Really?

I always wondered why always the draws weren't done by a machine, but at the same time, when I saw a live draw in New Haven, it was fun because they let the fans pick the names (I got to do one and I was so excited that I couldn't remember afterwards who it was I picked. ). But I don't think they do that at most tournaments so why not always let a machine do it.

Fernando González: "Voy a París con mucha confianza"
Fuente :DPA

"¡Cómo no me voy a acordar! Había ido muy bien a París. Con muchas ilusiones. Y me toca con él, que venía de la "qualy" (la ronda de clasificación al cuadro principal). Empezó a ganarme, yo no entendía nada.

"No, nada preocupante.

No puedes elegir. Por eso no me gusta especular de antemano. Pero además esta vez la situación va a ser mejor, porque estoy más arriba en el ranking, es decir estaré mejor ubicado en el cuadro de los preclasificados. Eso ayuda. Y después veremos. Pero voy con mucha tranquilidad, con mucha confianza".

For some reason I was so worried it would be Nico who would draw Marat but its Fena!!! It doesn't make a (bleeping) difference whether a player is seeded or not does it? Well, Safin hasn't been playing that well and Fernando has, I'll have to hope that continues for RG.

While I realize that for the average fan this is an exciting first round matchup, I would rather Fernando have an easy qualifier in the first round.

From Jon Wertheim's RG men's seed report:

"Gonzalez vs. Safin: When was the last time two recent top 10ers faced off this early? Potentially, anyway, this is as electric a first-rounder as you could ever hope for."

Hola,

I'm back from Roland-Garros. It was a great day today

First, I saw Fernando. I didn't expect to see him today, but at the moment, it's my lucky year with him. He played a match for the Benny Berthet Day on the Philippe Chatrier court, he played vs Djokovic the last match of the day. He lost it 4/6 :( Then, after he's practriced for one hour with Larry Stefanski. He did a lot of volleys. They finished at 8.30 pm. He seems to be really motivated. Would have thought that he would have taken one day off. And, he's always smiling, it's great to support a player like him :)

At the end of the match, he said that he was very happy to be in Paris, that he loves the tournament, that his first round was tough, but in a grand slam no match is easy.

Tomorrow, he will practrice, so I hope to see him again. Will post my pictures later, I'm too tired tonight.

Players I saw today on court : Federer (he played vs Blake), Nadal (training), Gonzalez (match & training), Safin (he was giving an interview, and signing autographes at the Adidas stand), Mauresmo (I didn't attend to her training, she trained after Carlos), Wilander (my big idol, was playing a double with the former French players), Haas (he played vs Björkman), Blake, Björkman
See you soon :bigwave:

Thanks for the report, Val! :D

So great to know that he is so motivated and also is always great to know that he is always smiling, like you said, it is great to support a player like him ;)

Val - How was Fernando's shoulder looking? I saw him exercising it a little bit during his match against Ljubo.

I'v been reading a lot of reports about the RG draw and when they mention Fernando it always says this:

Chile's Fernando Gonzalez is the most unfortunate seeded player because the ninth seed will take on Russian Marat Safin, a former world number one, in the first round.

So true! Poor Fernando ... first time he plays RG with such a good ranking and he gets a terrible first round match :awww:

But anyways ... we know Fernando can do it!

GOOD LUCK FERNANDO!!!!!!!!

I'm already nervous for tomorrow's match :sobbing:

This is from the Roland Garros official website.

"Former pro Peter Lundgren took Marat Safin under his wing in May 2004. Coach Lundgren - who previously mentored Roger Federer - is confident that his Russian charge will be able to overcome ninth seed Fernando Gonzalez in the first round and go on to greater things.

How well is Marat playing at the moment?

He's on decent form, but the draw really wasn't kind to him. Now that he's down to around No50 in the world, he's not going to be seeded, so we knew that he might come up against a big name early in the tournament. Fernando Gonzalez won't be easy to beat, but I think that if Marat manages to get through, he can go far, since he's playing well at the moment. For the past three or four days, he has looked very focussed during his practices and less impatient than usual, which is a positive sign.

Has he fully recovered from his injury now?

He's fine. He's been training hard recently, and his knee has held up, which is great to see. He can give it 100 per cent on court now. A few weeks ago, his knee was bothering him again, but it's fine now, and as long as his knee's OK, then he should be able to do well.

What will be the key to his match against Gonzalez?

He needs to start off well and make sure he doesn't fall behind straight away. He needs to stay positive and put Gonzalez under pressure throughout. Marat doesn't like to sit back… he prefers to dictate matters on court, so it'll be up to him to boss things once he's out there.

Marat seems to like Roland Garros…

It's true. He seems to like Paris in general, since he's always done well at Bercy as well. Let's hope this works in his favour over the next two weeks…"

I hope we get to see some of this match tomorrow... pray for good weather also since they have to play last... ;)

I hope Fena can play well since Maratski hasn't played v much this year! If Fena can carry over his good form fr the last few wks, that s help. Don't know their hth but yes, Marat has made SF before altho his only "run" on clay this yr was SF in Valencia. It will be windy again tomorrow, unfortunately, which has hampered everyone's play so far... I'm sure Fena and Larry are aware of how dangerous Maratski can be, i.e., by being inconsistent and w that element of surprise. You never know when he will show up [he himself doesn't know].

VAMOS, FENA!!!

Yeah, the absolutely WORST r1 matchup... :ras:

RogiFan88
05-29-2006, 09:53 PM
Juanqui says that Fena doesn't give you any rhythm [how I hate to type that word... I'll spell it in Spanish, much easier... ritmo] so if that's the case, then Fena s just play like that -- no doubt that w bug Maratski...

Marat's "knee has held up", but we all know that Marat's knee isn't a normal healthy knee. And we all know how Marat's moods come and go. If Fernando can get Marat down early--get Marat upset I think that will work to Fernando's benefit :) Good Luck and Vamos Fernando

I couldn't watch the match as you all know :sobbing: but could buy batteries for my radio and so in Cooperativa they were saying the scores like every 15 minutes ... it wasn't a great way to follow it because I was really nervous but he won and that's what matters!!!! :bigclap:

So great to "hear" he was playing so great, so calm and smart. :yeah:

Congrats Fernando!!!!!!!!! :bigclap:

VAMOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MariaV - Sorry for Marat  not exactly a player I like to see losing in the first round of such an important tournament and too bad they had to play against each other. :awww: Marat only needs more match play and get some confidence back and I'm sure he'll come back to be among the best ones :yeah:

But now I'm watching it.

YEAY FOR FERNANDO!

He looks good - playing great. And very calm too especially after having problems in the 2nd.

I'M SO PROUD OF HIM!

I know you all like this Stefanki guy but I found it really sad seeing him in the stands. I want Horacio back. It is after all Horacio that gave Fernando the skills over the past few years that got him to #8.

I saw most of the match, great game from Fernando, one of his best this year. I see him making it all the way to a quarters match vs Nadal. If he plays like he did against Safin, he has a good chance of defeating Rafa.

Hola,
Finally, I got a ticket for the match. I was early in the morning in front of the stadium, I was for the 1st one  But my day cost me a lot of money as I had already a ticket for the Annexes :( Well, we only have one life !! Tomorrow, I may have the same problem.

I saw him at his training at 12.00, he practriced with the spanish, Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo, on the same court, there were the Swedes Björkman and Thomas Johansson, so I was very lucky.

So, I was there at the match, all the new team was there. I have to say that I knew that Fernando could win, but all depended on Marat. In RG, at the moment, it's very cold, the weather is strange, I thought we were in Hamburg as it's very cold there each year. And, I was there since the morning so I was a bit tired and didn't wish a long match and didn't want to see the end on tv today. I think I was more anxious than Gonzo himself

Fernando played really well, he made some great points. It was a pleasant match. Would have thought a closer match, but Marat gave some points by making big mistakes. I was so happy for him at the end of the match, and he was very happy. Most of the crowd was for Marat :( Well, he's a star here in Paris. It was funny to have a look on the Fernando's team (from where I was I had a direct look on them). Carlos Burgos was cheering him and Larry was quiet, he seems to be a quiet man and maybe, Fernando needs that kind of temper to calm him sometimes, as he has a strong temper. Massu watched the beginning of the match with his coach, I think there was also Capdeville.

Now, he'll face Djokovic. I hope he won't play on a big court, Court 2 would be perfect and it can be shown on tv, and the atmosphere could be great there.

Today, I'm at home, so I will have the time to have a look on my pics and to post some of them.

So, Gonzo made me happy yesterday, and I don't regret to have queued early in the morning to see him !!! The match ended at 8 pm. So a tough day for me and went to sleep directly

Vamos for the next round Fernando :bounce: :bounce:

Steady Gonzalez sends Safin packing
By Araz Gulekjian
Tuesday, May 30, 2006
Racquet slamming Marat Safin's spring comeback on clay ended in a first round knockout in Paris at the hands of Chilean power-hitter Fernando Gonzales.

For almost two and a half hours, the 25-year-old Chilean, seeded ninth here, applied steady, unrelenting pressure onto his opponent, muscling past the unseeded Russian 6-3 1-6 6-3 6-1 on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Gonzalez hammered 39 winners to Safin's 41, fired seven aces and made 21 unforced errors to his opponent's 50.

In this first round marquee matchup, Safin and Gonzalez traded blows early. The Russian's game quickly unravelled under the might of his opponent's forehand assaults. Gonzalez broke the Russian twice to go up 5-3 and sealed the opening set with a clean down-the-line forehand winner.

Safin, who fell to No53 in the ranking after reaching the top spot in November 2000, was playing in his first Grand Slam of the season. He missed the Australian Open in January and the US Open last September after treatment to repair a slight tear in his left knee ligament. He returned to the tour in late February.

Clearly, Safin looked rusty. But the two-time Grand Slam winner (US Open 2000 and Australia 2005) stormed right back, breaking his opponent twice (in the second and fourth games). He galloped ahead 5-0 and evened the match at a set apiece two games later when Gonzalez clunked a backhand wide.

Once again the tide turned. Safin, whose best showing in Paris was a semifinal finish in 2002, dropped his serve in the fourth game to trail 1-4. The Russian - often thought to consider mentors as expendable as the rackets he is frequently known to smash - lost his temper and slammed his racket to the ground at the end of the third set.

Gonzalez, a singles bronze medallist and doubles gold medallist in Athens, continued unleashing a lethal cocktail of inside-out forehands and powerful serves. He broke a dejected Safin four more times to coast to an easy triumph.

In round-two, Gonzalez will square off with Novak Djokovic of Serbia.

Safin declined comment and was a no-show at the post press conference, the Russian preferring instead to pay a fine.

06-01-2006, 02:46 PM
I hate these rain delays -- it always favours the guy who is down at that time... Fena better be able to continue and win this match! He's about the only guy I'm truly cheering for on this side! ;)

Since I can't see a TV...is anyone watching where they can tell if they might start again sometime today?

GonzoFan
06-01-2006, 04:06 PM
They just said that it will stop raining in about 5-10 minutes but they don't know if they'll start playing again because the rain will start again in 45 minutes so there are some players that don't want to go on court to play for like half an hour and then stop again.

PoderShileno
06-01-2006, 04:08 PM

GonzoFan
06-01-2006, 04:08 PM
