Frankly speaking post match interviews are dumb, the questions are idiotic like:"Are you sad that you lost?"or"What happened today?" and it must really be hard for the players who lost, but the rules are rules and he has to respect them.

Maybe only the winners should be made to attend those interviews? The losers are sometimes too frustrated.
Some of them break rackets, swear on court, swear on themselves...To the point when they down't care that they will lose the next point as penalty. They are THAT frustrated...
You really expect someone like that to attend a post-match interview?

Safin is a serious guy, who isn't always impressed by the press. I imagine how annoying it is for him to go answer all the same stupid questions over and over... Especally after a loss.

Have none of you ever felt like being left alone? You want to be alone, but instead you're forced to go and describe how you feel to the whole wide world.

Honestly, Safin's been strugglnig with his comeback. When he finally gets a chance to prove himself, he draws a pretty dangerous opponent first round. Then he blows it. I woudl be pissed too. Another disappointing early loss, and especially at a Grand Slam too.

these guys are professionals. They handle both wins and losses, and should fulfill their obligations to the sport. Marat has had plenty of tough losses. Being in a sour mood isn't a good excuse. Of course, none of us knows the true story, so lets reserve judgement.

They shouldn't be forced to do these interviews. Fed gets the same questions again and again, it doesn't really bring anything. One interview in a while would be better. Marat is right, he's free after all. This media formated sports get boring with all the PR events and useless conferences... Let the players play and don't force them to do something else, like in the old days... Marat was born 20 years too late !

Why should he attend a banal interview? I don't think this is part of the sport at all, he lost and doesn't want to speak to a bunch of annoying pricks. It doesn't matter how much he earns and whether it's an obligation or not, it's a waste of time and if you don't feel like doing it then why should you.

First of all my age has no bearing on my comment. Wether I'm 15 or 55 the fact of the matter is Marat needs to grow up. He should take the loss like a man and do the damn interview no matter how dumb it is. It's part of his job.

Marat must pay 10 000$ because he didn't give a press conference:

PARIS, May 31 (Reuters) - Marat Safin was fined the maximum $10,000 for refusing to attend a news conference after his first round defeat at the French Open on Tuesday, the International Tennis Federation said.

The Russian former world number one was beaten 6-3 1-6 6-3 6-1 by ninth-seeded Chilean Fernando Gonzalez, his earliest defeat at Roland Garros.

It is the second time Safin has declined to attend a press conference at the French Open. He was also fined $10,000 for skipping one in 2001.

Safin, who missed last year's U.S. Open and this year's Australian Open with a knee injury, has slipped to 53rd in the rankings.

Being an ATP tennis player , like any other job, entails many obligations. There are always side responsibilities in addition to the main one. In this case interviews are a required part of the job. No one dictates to them how they behave in the interview; they are only required to show up and give minimal responses if that is all they want to do.

Considering how lots of people complain that tennis doesn't get the coverage and respect that other sports get in the media; you would think that people would realize what would happen if players were not required to give interviews. Lots of players would just skip out and whatever inadequate coverage the sport is currently getting would be even less. Face it, lots of the headlines come from player quotes in these interviews. And when a player makes a controversial comment, we get more stories and blogs discussing the comments. So these interviews are a necessary piece of the tennis package and players just need to suck it up and go do their job!

Marat did a wrong thing by skipping the interview, but it's not the end of the world. It IS bad for tennis if players don't communicate with press, i agree, but i'd say that a fine of 10k more than substantially covers all the damage that's inflicted, especially if it's done once in 4 years....

People should just chill. Both parties (Marat and ATP) had a reason to behave they way they did.

He should have made that interview, and gave some answers not very polite to the stupid questions of the day.

The thing is that Gaudio is ahead of him after destroying his own shorts in Hamburg. Sure, his refusal in shaking Almagro's hands was very, very entertaining, but Gaudio did something very special, this way he certainly taked the throne.
Safin was amusing complaining like a madness man about line calls yesterday, and throwing his racket, this together with Almagro's case put him close to Gaudo, but he still needs to do something more to get tied with him, and something great to take the lead. :)

RG 2006=Hamburg 2004

Look for the interview and you'll get the answers. Conditions in Paris tuesday were the same as in Hamburg 2004. It felt like it was 5C out there and he just couldn't deal with the weather. Noone claims that Safin can win every match, nobody claims that he is the best, nobody claims that he's consistent. The rating that he does have is this: he's talented and he's a major headcase.
Which one of these do you deny?

Somebody call me a fool for answering this. I'm pathetic. :o
