I was there (and he signed my book)... and everyone was cheering sooo hard, JC seemed to be really proud of himself. I saw JC practice on Monday and he got mobbed. There was like a stampede so Juan carlos had to run away with the security guards.

Oh and i talk to Jordi Arresse (captain of spanish davis cup team), he was quite funny cos his english was not very good. Me and my friend sat right infront of them at Lopez's match and i was quite surprised that not many ppl recognised them as there were so many spanish supporters.

Lynne

Good news!! I hope Juanqui's OK!! :)

Third seed Juan Carlos Ferrero shrugged off a left arm injury to grind out a 6-4, 7-6(3), 7-5 victory over Filippo Volandri. Putting his left hand out to cushion a fall, Ferrero said that he felt pain in his inner elbow.

“I felt a lot of pain when I fell down. But it's okay and I'm glad it's not the wrist. I went to the doctor and he said I needed to take some anti-inflammatories and tomorrow we'll see how it is working. She thinks everything is going to be okay. I feel okay... and for the next match it's going to be all right.” :wavey:

JC's playing Pavel next, it's an easier match compared to all the other seed's opponents...

Vamos JC!

Lynne
01-25-2004, 11:30 AM
Yeah, it should be considered easier compared to the others. Juanqui's head to head records against Pavel: Pavel leads 1-0. But that was way back in 2000 and I believe Juanqui has developed into a more experienced and better player. Pavel beat him in straight sets at Hamburg that year on clay.
GOOD LUCK JC!!!! :bounce:

Lynne
01-25-2004, 11:34 AM
I also did a search between Pavel and Philippoussis and Philippoussis beat Pavel in straight sets last year on hardcourt!!

i think you should think again b4 saying it's a formality 2 beat Pavel. He's a very dangerous player and the reason why he didn't play well in 2003 was his injury. but he's back on track and is hungry for victories. But if Juanqui plays well, he definitely has the 1st chance.

I went to Ferrero's practice session today and here's a cute exchange between Ferrero and this pretty girl.... well he thought so anyway cos he payed some attention to her.

Girl: Can you go out with me Juan?
Juan: How old are you? (There were few whispers and things among ppl behind me saying he was chatting her up).
Girl: (15 or 16 i think she said)
Juan: [sad look on his face] i think u're abit too young for ME....

I think he was really flattered that the girl was whistling and cheering at him... and it was so cute although u could tell he was just playing around with her but she thought he was serious and was cursing herself for not saying she was 22... lol

i thought it was quite funny cos she was just head over heels in love with him... juan carlos was really nice today, he gave me and a couple of other ppl photos although there were security guards surrounding him.

Yay! He's into the QRTS and playing Arazi, good luck JC!

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO

Q. How is your leg?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: You know, is so-so right now, you know. I feel some, you know, stress at the beginning of the match, you know, when I was 4-3 with a break.

But then with the tape and I take also ibuprofen, it's like aspirin to feel less the pain, and I was going well, and I could finish the match good.

Q. What is the injury?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: In the abductor, you know. It's like, I don't know.

Q. Not hamstring?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Yeah, it's a little bit broke, but...

Q. What part of the hamstring?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Hamstring, yeah.

Q. No, it's the groin.

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Groin, yeah.

Q. Is it something you think will prevent you from practicing tomorrow?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I will see. I will see how is going tomorrow, you know. Today we will do some ultrasound or we will put ice. We'll see tomorrow if I'm good, you know. I will practice just calm, you know, hit some balls, and after tomorrow to be ready to play.

Q. Were you in pain when you were playing the last two sets?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Yeah, of course. I feel a little bit of pain because, you know, I put the tape, but anyways I feel a little bit the pain.

But I could play my game.

Q. Do you feel you're going through the tournament and you're not getting much attention like a lot of the other players, you're quietly going through?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: No, I don't think this, you know. I just go to play my matches, and that's it, you know.

Q. So you don't care that people aren't focusing on you?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I see the people is focus also in me, you know. I'm 3 in the world, so of course the people is thinking of me.

Q. Are you surprised you've been playing on the outer courts as opposed to the stadium?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: No, because today was two Australian guys playing, so it's more normal to play in the Vodafone, of course.

Q. Is your confidence coming back now? You had seven defeats coming into this tournament. How well do you think you're playing now? Are you close to your best?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I'm playing very good, you know. I start to play today with a lot of confidence, hitting the ball pretty good. I feel very comfortable in the court, hitting the ball very good from my forehand, backhand and serve, you know.

After the injury also, I hit the ball very well all the time. Of course, I'm with a lot of confidence because I won a difficult matches, you know, also with injuries. So I'm with a lot of power.

Q. Did you come into this tournament having lost a little bit of confidence after all those defeats?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Not really. You know, not really. Because I finish the year playing the good matches. I lose these matches, but I played against the best in the world, you know. I played Davis Cup, you know. I went to Sydney, I lose first round. But I was practicing very good, and I was with a lot of confidence that I can play very good here.

I'm doing well.

Q. What sort of a player is Pavel to play against? Is he difficult for you to play against?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: You know, against anybody. But of course it's more difficult to play also, I don't know, Federer, Hewitt, you know, these kind of guys, Agassi, Safin, Nalbandian, the top player. They are top players because they are pretty good.

Q. How far away do you think you are from your best tennis?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Is not easy to say. Not easy to say because I'm playing very good, not right now, but I don't know if tomorrow, after tomorrow I'm going to play much better. But it's very difficult because I'm playing good. I'm like a hundred percent.

Q. Will you change your schedule at all this year? Last year you did so well.

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Not yet, you know, no. I will play the same tournaments as the last year, but maybe I will do a break in the summer.

Q. Have you decided yet if you will play the Olympics?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Yes, I will.

Q. Maybe it's difficult, but comparing the Olympics and winning a gold medal, is it possible to compare winning a US Open?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: No, always is the same question. It's no compare. Olympic Games is one thing. Is not a normal tournament. And the other tournaments, it's completely different. So it's very difficult to compare.

I can't tell you which one is more important, to win a Grand Slam or to win Olympic Games, you know. Maybe you have all the years to have a chance to win a Grand Slam. It's four years you have the chance to win Olympic Games.

So maybe this year it's more important to win the Olympic Games than the Grand Slam.

Q. How do you think the interest for the Olympics is around the players?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I don't know. You know, they have to put in some number. It's like driving lessons. You know, when you do five mistakes, you know, you're not confirmed. So they have to do it. They don't have election. Because if not, the draw will be a lot of players. It's impossible.

Q. Did you find some of the things Andrei was doing out there annoying, when he jumped into the icebox? Was that more of a chuckle for you or did it have any effect?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: No. Was funny. Is not important.

Q. What part of your game really pleased you most today?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I think I was serving very good. Is one of the key of the match that I win it, because I needed a lot of free points. But to serve, when you do the point serve.

And today I need it because I couldn't move a hundred percent. So I think I was serving so good. And also was very important the second ball. When he return the second ball, I try to win each point because I didn't want to do a rallies.

Q. If the Moroccan wins, what is your record like against him?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I don't know. We play a lot of times. So, I don't know.

Q. 2-1.

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: 2-1? For who?

Q. You.

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: For me.

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO

Q. If the Moroccan wins, what is your record like against him?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I don't know. We play a lot of times. So, I don't know.

Q. 2-1.

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: 2-1? For who?

Q. You.

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: For me.

cute boy! he doesn't know! :D i bet there are some things us fans and reporters know better about him than Juanqui himself!

LOL he doesnt know what he's saying...he just says yeah and agrees...how cute

The confusion is because he was also talking to another one in spanish, perhaps a translator. Watch the video.

To me anyway, he is not too keen on answering questions on press conference, so he didn't pay too much attention to what they were asking. I have some friends who met him and talked to him and his English is better than it shown.

Good luck, Juan Carlos. The tricky Moroccan will be a tough test.

And no more injury!

He was only joking. I don't actually recall him looking too sad (i'm sure he 'chuckled') - HE WAS JUST PLAYING. But yeah, he was flattered. :)

No no no. I don't mean that you're critisizing him. Just that when I first read the transcript, I thought maybe he didn't know the difference between groin/hamstring/adductor in English? I don't know the difference between those body parts either, it's not a crime. Then I watched the video and noticed that he was talking to the other guy in spanish when someone ask him in English, hence the confusion.

He's interviewed by Johnny Mac? Too bad we don't get to see it here.

They always interview the winner if they play on Rod Laver Arena and i think they interview most winners if they play on Vodafone too. It was a funny interview, but i guess they only show it on Australian tv. Johnny mac was asking so many questions and apparently he got the wind up to stop, but he kept going to someone screamed out 'Get off the court Johnny Mac!" or something like that...was funny

VAMOS JUAN CARLOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I sort of think like that too, before. Losing 2 consecutive slam final is not so good. Then, after everyone said he has no chance against Federer, I now wish he can win to the final. He has a better chance to beat Fed than Safin. He said Safin is his toughest opponent.

esther
01-30-2004, 04:10 AM
i dont know..i know getting when u get this far in a tournament...especially a tourney as big as this u want to get as far as you can and would rather get to the final than just stop at the semis...but can u just imagine if he DOES lose in the final, again?!!! i guess i'm been very selfish but it'd be too much

he thinks safin will be tougher than federer? hmm i think i have underestimated Marat ...i would NEVER have picked him to knock out both andy AND andre, but yeah i'm already content i guess you can say coz i said i'd be happy if mark, hewitt, andy or andre didnt win so there u go :)

Not like that. Last year in the atp website, they have a new column don't remember what it's called, a data sheet about a player. They asked who is his toughest opponent and he said Marat.

Marat has a big serve and can blow him off court. And we know how he doesn't like playing big servers.

Awww... he lost...................

It was definitely one of the depressing matches, things just got worse for Juan as the match went on. U could see that he was sooooooo dejected and probably also hurting a bit from the injuries. He played a horrible match and i think most of it was in the mind... but on the up side, he's taken over roddick and is now no.2......

Hope his injuries will get better and that he'll be ok for the davis cup.......

Crazy_Fool
01-30-2004, 09:53 AM
Its been a depressing couple of days for me what with Andre going out in a close match and now this one-sided match. It was obvious from about the first point that JC was not playing at his total best. I felt sorry for him cos i knew it wasnt happening. Hope he gets better soon.

If Clijsters beats Henin tonight i think i'll scream.

 Juanqui lost.... He played the first set quite well but Roger's break came at a sudden and things didn't turn out right for Juanqui after that. But he wasn't 100% fit coz he had both his thighs strapped. I'm really sad right now but I'll get over it.. I hope Juanqui will be fit throughout the year and play well in tournaments to come!!

I would also rather that he lost in the semis than in the final...that would be even more depressing...neway, like u said, the clay season starts soon! :D

I said that if JC loses to Fed then I would cheer for Safin...so, c'mon Marat blow the Fed off court!

I want Justine to beat Kim...again! :P

Ohhhhh he lost but still it was a good start to the season to make the semi's. What annoyed me were the stupid australian commentaters who kept on acting like he was just some stupid clay-courter who just happened to be no.2 in the world.

Same when Wimbeldon comes around. Funny thing is they mention the likes of Philipoosis(sp?) as a potential winner but when it comes to Ferrero, its nothing. Show some respect dammit!
