believing any great stories from writers who love Kiefer so much and who just follow the general trend ;)

Of course he deserves the fine, but this writing style, how dramatic is always put into scene  I really hope the line umpire survived this curse Kiefer threw at him :p

No, he tried to distract Grosjean. And kudos to him, it worked. It was the biggest stunt I've ever seen on a tennis court and somehow he got away with it.
