Schalken exits open

By David Long at the ASB Bank Tennis Centre

The number four seed at the Heineken Open, Sjeng Schalken from the Netherlands, was upset by Spain's Rafael Nadal on court number four on Tuesday evening.

Nadal won the match 7-6 6-4 winning the tiebreak 7-2 which means Jiri Novak is the only seed left in the bottom half of the draw.

After the match Nadal said it was good for him to get the win after a bad run of results recently.

"I have been through a fair amount of losses, I've been through six losses in a row and I'm so happy to win today," Nadal said.

"I felt comfortable like at the beginning of last year."

I was going to post this last night, but figured that you would get around to it, TF ;)

What a way to end his losing streak! Beating Sjeng on a hardcourt surface is one of his best wins yet :)

Very good win, keep them coming Rafa!

:) Sjengster won't be too happy about this loss... and to a Spaniard!! At least it wasn't to Moya! :p ;)

Vamos, Rafa!!

I never saw Rafa play, but he seem very talented.

This isn't really a surprise. Schalken is a consistent baseliner, but I take it Rafael is just better. I always think, even as a Dutchman, that Schalken is highly overrated.

I hardly think Schalken is overrated, no-one's ever suggested that he's a potential world-beater like Nadal. I'm happy that he's ended his losing streak, but aarrgh, did it have to be here and now?

Nadal was on a 6 match losing streak though, so that's something to consider ;)

Yeah, but he had won doubles matches with Tommy lol :) I just don't think the world of Schalken. His play is boring. I mean, he is a nice guy, has a great personality, but I think his ranking is going to drop big time this year.

We shall see... BTW, Robredo's all-forehand style ain't that interesting to me either.

Chloe le Bopper
01-14-2004, 07:27 AM
And he backs it up by beating Ancic in two tie breaks! If I recall correctly, he was down a break in both sets (Ancic actually served for the first set), and down 1-5 in the second set tb :D

LOL Sjengster. I saw Robredo play in Rotterdam, first round match, against Mikhail Youzhny. Now I can guarantee you that it wasn't an 'all-forehand'-show. He had a very versatile game and that is what I liked and still like about him.

My apologies, I obviously overlooked his versatility. ;) But I base my comment squarely on the matches I saw him play at last year's RG against Kuerten and Costa where he was a forehand machine, constantly running round his backhand to pound them. He had something like 25 forehand winners in the first two sets against Costa, but then fell away rapidly... Seriously, I know he has game and is pretty good around the net, but I wouldn't say that someone like Schalken has any more or less ability than him.

I like Schalken more than Robredo, at least Schalken has beaten Roddick.

;)

Sjengster
01-14-2004, 02:24 PM
Just the once Lurker, just the once, but it counts... interestingly enough, in exactly the same tournament that Roddick just handed out his latest straight-sets beating to Robredo, TMS Paris. That was in 2001 and he then beat Kuerten in the next round to reach a Masters Series quarterfinal for, I believe, only the second time. Glory days... although the way he choked away that QF against Vinciguerra was hardly encouraging.

CooCooCachoo
01-14-2004, 02:46 PM
Oh well.. not every match he plays is good :) But also take into account that Tommy is a great personality and just a great player to watch :) Schalken always looks very boring on court, when Robredo is full of emotions.
I don't think you should judge players on whether they have defeated Roddick or not. You would need to take a lot into consideration then, such as physical level, experience and so on. If it were based on like ten matches, I'd accept the theory, but not on just one match. And Robredo will always have a hard time against Andy.. unfortunately!

Sjengster
01-14-2004, 02:51 PM
Of course, of course I understand the emotion and personality differences make him more appealing... I guess it's just a case of different groundstrokes for different folks. Anyway, rest assured that ability to beat Roddick is not the sole criteria for me in liking a player - by that logic I would have to despise Koubek and adore Haas, when that couldn't be further from the truth...

As Kiara said...the next one is Carraz. ;) Go for it!

BTW I don't find Schalken's game boring at all, on the contrary he's very natural and everythings seems so easy for him  is like a male Conchita but without winning Wimbledon... yet :p

Sjengster
01-14-2004, 10:03 PM
A male Conchita? What, with all the relentless slice backhands and suffocatingly heavy topspin and off-pace rallies? Nope, doesn't sound like Schalken to me at all. The one similarity is in the serve - they both tend to knock it in to start off the rally...

Nadal, Hrbaty to meet in Heineken Open final

January 15, 2004
AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) -- Spanish teenager Rafael Nadal reached his first ATP final when he beat second-seeded Jiri Novak in a semifinal match Friday at the Heineken Open.

Nadal, 17, beat the Czech 6-1, 6-3 to earn a place opposite unseeded Slovakian Dominik Hrbaty in Saturday's final.

Hrbaty reached his second consecutive final and remained unbeaten in 2004 by beating Raemon Sluiter of the Netherlands, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in a rain-delayed quarterfinal then ousting defending champion Gustavo Kuerten 6-3, 6-2 in a repeat of last year's final.

The tall and powerful Nadal's aggressive baseline play downed Novak in only 65 minutes. He hit more than 20 clean forehand winners and forced Novak into a series of errors.

Hewitt was quite a bit younger. And a few guys had won slams by the time they were Rafael's age (Becker, Wilander, Chang).

Still... it'd be impressive if he could win tomorrow. He's had a great run either way. Hrbaty is obviously playing extremely well, so...

He'll have to get past a qualie and upset Mantilla first... but yeah, possible third round match up.

I don't imagine he'd win, although that would be nice. I'd like it to happen just to see how well he does against a competitor like Hewitt.
