Coria out with injury

A major blow for the Heineken Tennis Open.

The tournament's top seed has been forced to withdraw because of injury.

Argentina's Guillermo Coria has pulled out with an abdominal tear.

That means Coria's second round opponent, former champion Dominik Hrbaty from Slovakia, moves through to the quarterfinals without having to lift a racquet.

The young Argentine is also set to miss the Australian Open, starting Monday.

hehe... this is all Kiefers fault, you know :p

That, and he's allergic to Hrbaty. Don't believe me? Check his record against the Dominator. You'll see. Hrbaty cast a wicked spell on him. It's just not right.

At the rate the Argentines are falling from injury, Ferrero's chances of defending his RG title are looking better every day . . .

Seeing as I'm a fan of his, I really wouldn't mind.

Really bad news for Coria. And abdominal tear can pretty bad. Venus had to be kept out of tournament play for about half of year. Not saying they got the exact same kind of tear of course.

Awwww, what a shame. He almost definitely won't be ready for the Australian Open. I'm in shock; he never seemed very injury-prone.

Nalbandian had one during wimbledon and he couldnt play for three weeks.

:bigcry:

A lot of the excitement of the AO has departed for me.

One of the stories concerning his withdrawal from Qatar cited an abdominal strain. Perhaps that was correct.

This is a very serious injury. I hope the tear is small, but still he will have a difficult rehab. I understand the cure for such an injury is nearly complete rest. It can become chonic if not attended to properly.

Maybe he's just afraid of the Dominator :P
He retired against him last year too!
But seriously, I hope Guille gets better soon and the injury isnt too serious. Maybe it was just precautionary so he'd be fit in time for the AO.

A little off topic, but just a ranking question. I know there are no quality points on ATP, so since Guille retired before the match and gave a w/o, does Hrbaty get the same amount of points as he would have if he'd beaten Guille? That wouldnt seem right to me.

I think so - obviously a walkover doesn't count as an official win so it doesn't go down in the match wins column for the year or the head-to-head record, but it enables Hrbaty to progress one round further so he gets CR and ranking points for it. I suppose he's rewarded for reaching the quarter-finals regardless of whether he had to play two matches to get there.
