who is the best athlete?

We know who is the fastest and most powerful. But who is the best athletically.

Consider speed, power, durability, reach, and general athletic ability with regards to all surfaces. Racket skills should not be taken into account.

give reasons as well. it would be more conducive for discussion's sake.

one notable omission : monfils.

There's this Japanese TV show called Sasuke, or "Ninja Warrior" in the U.S. It's an four stage obstacle course that involves a lot of balance, strength, and speed (here's a video of it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCpWkovYXqM)--the commentary is kind of goofy). Anyway, I've debated with a friend which tennis player would most likely be able to do well on the course, and we both agreed that it would have to be Gael Monfils. He's a great athlete and he can do just about anything; his only problems are in his head.

I'm not yet convinced of Monfils's stamina and if we're talking about atheletic ability in tennis then it's a key factor.

So Murray isn't an athlete, despite being one of the best movers on tour and defending better than anyone on a hard court?

And your objection towards Tsonga is just laughable. He's too big, so he doesn't move well? Go watch some of Tsonga's matches. He is very, very quick.

Just because Nadal has that stab backhand on defense doesn't mean he's a greater athlete then Federer. No less then James "Obama" Blake has said Federer is the greatest athlete on the planet.

Why would Nalbandian be a joke? In terms of athletic ability, he shouldn't be judged on his physique. Again, he's one of the best defenders in the world. You cannot be in that class unless you're a great athlete. If you are judging this based on who would win a 100m sprint, Monfils would win hands down, followed by Blake. If you are judging it based on athletic ability as it relates to tennis, Nalbandian is anything but a ridiculous choice.

I'm glad you had enough sense to keep Djokovic out of the poll :yeah:

Monfils is very gifted physically, also Nadal is (he has those arms without even doing weight lifting as I once heard him say).

however, stamina wise, I have seen all of the above spent after long matches and gasping for air/taking long break/kneeling down, but I have never seen Federer like that ever *strikes wood*.

What about Fed pre-'07 is noticeably unathletic?

***

This poll is laughable. Nadal is a fine athelete, but how is he close to winning this poll? Nadal has three main physical attributes that make him different than other tennis players: he is moderately ambidextrous, he has good upper body strength, and he has stamina (and a shoulder that's probably sewn with steel wire). For the last two, go grab 5-10 local gym rats and there you go. Nadal lacks the footwork, balance, coordination, and touch of guys like Fed, the flexibility of Monfils and Djokovic, the size-yet-mobility of guys like Tsonga, Murray, or Del Potro. He is even beginning to be caught in areas of consistency by the likes of Simon and Murray. Ferrer gassed him at USO '07 and Murray at USO '08, and he couldn't play after the '08 Moya match in Chennai. Nadal's game is ugly by a lot of tennis standards and is survival with crude tools. Put a 90in head in his hand and you'll see how many athletic intangibles he possesses. He's a good athlete, no doubt, but arguably the best athlete on tour?

Have you guys even seen Kleybanova? She's perhaps one of the greatest player I've seen for a while. She's got such unique strokes and her running backhand is just drop dead gorgous and FKING DEADLY. The way she jerk/yank her head every hit is pretty much against the law of physics and will evolute the modern game once again. Bang-Bang Combo - Crushing head yanking forehand cross court to get your opponent out of position then a head yanking cross court backhand for a winner, it's equivalent or better than David Nalbandian's. Don't believe me? Check out her Ultra-vision (ultra slow-mo) loop forehand strokes. They're the greatest you'll ever lay your eyes on.

Monfils has a big physical appareance but he's prone to injuries just like Tsonga

the best athlete (IMO) has to be the one that keeps being powerful but doesn't get injured a lot, one that keeps running and running every match and never seem tired

with that conditions, I think I gotta say Roger, Nando, Blake are the best athletes out there ;)

Rafa is incredibly powerful and a great sportsman, but is actually a bit prone to some injuries, specially on his knees and has had to miss quite a few tournaments because of it ;)

Nadal, Djokovic and Monfils are the best athletes because they can do the splits on defense. Fed can't. So in a certain sense they represent the next physical evolution of the game where flexibility in the lower body becomes paramount.

Overall the future of the game is:

6' 1" to 6' 3", great fitness, great lower body flexibility, and great racquet head speed.
