(WC) Guccione d. (1) Ferrero 6-3, 7-6

01-13-2004, 06:05 AM
Apparently this Australian Chris Guccione served brilliantly. Despite some chances, Ferrero was never able to break his opponent's serve. And, of course, Ferrero sucks in tiebreaks, so... Need I mention this is his 7th straight loss on the ATP level since winning Madrid? Maybe he can be confident going into the Aussie Open due to his exhibition win?! ;) No, probably not. But Juan Carlos entered US Open playing shitty tennis and that didn't stop him from making the finals.

01-13-2004, 06:13 AM
Just shows again how much depths there are in men's tennis now which is why I can never vote for those polls of who's the best, who'll be no.1 etc...it's so unpredictable but that's also what makes it so fun and interesting to watch.

And I hope this doesn't hurt too much on Ferrero's confidence going into AO. He did win the exhibition over Roger after all.

JC is always a slow starter. Surprising but again doesn't mean anything when it comes to the 1st slam.

I'm not too worried.

I'll be worried when he loses his 8th in a row, to Richard Gasquet in Australia ;)

01-13-2004, 06:18 AM
yeah its sad that he lost...lets hope he can do better in ausopen....;(

Nah, there's much worse. Like Rafael Nadal, for example. ;)

I'll have you know that Rafael Nadal is the fucking man! And is currently on his way to sending Schalken to Melbourne ;)

No, Ferrero could lose to someone like Burgie aka Lars Burgsmuller.

01-13-2004, 06:32 AM
This is a big upset. To me, it seems that Guccione is doing very well the last few weeks. Hopefully, Ferrero will do well in Melbourne. I think he can and should defeat Gasquet. Quite some big upsets these last few weeks. I agree with Isy; there is a lot of depth in men's tennis.

01-13-2004, 06:37 AM
well whoever does well in addidas usually do not do well in ausopen...all the past winners except sampras maybe (if im not wrong he won only 2 ausopen title in 94 where he won addidas also n in 97) have never done well in ausopen...we can take comfort in this....n also tts the reason probably why agassi went on to win so many ausopen titles...cos he never won adidas open......;)

01-13-2004, 06:39 AM
I don't think it means anything except JC had an off day, but wow what a good result for Guccione. Should boost his confidence no end!

01-13-2004, 06:42 AM
I watched the game before they decided to flip to that shitty game show "wheel of fortune" midway through the second set. Ferrero struggled to win a point on Guccione's serve. In fact, he struggled to get a racquet on Guccione's serve. This kid could be a real prospect for Wimbeldon. Serves and volleys very well.

01-13-2004, 06:46 AM
Guccione was finalist in both junior's singles and doubles in Wimbly 2003.

01-13-2004, 06:52 AM
i don't know if u guys notice but somehow ferrero always don't do well when he meets the opponent for the 1st time on his least favourite grounds n this opponent is usually some big server or serve n volleyer....but after the 2nd meeting...he will do better against them...what do u guys think???

01-13-2004, 06:54 AM
Just pure bad luck that JC got drawn against such a brilliant server... he didn't really play horrible or anything, just never been able to return Guiccione's serve.

01-13-2004, 06:57 AM
Wow...what a result...it's good for the young guy...though I'm also disappointed for Juanqui...btw I can't seem to get livescores anyway and our tv telecast has finished...does anyone know the scores of Costa v Robredo???

01-13-2004, 07:03 AM
Guccione played well :) VERY well JC played well also but chris was way better

01-13-2004, 07:17 AM
btw u can disregard my question about costa/robredo cos I've just seen the result

01-13-2004, 07:21 AM
OMG i can't still believe it :bigcry:

01-13-2004, 07:42 AM
OMG I went down to watch this match 2day and was completly shocked. Juanqui didn't play anywhere near his best if you ask me (and he was wearing the evil shirt so i think that had something to do with it) and it was actually a really weird match because the most of the games were pretty short and going with the server. Juan Carlos just struggled against Chris' serve, like i think he won about 5 points on his first serve and it didnt help that he was standing like 6 yrs behind the base of
the line (to use a juanquisim). Chris served really well but i didnt really get to see the rest of his game because he just kept hitting aces so i cant comment on that.

He looked pretty disgusted with himself and left the court almost immedietly after the match was over but i'm trying not to look to deeply into it because he always seems to struggle against players he hanst played before, i think his coach and stuff need to do better scouting.

This is why Roddick will always be a huge favourite against Ferrero on a fast surface.

Ferrero looked totally lost returning serve and Roddick, who serves similarly to Chris, will rip Ferrero up if they meet in AO.

Thats rubbish. That is like saying JCF didn't play well against Roddick at USO final. In both those matches the only thing I saw JCF doing wrong is struggling terribly returning serve. Can't believe during the whole 2 sets he didn't once think returning from 5 meters behind the baseline wasn't very effective.

01-13-2004, 08:49 AM
im so sad i cannot believe this he lost against a wc it's too bad but im confident about the aussie open and you guys what do u think about this ?

01-13-2004, 08:57 AM
maybe jc have enough time to rest~~~~

01-13-2004, 09:40 AM
Ferrero 7 defeats in a row  :o
omg....... this is getting pathetic

Hong Kong doesnt count.

01-13-2004, 10:53 AM

off day.. off month... two off months.. it's the same ;) Naah I just hope JC will do well in te Aussie Open.. all I'm wishing for right now :)

01-13-2004, 11:33 AM
I think this is just a blip. It sounds like Ferrero met a really hot player who basically served him off the court. That's happened to Guga too even before his surgery.

The best ATP players run the risk of losing early in every tournament. It's not the WTA. I would rather have had JCF win, but he is still a wonderful player and he will show his class in some other tournament.

Even though I am sorry JCF lost, I'm very happy for Guccione. It's a great win for the kid, and the Aussies need some new talent in the pipline. :)

don't hate him ,Dr. Scotso

01-13-2004, 11:42 AM
I saw the first set and a half, Ferrero didnt play badly, but he just couldnt get a point on Gucciones serve! The guy was serving huge, he was winning 100% of the points on 1st serve for the whole time i watched! Ferrero only played one bad game to lose his serve in first set, he did a double fault and a few errors to give it away, but other than that was winning the rest of his serves comfortably. Ferrero's 1st serve % was about 80% which was excellent, and winning 75% of them. He just ran into someone who was playing the best tennis of his life.

The low ranked Aussies always play out of their minds during the Australian summer circuit, for example Stosur, Reid and Guccione this year, and Crabb and Sirianni last year. Its because of this training camp they all attend in December, I'll tell you this must be one hell of a camp because they always come out firing in January!

:worship:

Yeah..... Ferrero is " A great returner "

01-13-2004, 04:05 PM
It's quite possible Ferrero didn't do enough "research" on his opponent's game, coming in confident that he could handle whatever was thrown at him. And when the guy imposed his game so well, Ferrero was unable to make adustments.

anyway, great win for guccione!

01-13-2004, 04:09 PM
Should be interesting to see how Ferreira handles the Guccione serve in the next round, he is a better returner and has much more experience in Australia - notably, his two comebacks from two sets to love down at the AO have been against big servers, Ljubicic and Fish. Will the nightmare of playing another young Aussie in Adelaide come back to haunt him this week?

01-13-2004, 04:19 PM
Juanqui!? Ut-oh :tape:

01-13-2004, 04:40 PM
Guccione, does he serve and volley or he plays from the baseline like Roddick?

Chloe le Bopper
01-13-2004, 04:43 PM
Ferrero's success against big servers is quite varied. It would be incorrect to say that he struggles with big servers as a rule, since that isn't always the case (he's beaten or has a fair record against both Arthurs and Mark, for example).

Anyways... hopefully this spurs him on to not be a plonker in the Open ;)

01-13-2004, 04:50 PM
Ferrero has only beaten Philippoussis on clay.
I think everybody has a good record against Arthurs.

Hmm....surprising, but the most interesting will be at AO.

01-13-2004, 05:21 PM
 dissapointing...7th straighy loss for JC- man that has got to be doing a number on his confidence !*sigh* VAmos Juan Carlos!

01-13-2004, 05:29 PM

Thats all I can say, solid win for he Aussie!

Fair enough ;)

Does anybody know what happened to Tennischick? Did the idiocy of the board run her away, or is she just busy these days?

I'd hate to think that Ferrero is on a seven match losing streak and she isn't around to enjoy it ;)

01-13-2004, 11:45 PM
:inlove: Aussies

01-13-2004, 11:49 PM
I believe Guccione Serves & Volleys. But like someone else said you dont get to see much of his other game becuase he's always hitting aces!

01-13-2004, 11:54 PM
Guccione must be feeling so proud of himself regardless...

01-14-2004, 02:16 AM
congrats Gucciono

It isn't good for Ferrero's confidence but the loss shouldn't be too disappointing.
