Yes good effort by Hartfield. A nice match in a way for Federer. Sometimes its good to get a couple of competitive sets in to set him up for matches where he will need to win the big points.

Very nicely done from Diego - certainly made people sit up and take notice.

if he'd handled the pressure points a little better that could have been an even tougher match. As it is, the Argentine's chutzpah and Federer's own below-par performance made it hard work.

Gotta love these young players who come out and just play freely with little pressure - no history with the opponent so nothing to dwell on, just swing and play good tennis. Until those pressure moments.

Still, certainly a good match for Hartfield who will have learned a lot about how to handle the pressure of the big points. Nice workout for Federer. I don't think he'll be entirely happy with his performance, but he did enough to get it done in 3 so he won't be too concerned at this point with the parts of his game that didn't click right into place.

Diego Hartfield seemed like a very nice player but missing just little something extra. It's weird I never heard of him before

Very good performance by Diego, certainly didn't look like cannon fodder. :yeah: Too bad he was running on empty in the third set.
As I said in another thread, he's got a vicious drop shot!

On a shallow note, he's very good-looking too. ;)

Nice job Hartfield , actually it 's a pretty good performance against the NO.1 who has so far been to the driver seat and still lost just a little bit. Federer, thirsty to hear of your game.

truth be told
Hartfield played a great match
his first on the tour, first GS, center court
& no less with the no.1
he did himself very well & gained a few fans as well
Federer didnt start well, but got better
& if his overall game wasnt all that great
credit to Hartfield who only ley go late in the third on coz he was tired

Roger had alot of break chances and couldnt capitalize, he always struggles with guys he has never seen before, i expect his play to be better next round.Everywhere i see the radio message, they said, Roger struggles in the first round.

Federer was in a very bad mood today, very sour looking (more than ussual)

This Diego played some great points, but all in all it wasn't a great match

Federer will need to be more pumped up!

I agree. He's got a good game and showed a great effort today.

Gotta love these young players who come out and just play freely with little pressure - no history with the opponent so nothing to dwell on, just swing and play good tennis. Until those pressure moments.

Diego Hartfield is actually older than Federer (he's 25) so he's not a youngster, but I see what you mean. He, as those youngsters, lack experience and some sort of self-belief in those pressure moments and that's why they hardly come out on top (that excludes Nadal, obviously).

In a way it's nice that Roger got tested already in R1, as he'll prepare his game better for the following rounds and will be more confident.

Congrats, Roger!
Good luck next round!

A win is a win- and besides someone did mention cannon fodder. And according to some Roger is already through to the final to be cannon fodder for Rafa right? ;)

Anyway, good that he got it done in straights. Let's hope he can keep improving because he will need to!

You gotta love RG for this stuff, no other slam we see Roger or any other top player (except Nadal) struggling in the first rounds. Nice match from Diego, I've seen him play (tv) during Bs. Aires Challenger and I thought he had a pretty nice game and I think he's ranked so low because he had injury problems through all his career and he was considered a young talent with potential in his early years but I'm not sure about this ( Can any fellow argentine confirm this) I remember him playing the final against Berlocq and they said something about his injuries.

Did you guys see on the first set Hartfield serving to go up 4-0 and it was AD-Roger and the ump called it in for Fed when it was CLEARLY out ? WTF they can't see if it's in or out

Great Job by Diego!!!

Roger was a bit annoyed he had to play on the Sunday. He'd requested Monday start to his campaign but they refused and let him start today instead. Same with the women's no.4 seed Sarapova. Both would have been livid had they lost. Now Roger has to do it all over again on Wednesday. It will be like a 1st round match after two whole days of doing nothing. No wonder he "struggled" a little today. Focus wasn't there and who can blame him. That said, Hartfield played with a lot of heart out there. I knew he would be threat.

Funnily enough, Hartfield shares the same nickname with Gaudio (el Gato), and not because they look alike, but because of his surname (which resembles Garfield).

Yes obviously he should've taken Karlovic's serve, Gonzo's forehand, Gaudio's backhand, Henman's volley,...

I like this Diego already! He played great considering it was against Roger, the NO.1 player, and it is his first time playing in the pro's. I'd say he faired a lot better than many of the top 20 players could have. I hope to see more of this guy, he's quite talented, and good looking too.

And well . . . Roger, good job, you won the match. That's all that matters.

Haven't you heard? To increase tv revenue, the FFT now has the final played twice. The second final will be on the new "Third Monday."

This is what Diego said after the match:

"Me puse feliz cuando me enteré que me tocaba jugar con Federer. Y sí, me sorprendí cuando me puse 3-0, pero sabía que no iba a durar mucho. No me engaño: era obvio que no iba a ganar, lo importante era disfrutarlo"
"I was happy when I found out I was gonna play against Federer. And yes, I was surprised when I was up 3-0 but I knew that wasn't gonna last much. I knew what was gonna happen: it was obvious he was gonna win, the important thing was to enjoy it"

"Esto no me lo saca nunca más nadie. Voy a tener el vídeo, lo voy a tener, y algún día les voy a contar a mis nietos que jugué con el número uno del mundo"
"No one's ever gonna take this away from me. I'll have the tape with me and some day I'll tell my grandkids that I played against the N°1 player in the world!

I love his attitude :yeah:

Rafa would never win 7-5 7-6 6-2 against Hartfield on clay and this makes the difference between the #1 and #2 player on this surface.

If Robredo is playing his best like he is these days Federer can go home early.

This reminds me of the time Federer played Suzuki in the 1st round. Suzuki played brilliantly, very entertaining, and I figured I wanted to see more games of this guy. Of course he disappeared into obscurity. I am afraid the same will happen to Hartfield.

Fortunately, the title isn't decided by how Nadal or Federer play Hartfield, it's decided by how Nadal and Federer play each other.

lol at that crazy shot Hartfield made when Fed lobbed him towards the end....guess he's a clown too, much like some of his compatriots :o ;)
but its good to see guys giving Fed a fight like this i mean at some point someone will eventually take a set off him and I think Diego deserved to, but not enough experience i guess.

Good match of Hartfield! :hatoff: When I saw him playing he was again once more one of these players that make you wondering "why the hell is this guy not doing more demage?!". Sure, I know that Federer starts usually slowly into the tournaments, but still it was well played by Hartfield :yeah:

Diego Hartfield seemed to be cool and I learnt that he has an Austrian double citizenship. I don't think that's going to happen, but: if he is not going to make the breakthrough in the Argentine Davis Cup team due to the big depth in Argentina, I would welcome him playing for Austria too  ;)
