Nadal sets the record as Vilas looks on. Nadal didn't play all that well, but the wind was definitely bothering him. Soderling at times used a very good inside-out BH down the line to set up huge FH's to win some points but wasn't anywhere near consistent enough to really challenge Nadal outside of the second set as he he gave up at the end.

Congratulations on breaking the record Rafa :worship:

A bit shaky in the 2nd, Soderling had points to go 5-2 up. It was pretty windy out there, wasn't the greatest match ever. Soderling hit some great forehands, but Nadal wore him out in the end.

Go on and win the tourney now son :D

^LOL. I was going to post this at 4-1, but held on. Looks like Nadal will receive some sort of award.

Congrats, Nadal! :yeah:

He played below par and still won easily, and set his new and most impressive record so far and it's one he'll likely hold for a loooooong time, though I do think it won't be that distant to Vilas' :p

PS - Great trophy, very original! :)

Congrats Rafa! :D

It wasn't pretty though.

The gusty wind really bothered Rafa, I've rarely seen him so frustrated. It's lucky he toughed out the second set, it could've been much more difficult otherwise. Good fight from Robin in the second, but it was all Rafa in the end. ;)

I found watching Soderling play far more exciting to be honest. Nadal was below par despite the score-line. I feel bad for Robin as he wasted some opportunities. His volleying was shocking today and he was pressing as you have to do against Nadal.
Congrats to Rafa for this achievement. Don't enjoy his style of play, but it is certainly very effective. Don't know how anyone can beat him on the dirt. You can't hit winners and you can't outlast him by grinding.

True. He couldn't slide into his Fh very well when Nadal hit inside-out FH's which always drew weak mid-court replies. He did hit some very nice FH's when not on the run though.

Good job rafa. Credit to him for this, even in horrible conditions he grinds it out.
S÷derling needs to work on his volleys and put aways a bit...
It's a bit frustrating to see how many swedes nowadays struggle with that part of their game.

Well done to Rafa for getting the record - what I hope now is that he can settle down and put all this record fuss behind him and focus fully on the tournament.

His performance today was...well...not too hot, to be frank. Far more erratic than we're used to from Rafa, even with the tricky conditions - it's not like his game is a high-risk game, he doesn't aim for the lines as a rule.

Neither Federer nor Nadal particularly played well in the first round so I hope both will settle and play better in Round 2.

Congrats to Nadal, but I hate the fact that a number 45 ranked player in the world has to play the 2nd seed in the first round. I mean seriously should it be mandatory that the top seeds get qualifiers in the first round.

^^^ Yes, definitely wouldn't call Rafa's performance hot. He seemed very frustrated with the conditions (which were dreadful) and quite nervous. I hope it was just the "first round jitters" and the record thing (and Vilas sitting there and looking daggers at him ;) may have been a little unnerving :p ) and he'll keep getting better now.

Yeah I'd agree with that, he didn't play well at all. It wasn't enjoyable, his backhand wasn't really working, and Soderling was dealing with the topspin well. Soderling hit some cracking forehand winners in the 2nd set, but Rafa did enough to come through, that's all that matters at the moment.

Right. Mats kept saying that Rafa is a good match-up for Robin because Soderling is tall and has much less trouble dealing with Rafa's topspin.

That second set had me worried, so not Rafa to lose a game after saving what...five BPs? I think a lot of Rafa's UEs had to do with the wind though, he can get quite frustrated in such circumstances.

But hey, he's in R2! :yeah:

Mats doesn't like Rafa very much! He always criticises him :o

Yeah the 2nd set was tough, Soderling stepped it up, and he had game points to go 5-2 up and probably would've won the set. Rafa fought well though, he didn't play well and the wind was annoying him so I'm just happy he came through in 3.

I don't imagine he'll have too many problems with Kevin Kim as well :)

Listen to him next time Rafa is playing, he never praises him, he only talks about his limitations. Then watch when Federer is playing, and he'll drool all over him.

he wasnt playing his best, & he really didnt need to
Soderling looks like a very good player, returning from lengthy injury should do better in coming weeks. the swede wasnt consistent enough to bother Nadal
today the wind played havog in the matches
what a smashing record for the spanish teen.
take nothing away from him

Mats is a tennis expect who talks about what he sees from the perspective of a tennis player.

I think the most accurate comment came from his fellow commentator when he described Nadal as a "wall". I think Soderling found this when he kept hitting incredible shot sequences and the ball kept coming back until Soderling missed.

Agree with all who said that it wasn't a pretty match- but I don't think that a pretty match could have been possible in such conditions. Kim's match before was not too nice in the second set as the wind really started to pick up.

Robin does have some very nice aspects to his game (net play of course not being one of them). I can see why such high hopes were placed on him when he was younger. He is still pretty young, so maybe he will start to have the results that people once hoped for. He does have to work on his net play though- at times it seemed like he was wearing oven mits when he went forward.
