Safin.... I admired his determination in the final two games of the fourth set, but I wish he would've won.

Gonzalez played amazingly, though. Congrats to him :).

González play amazing tennis today :worship: The best match I've ever seen of him in a long time, well played most of the points, with intelligence and a good tactic game. He deserved to win, he was the best today.

And Marat, you're one of my favorites always... and I know you will come back with all the weapons for the indoor season. But good luck on the grass and hardcourts too ;)

Aww, Safin...big guy, sometimes needs way more patience and stop bamming forehands past Gonzo's head. You do better when you're at deuce than at AD Safin. But despite the score, it was actually a pretty good match. Safin had some great shots and Gonzo was just playing out of his mind. I can't say this was not expected...
Maybe time is what you need to get back on track Marat or randomly you can do well again?
Well regardless, see-ya until Wimbledon Marat :wavey:

Glad he didn't get bageled and he seems fit enough (but movement doesn't seem as good, as other people have said). Commiserations to Safin, anyway, but good job to Gonzalez for his play.

Great win for Gonzalez. He really has stepped up his overall game this year. He certainly has the ability and now with a new coach & confidence maybe the game to get to the top 5.

I'm happy for Fernando and gutted for Marat.

Gonzo played really really well, and Marat put up a fight but he couldn't win against Fernando, the wind, the rain, the darkness and himself.

I hope Gonzo keeps it up, his game is great to watch! :) :yeah:

I am a Safin fan, and I am not really even upset. Safin is getting into a decent form, but he is nowhere near his January 2005 form.. And that's what probably was required today to beat Gonzalez. I watched what ESPN showed, the last two sets, and Gonzo was nearly as fast as Nadal, just like Nadal making no unforced errors at all ( I can hardly remember any ), and hitting about 5 times harder than Nadal.. If Gonzo plays like that - it is lights out, forget about Roger-Rafa... The best clay tennis I've seen anyone play in years.

Safin needed to play all match long the way he tried to play the last two games, when he finally tried to match Gonzo in terms of power. Obviously, he is not ready for that kind of game yet. Yet, I think Safin played very decent match.

Gonzo played a great match - very solid and contained tennis from him apart from in that dip in the second set. Very unflashy, not very wild - most unlike him. But it worked a treat. By staying more patient and consistent, he allowed the erratic play of Safin to get the better of himself.

Nicely done Gonzo. First win over Safin under your belt.

New coach is working :yeah:

Remember, YK won the first very Slam that he played under Stefanki.. And proceeded to reach #1 right away.. Stefanki is a great motivator. Can't wait for Nadal-Gonzo QF.. Expect Gonzo to blow Nadal off the court..

Strangely enough for Gonzo, he was quite patient today and once he saw that Marat was spraying some balls, he waited a couple of shots before trying for the big FH. Marat didn't serve all that well so Gonzo had a chance on just about every serve game it seemed.

safin played well at times
gonzo was more consistent & made some terrific shots
its a pitty thay they had to meet early in the first round
a very good match
safin was unlcuky with a few shots at key moments
gonzo is a very dangerous floater

 vs Nadal or Fed Gonzo has been helpless.
But he is great shape and can go really far this time. He's really improved a lot! :yeah:
I like Gonzo too so he is at least a nice guy to lose to. And it was a pretty decent match to watch indeed. :)
Who's Gonzo's new coach btw? :o

FelipeMIA89

his new coach is Larry Stefanki

Marat is also not match tough at all. So much of silly shot selection. That between the legs shot, while it seemed he had enough time to run three times around the ball before hitting it. Some attempts at serve and volleys.. many awkward dropshots.. A lot of good, crisp hitting though, but not powerful enough and Gonzo played an excellent defence, always looking to counterstrike.

Marat doesn't have enough matches under his belt and hence no confidence. A vicious circle, added to missing fitness. :(

This claycourt season was a writeoff anyway for Marat. The first few months after a major injury is always a struggle and some inevitable minor injuries ( like his ankle ) because the body is out of competing rythm. Remember Agassi's 1998. Or Marat's end of 2003.. It is sad that he could not play more of a perfect condition tennis to get his rythm back before clay, like indoors or normal hardcourts - not a slowish windy shit of IW/Miami type..
